“hotel did not live up to expectations”
Reviewed 16 December 2010

Whilst our room was well presented, it was only accessible by walking across a little courtyard which would not be ideal in bad weather! The meal was really below standard. Tasteless cod balls for a starter, bland pasta and badly cooked lamb that was served with potato unbeknown to us, so we ordered a side order of potato and the waitress didn't even mention this to us.When we ordered wine the waitress was really ignorant of the wines which were being offered on the menu. This is quite unforgivable considering how the hotel promotes itself as Hotel du vin! We did have a problem with a noise in our bathroom but, must say, it was dealt with well by the manager. Overall we were not impressed with this hotel and you will find many better hotels in this area.

We stayed on a November Sunday/Monday night at a reasonable room rate for HdV. We were put in an enormous room (Le Grande Dame) ; four poster bed, corner sofa area, 2 large flat screen tvs, roll top bath in room, walk-in shower in bathroom - much better room than the rate we were paying. The cot provided was a M&P cot, immaculate with bedding. Waiting in the room when we returned from our day out for our toddler was colouring pencils and CBeebies colouring pages. We had lovely room service meals and the room layout meant we were able to watch tv in bed whilst the toddler remained undisturbed asleep on the other side of the room.

All the staff were very friendly towards us and our toddler. It was our first stay at a HdV since having a baby and were worried we'd feel out of place, but this particular branch couldn't have been more welcoming.

Our two night visit was fantastic! From the warm welcome to our departure.
All the staff were friendly and attentive and nothing too much trouble and they created a very relaxed and good humoured atmosphere.
Our room was upgraded as we were staying two nights and we were given a suite with huge bed, twin baths, enormous shower and every luxury you could wish for.
Dinner was a delight with a good menu with most ingredients sourced locally and also very good value. It goes without saying that the wine list was extensive but there were some sensibly priced bottles to choose from.
Breakfast was also excellent and there was a wide ranging selection.

We stayed in the Hotel du Vin for a short midweek-break.
The staff were all very pleasant and very helpful.
The room was a good size and well decorated with a good sized bathroom, the bed large and comfortable.
The restaurant was busy, but the tables are spaced enough that there was no feeling of crowding. The menu was interesting with a good variety of food and delicious, the portions were plentiful. The restaurant staff were attentive and very pleasant.. As one would expect an excellent selection of wines, with a plentiful selection of reasonably wines.
The previous parking problem is solved - there is a huge private car park. The location, right in the middle of the old town was ideal.
Overall a very enjoyable experience.

We've stayed here several times and the high standards that we've enjoyed previously have been maintained. Well equipped rooms, very good food and excellent staff. the restaurant manager was particularly helpful.

A bit of a mixed bag....

The hotel itself is in a lovely building and we were lucky enough to stay in the main bit, which meant we had high ceilings and a lovely view of the Church yard and Georgian terrace at the front. The room was spacious, the bathroom clean and tidy ('tho not a patch on HdV Newcastle...) and the welcome very warm. We went on the dinner, bed and breakfast rate, which I thought pricey but, on reflection, was pretty good value at £195 as I suspect that the restaurant is probably the best place to eat in the town. But we got no sleep - the aircon in the room had something of a mind of its own coupled with a recurring clunk, which kept both of us up all night. Not great.

To their credit, HdV were very good about it. We were late for breakfast because we were exhausted but they sent breakfast up to the room after the 10am cut-off and when we raised the issue upon check-out, they knocked £50 off the bill, which basically covered the drinks we totted up whilst we were there, and defused most of the anger - although didn't stop the yawning!
