Sandbanks Hotel
Ranked #10 of 13 Hotels in Poole

the hotel is certainly showing signs of age and the lack of any recent refurbishment, the Wi-Fi is very poor, excessive charges for pamper packs etc, lift to the rear was out of order throughout our 5 day stay, if the same effort that was given to the wedding partys was shown to hotel guests then the Sandbanks would be a better experience.
the decor in the rooms are 1970s standard, no water pressure, tatty furniture , dirty carpets etc
,

Room Tip: sea facing rooms are the best

My wife and I spent a week here in the beginning of September. We had never stayed at the hotel before, although we had a couple of drinks at the terrace bar last summer. So we were quite exited about the stay. Check-in was easy and efficient. 3 storey building but lift only to second which is a pain if you have lots of luggage. Our room on the 3rd floor was fantastic, large with seaview and a balcony. Bed was really comfy with soft mattress and pillows.
Breakfast was nice, but besides the cooked food there werent much to choose from. We also had a meal at the fabulous terrace overlooking the beach, but that experience was unfortunately ruined by the wasps constantly flying around the tables. I felt sorry for the bar staff who constantly had to duck and dive to avoid the wasps. As we arrived on the day that the summer season were ending(Hotel staff told us that, we had no idea), the hotel seemed a bit deserted. Not much going on, with the bar area empty most of the time. Boring. Swimming pool was closed due to unforeseen problems. Shame.
In our view, the hotel was nice, in a fantastic location. But it felt very impersonal, with staff who were efficient but not overtly friendly. A smile every now and then would do wonders! This in stark contrast to our stay at The Cumberland in Bournemouth the week before, where the whole staff really made you feel welcome and looked after. If we ever decide to go back it would have to be in the summer season, when there is more people and a cosier atmosphere than it was during our stay.

With a 2 year old to entertain, what made Sandbanks (just) worth the expense on a sunny holiday was the proximity of the sandy beach, the nice large and comfortable family room with a sea view and the ability to use the indoor and outdoor pools at the nearby Haven Hotel. The Sandbanks indoor pool (which is in the basement and is not little-child friendly or relaxing) was closed during our stay and we spent all day in the more attractive indoor pool at the Haven and relaxing in the sun at the outdoor pool there, watching the amazing view of all the boats going by. Only had dinner at Sandbanks on the first night. The dining room is very large and busy, lacking charm, rather like a very smart canteen. The food was very average for the price. There are many restaurants nearby at Poole Quay. The hotel lacks personality.

Room Tip: The sea views are worth the extra cost. The ""harbour view is also the car park view!

I booked a normal room but phoned up to ask if we could upgrade as it was my wife's birthday.I was told that we couldn't upgrade as all the rooms were taken but upon arriving at the hotel found that we had been given a double room with a sea view. I wouldn't hesitate to go there again as we had a wonderful time.

Had a lovely day at Sandbanks, one of the best things was the Children's Buffet that was put on for today, it was really great. I'm now going to have my kids asking me why can't I do meals like that. Had fantastic weather over the weekend and am sorry to be going home. Must come back again at Half Term and for Christmas.

Room Tip: Get a room with a beach view, they're stunning

I have been dreading writing this review, I want to love it, but I can't!

OK, to be clear - what you are paying for at this hotel is locaton, location, location!

During a perfect sunny day, it is bliss and I guess you would feel special as a resident stepping out onto the beach from the hotel terrace, IF it wasn't open to just anyone tripping up the beach or wanting to park in the carpark or drink in the bar, So, no, you are not paying for exclusivity. Maybe it's the service then? No, most of the staff are horrendously under trained.

Could it be the accommodation? Well, maybe - we did have the ideal family suite - a huge room with a comfy superking bed for us and another twin room for our son with a 'jack & jill' bathroom between us. Sadly our otherwise perfect shared balcony was disgusting - covered in bird poo, fag butts and the table coated in a tomato sauce/food detrious. We did asked for it to be cleaned but they just picked up 4 fag butts and left us with the rest of the yukkyness.

DO NOT try to eat in Sandbanks after 9pm - not even on room service! There is nothing (even locally) else unless you want to get a takeaway delivery from Poole. Having talked about my extreme dissapointment with the Duty Manager, their kitchen was able to cater to us and the resulting food was good. It should not have got that far.

I almost forgot the breakfast - I think it has improved since other reviews I have seen BUT I couldn't keep my mouth shut and had to make them cook their sausages properly and am pretty sure the tea/coffee machine wouldn't pass an EH check for guest use.

The truth is that the only thing holding up their 4 star is the dingy underground pool and it could be the worst place in the world to stay (which it isn't) and it would still do well.

Sandbanks isn't even the best beach now - would totally recommend Branksome Chine / Alum Chine now and let's face it, even the uber riche have sold up their places on Sandbanks for apartments now, so sandy as it is - getting less chic by the season, sadly.

Room Tip: Harbour views are bigger, and slightly less cost. Do not hesitate to complain - this hotel kind of r...
