My husband and I got married at the salterns on the 20th July 2013. The day was perfect in everyway the organisers did very well at ensuring everything was set out as we wanted and all food was correct and hot. It was also great that the sun was shining it added that extra wow factor. The dj was fab and played all current music. We also had a photo booth that added more fun to our evening everyone loved this. All rooms nice for guests. If you are thinking of getting married here I would truly recommend it as the setting is gorgeous, staff nice. Perfect in everyway. We even had everyone say it was the best wedding. Lovely memories that will stay with us forever thank you Nathan and Sian xxxx

My husband and I stayed here for our 40th Wedding anniversary.
The rooms were comfortable and clean in fact the whole place was well maintained and very clean. Breakfast was excellent ,and meals in the restaurant very good with a varied menu and reasonably price.
We had a very good time and was a good choice for our anniversary.

For:
- the hotel bar is in a beautiful spot
- the receptionist was nice
- our room was a good size

Against:
- view of the car park from room
- old mattress with big slope in it
- noisy door banging all night and morning
- old fashioned, tired decor
- bathroom stunk of cigarettes
- we kept getting woken up by the phone in reception. We could even hear the messages being left.
- stroppy young staff at breakfast. They took our unfinished cooked breakfasts away while we stood up to say hello to the people at the next table. Then seemed annoyed with us when we politely mentioned it.

I am recovering from major surgery and to provide a change of scenery and some relaxation, I decided to book a night for my partner and I at this dog friendly hotel(5 miles from home). It is not a cheap hotel, but we thought it was well worth the cost.
The hotel car park had a space near the entrance- gold star from me- not having far to walk being a great plus point at the moment.
The man on reception was very friendly and helpful. It was a pity about the other customers who did not seem to understand the concept queuing or of invasion of personal space, but that is not the fault of the hotel.
Our room was up a flight of fairly steep steps. There is no lift but I already knew about this. The information on the website does warn that there are no disabled accessible rooms. A big pity, but this is a fairly old building that hass been refurbished at some point and they decided not to install a lift. Fair play to the hotel - they do provide this information.
Our room was really good. Room 102- very large and clutter free. A double and a single bed so you can choose whether to have a twin or double room- and would be great for a small family. Stunning views across towards Brownsea Island over the harbour and a small marina right next to the hotel. If you love boats, seabirds and water, this is heaven.
We had a comfortable bed with good duvet and crisp white bed linen. There was plenty of good quality tea and coffee and bottled water- a nice touch.

The bathroom- good points- had a bath and a shower cubicle, and lovely fluffy towels and decent toiletries. Nice temperature for shower. The minor minus points- tap fittings are a little dated and the plug holes need to be replaced on shower, bath and sink. Also it is a big step up into the shower and the hotel should consider fitting grab bars for getting into shower and the bath. Would help some of us!
Our dog was made welcome throughout the hotel. We went outside as it was a glorious day and sat at a table on the grass in the shade of a parasol - very very good. If you want something to eat from the extensive bar food menu you go in and order and it is brought out to you. Even though it was very busy, it was not long in arriving and we had an Italian platter to share. Very good, and reasonably priced.
The hotel can't help who comes to eat at their establishment but I thought that some of the customers showed few good manners and were inconsiderate towards other people- being noisy and disruptive ( in my opinion). I don't really want to hear at great volume how brilliant their children are or where they buy their clothes and cars etc etc. tedious.
The staff were great. One young man went out of his way to bring our dog some fresh water . Yes, the girls behind the bar were a bit ditzy, but it was very busy and I think that one of them was new and unused to working the till! But they were very pleasant and this does go a long way with me. Some bar people do not bother with people once they hit middle age and it can be very disheartening.
You can eat in the bar from the extensive bar menu but We ate in the restaurant in the evening. Do book a table if you don't want to be disappointed. The menu is varied and there would be something for everyone. The wine list is somewhat limited but my pinot grigio was ok, and my partner had an acceptable rose. it would have been a surprise had the list been a long one. My partner said that the chicken, ham and leek pie was the best that she had ever had. High praise indeed. My beer battered haddock was excellent. Pity I hadn't got the appetite to eat all of the chips.
After a little break we decided on crime brûlée on rhubarb..again my partner said it was delicious. I had the home made sherry trifle in individual glass trifle glass. Mmmmm- absolutely yummy!

