“No room for dinner!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

Nice hotel, rooms good but small. Biggest disappointment is that they don't keep dinner tables for people staying in the hotel. We could only get a table before 6 or after 9pm. We weren't asked if we wanted to book dinner when we booked the room. Pity.

Had a nice meal overall but thought the restaurant was too dark and the service could have been better. Read a lot of good reviews but it didn't live up to my expectations. Would recommend it to couples who wanted an expensive dinning experience.

Fantastic lunch, oysters only £5.00 per dozen whilst stocks last. They have some 10000 throughout the chain. The meal at £16.95 for two courses was a bargain. Sat outside in the warm September sun enjoying our food. Food appeared fairly promptly and was very hot including the frites. The only downside was a white wine spritzer at £6.95! Service was good and the waitress very polite. We were drawn in by the oysters and after having a mediocre meal at their hotel in Bristol we were not expecting great things. It's worth a try for lunch but could be missed as it's not on the quayside.

We were looking forward to staying here, just for 1 night, but it did not really live up to our expectations. It started badly, we had booked a car parking space for on the premises (on the understanding that space was limited, and for various reasons a car park is one of the things we ensure a hotel has before we book there). We pulled in to the car park (not easy) and found that it was full, it took about 8 cars. We asked at reception and were told no matter, we could park in the public car park for the same £10 we had paid in advance. We were not happy about this but had little choice.
The room was nice enough, quite dark, but done well with Miller Harris toiletries, a good shower and a very large bed. There were 2 televisions, back to back, which both came on unless you put the remote right next to the television, at first we wondered what on earth was happening, watching one channel whilst listening to another! One of the televisions was very large, but the picture quality was very poor so it was not worth bothering with, not the end of the world, but if you are going to do something, do it properly.
We agree with a previous reviewer who mentioned that everything seemed 'extra', breakfast was extra, bread with dinner was extra, veg with the meal was extra etc. we had nothing special and our bill for dinner, bed and breakfast came to about £400, it just was not worth it. To add insult to injury, we had been charged twice for the car parking, we were told this often happens, so do check your bill.
The staff seemed pleasant enough, no complaints about them, but we would be unlikely to return.

We experienced a truly exceptional standard of service during our stay at HdV Poole. The staff went out of their way to respond to our every request. Whilst we were only there one night, we were made to feel as if our stay was important. Especially impressive was the chef's impromptu aperitif platter - as was the fact that the waiting staff actually went to the trouble of asking the right questions. Really nothing to fault, everything to praise.

We booked two nights to stay in July over a Saturday and Sunday night. After seeing the price we expected standards to meet this extravagance. It didn't. The room was small, the bathroom had a shower over the bath (when you're paying in excess for £200 a night, you expect a seperate shower), we booked a room with a terrace/balcony, not that we could sit and enjoy it as it was overlooked by the flats opposite, there was no attempt to make it private. We both expected a certain standard, and it fell far short of that, my husband described it as "holiday inn-esque". And there were add-ons everywhere. Our £260 a night didn't include a cooked breakfast, just a continental, if we wanted cooked it would be an extra £3 each. Signs on the bottle of wine in the room with the price, nothing free in the mini bar (we regularly stay in hotels of this price bracket, and they usually provide you with a few juices and at least some water in the mini bar included). You had to pay to park your car. We didn't opt for the cooked breakfast as we were less than pleased about having to pay out of principle. The continental breakfast was very nice and sitting on the terrace out the back of the hotel in the sun was nice. But we were so disappointed with our room and felt "ripped off" that we requested to cancel the second night, which the staff did oblige to. Even so, I did feel ripped off for what we got. I wouldn't bother returning at those prices. The only good thing was the bed was comfy and the location was very central.

Good room, good location, great food. The hotel is small enough that the staff quickly got to know us, were interested and interesting, and were able to give us pointers as to what to do and see locally. Really very good all round.
