“Christmas at The Salterns Hotel”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

We stayed two nights at The Salterns Hotel over Christmas. Service was good, we only took Breakfast as we were visiting relatives. Room was clean and adequate. Our reason for using this Hotel is that they welcome Dogs which means we can enjoy lots of good walks on the Beach with our Border Terrier. We are regular customers.

Room Tip: We took a Twin room which was very large, much bigger than any of the competitors, also a triple on...

Booked into the hotel for there New Years Party and had a fantastic time. Food was top class and service was very good. Stayed in a standard room for the night, which was bright, spacious and clean. Breakfast the next morning was superb as well, with a large selection of continental or cooked options. Will be using this again to see in 2013

I attended a dinner at this hotel on 14 December and ordered the vegetarian option as last year when I attended the same event the food was awful and the menu this year was the same. The starter was salmon which was fine as previously. I had a spinach cannelloni which was OK, nothing exceptional, the sauce was a bit watery but tasted reasonable. On the same plate there was a huge goats cheese and olive salad which was fine but I couldn't eat it all. The meat main course was brisket and last year I simply could not eat it because it was so tough - I suspect it had not been cooked enough. To be fair this year it did seem better and everyone said it was a huge improvement on the previous year. There were plenty of vegetables available and several roast potatoes on each plate with the meat. Pudding was pecan pie and that was very good. It is a lovely venue although the hotel looks a bit tired inside and probably could do with refurbishing. Overall the staff did a good job, nothing exceptional that stood out. I can't comment on the rooms as I didn't stay over. Car parking can be a bit limited because the hotel is part of a marina complex.

This was a superb hotel in all senses. The staff were welcoming and attentive, the hotel in general very clean, warm and inviting, and the standard of food at breakfast was outstanding. We opted for a sea view room and were not disappointed. Our room was very comfortable, spotlessly clean & had two gloriously large windows giving us those superb sea views. The extra touches of water & chocolates ( as well as generous tea/coffee & biscuits) was a nice touch. Before we went we had a moment where we were worried about going as we had booked this hotel before reading the tripadvisor reviews ( below) and almost wished we hadn't booked! Well we are SO GLAD we took no notice at all. Our stay was simply fantastic & we will return without a doubt. It makes us laugh that the cost of local taxi's can be part of a review~ how can it be the hotels fault???!!! We will recommend this hotel without a doubt :)

Room Tip: room 102 was a twin..........the room was huge and had two large picture windows over the boats/ wat...

Very disappointing, as this restaurant is local to us, and it would have been handy not to have to pay the extortionate fares of the local taxis to get to other establishments.

However, same as the last reviewer, we live locally and have tried the food in the "Via Veneto" restaurant several times now and it is very poor quality.

The ingredients appear to be not fresh, perhaps pre frozen? possibly from cheap wholesale catering packs, knocked together by an inexperienced cook.

The restaurant was empty when we went and we were seated in a corner. Then a group of 4 came in and were seated right next to us? Very noisy, talking at the top of their voices as if they were audibly challenged, and they needed the world to know about their sailing exploits.

Not a good experience at all.

Waste of time and money.

We will not go again.

We live locally to this hotel & often visit for a drink due to it's great location, We have often tried the food but every time have had a problem with it.

The bar menu does sound good but the food is mostly re-heated, often cold, or has serious taste balance issues i.e, hummus made from a whole bulb of garlic, soup like water, korma with over cooked chicken that is as hot as a vindaloo, under cooked chicken dishes, cold solid rice, the list goes on
One day recently one of our children commented he couldn't eat the sausages because they were cold (breaking food hygiene law) that could have given my 3 year old food poisoning.

I am a chef of 20 years so I do have some knowledge of how to do things correctly.

If the food issues were sorted out I would bring my custom back to this hotel.
The hotel is based at one of the most prestigious marinas in the country in an affluent area but the food is better at mc'donalds.

They must know that the local reputation of this hotel is being damaged by its poor food....I know if it had great food(even if it was simple food) it would be packed the whole time, they are missing a trick..
