“overnight stay”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

Stayed for one night on 1 September. Room was basic but adequate for one night. Reception staff on arrival were great. Breakfast service was a bit disorganised with only 2 youngsters serving. They were very polite but you had to keep asking for things. The man on reception when we checked out was not very friendly and, in fact, didn't speak to us at all. We were the only ones checking out but he managed to give us somebody elses receipt which we only noticed when we got home.

we had a lovely time her, parents had a beautiful room with wonderful views of the harbour. Staff were helpful and polite. Would definately stay here again, and recommend this hotel to friends and family.

The Salterns Hotel is situated in a picturesque harbour-side location, albeit that it is difficult to find, and consequently, the use of SatNav is highly recommended.

It is a small hotel with circa 20 rooms, and I would describe it as functional, comfortable, and adequate.

The staff were perfectly friendly, the room acceptably clean if a little basic, and the bar and food both presentable, but no more than that.

In summary, everything about the hotel was acceptable, but not special.

With a 7am crossing we needed a bed for the night in Poole .After consulting these august pages we chose Salterns and were very glad we did so. The views of the harbour, Sandbanks and Brownsea Island are truly magnificent. The reception staff are great; informative and helpful, but also truly warm, friendly and human. When we found out our ferry was delayed for 24 hours Carrie (I hope this is correct) could not have been more helpful in organising an extension to our stay and suggesting thing to do for our day in the area. She is an absolute credit to the Hotel.
We dined in the bistro both nights and found the food to be tasty, good value and generous, again with attentive staff.
The only slight downside is that the hotel is needing a refurb. If I could give 4.75 stars I would because it is not appalling but you can tell it all has been well used for quite a few years. The beds in both the rooms we had were very comfortable though.
We would stay here again and recommend without hesitation.

Room Tip: room 102 for size and stunning views

This hotel is nice but could do much better with a little TLC. The rooms are spacious and well equipped but the beds are in need of urgent replacement. Both of our rooms had mattresses that had seen better days and wafer thin pillows.

The food offering is good - very tasty food with a fine selection. The service is a little on the slow side to say the least!

Overall a good hotel but one that could be a special one with a little bit more care and attention to detail.

We did not stay at this hotel so this review only applies to the Bistro.

We were out walking from Sandbanks and felt hungry. We came across signs pointing to the marina and the hotel and walked down the side road to the hotel. We had a meal and drink there which were just excellent. I had a Sunday roast Turkey meal and my wife had a main meal of scallops. Both were exceptional and the cost was only just over £30 with drinks and a coffee. The staff were really friendly.

We normally find hotel restaurants to be a bit "average" but this was such a gem. We would go again without hesitation.

The weather was appalling when we arrived so we stayed in the hotel and had lunch in the bar which was very good. We then had a few drinks and decided to book our evening meal in the restaurant for 8 o/c because of the weather. We sat down at 8 and ordered our courses by 8.10. We had finished a two course meal by 8.45 as the service was that rushed. There were only 3 other tables being served and we were the last to sit down. The waitress was very polite but after taking our plates away for the 1st course i was shocked to see her bringing the main meals straight away. She said that the kitchen staff must be bored !!! This meant that i couldn't eat my main meal as i was still digesting my starter (which was nice) Again after eating what I could of my main meal which wasn't much the waitress bought the bill and loitered with the card machine. This rush was because she wanted to start setting the tables for breakfast which we saw her do after moving into the bar to finish our wine.I bought it to the attention of Carlos the restaurant manager and he asked if I wanted some sparkling water!! The food was lovely from what i could eat and I have no complaints about that. The hotel is clean but there are a few minor things that could be looked at such as a screw in the floor instead of a doorstop in the bathroom.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room with a harbour view and would recommend this.