Then we retired to our room, fully replete.
One gripe from us . The lovely room that we had was overlooking the harbour, but it was also directly over the patio area next to the restaurant and bar. For some reason, some men aged 40+ decided to sit out on the verandah and guffaw loudly for a couple of hours at their own jokes. Granted, there was no unpleasantness and laughter is better than arguments, but perhaps they could be reminded to keep the noise levels down for the sake of the other guests?
They did the same at breakfast!

Breakfast is good value for money. If you have the full breakfast you can also eat the continental breakfast. The choice of fresh fruit was very good ..and there were yoghurt a and cheese and meats if you like them. You choose the items that you want from the menu and it came presented a bit hap hazardly. Wonderful fried bread ( a real treat!) and the bacon was delicious as was the fried egg. I do think that grilling the bacon and sausage would be better. I did not like the sausage. The mushrooms again would benefit from not being fried, I think.
My partner had the smoked haddock with bread and butter and declared it to be delicious.
And the coffee and tea were great!
Checkout was swift and efficient and all in all the staff were great and did make you feel as if they were bothered about you.
We will certainly be returning again . We felt really relaxed when we departed- something we both needed! The key thing for us was whether our elderly dog could stay. Apart from the steep steps, he absolutely loved the hotel and settled really well. Always a good sign for us!

The hotel is nicely situated close to the harbour with plenty of walks to the main harbour and sea views.
On arriving and parked in the large car park we were a bit put off by the worn carpet and broken door bell in the entrance area. However on arriving at reception all was well a swift booking in by a pleasant lady and we were soon on our way to our room. This was very clean and tidy and adequate for us, our son and others in the family group had an enormous room also very clean and tidy.
There were some nice touches in our rooms tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. An iron and board also being supplied.
The bathroom was well appointed but a little tired although the décor was not too bad, just needed a little modernising.
The breakfast in the morning was superb with a large selection of fruit and cereals, followed by our choice of cooked food. The quality was excellent and nicely served with tea or coffee and toast.
The meals were of good value and reasonably priced with a good selection available.
My only complaint being that the cost of beer and drinks was too high even for a hotel.
We all enjoyed our stay and would consider a further visit

Room Tip: Harbour view rooms have huge windows.

We stayed one night here on a Saturday in Salterns Hotel which we booked online. If you like stunning views over the harbour and being surrounded by boats and all that goes with it this is the place to stay. Our room had superb views, was clean bright and reasonably comfortable. En suite bathroom was spotless with a plentiful supply of white fluffy towels. The décor was a bit dated and the mattress was definitely in need of a change - we commented on this . Another niggle was given the size of the room the flat screen TV was too small. Parking is included and right next to the hotel. Location is quiet and convenient by car for Poole town centre.

We were greeted on arrival by a cheerful and helpful receptionist who booked us in for dinner. Bar staff were also friendly and knew what they were doing. House wine by the glass reasonably priced and good with my fish dish (baked cod and very fresh fish, to be expected in Poole) However there was a break in communications with the dining room who had not received our booking. The women in charge retrieved the situation and found us a nice table in the bar where we received table service and enjoyed a very good meal.
Breakfast was excellent. Check out was friendly and efficient (different receptionist )
We are world travellers so are able to tell the difference between good and bad service.
There were a few niggles which did not spoil our stay but if they are sorted out would have tipped my assessment from a strong 3.5/4 to a 5.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with Harbour views.

Called in at Salterns for lunch - lovely sunny day & we thought we would enjoy the view and some good food - service was indifferent and we were told to help ourselves to cutlery & seasonings and sauces to take outside. (could have provided them in a basket or similar or brought them out with our meal.
Cutlery was dishwasher stained and condiment set old and grubby, tables and chairs in garden also grubby & weeds around tubs showed lack of care & neglect.
Food poor - gammon overcooked and fried egg was hard. Crabcakes not appetising at all!, chips asked for did not arrive and had to be reordered.
Manager asked when collecting plates if everything was O.K - when we told him of our disappointment he just shrugged, said sorry about that but he hadn't had any other complaints would pass our comments on to the chef!
Salterns used to be a good place to eat and we used to take our visitors but we definitely won't be going again!
