We stayed three nights in a sea view room. In spite of its position over the garden and bar, it was very quiet, and as other reviewers have said, the views were magnificent. The weather was unusually hot for the UK, but without asking, fans were provided which kept our room (huge and south facing) very cool. We were delighted that we chose Salterns over the other contenders (Thistle in Poole and Sandbanks Hotel) as we thought the position was perfect to get around the area and meet up with Friends who found the parking facilities much better than the other two hotels.

The restaurant is only one of from pub food. We were very happy to eat there on our first night, but ate out on the other evenings. Breakfasts were fine - although closing at 10.00am would have been nicer than 9.30. Unfortunately, we have to agree with some of the comments regarding the bar. The hotel is in a popular location, and effectively part of the marina. It therefore attracts a lot of non-residents some of whom are less than totally polite, a position which is not helped by pretty some incompetent bar staff. Not a big deal, and certainly not enough to stop us staying here again, but which leads me to reduce "excellent" to "good" .

Room Tip: Pay for the sea view!

We have nothing but praise for this harbour side hotel. There was a warm welcome from all the staff. A spotlessly clean and very comfortable and well appointed room offered magnificent views across to Brownsea Islad and the Purbeck Hills.
Breakfast was plentiful served by smiling staff who were making families feel at home. There was a very good selection of cereals fruit and cold meats at the self service buffet and cooked breakfasts served promptly and very well presented.
This was a very good experience and I would thoroughly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Pick a harbour view

Best to tread carefully in the Bar at Salterns, for fear of upsetting the locals and the boat folk as they don't take too kindly to holidaymakers entering their territory.

Frankly, the bar service is poor and is not helped by the afore mentioned locals and boat people expecting to be served ahead of us holiday makers who wanted to enjoy an early evening drink in the sunshine in one of Poole's nicest settings.

I lost count of the number of occasions these people jumped the queue to get served first and quite frequently with the knowledge of the bar staff and on one occasion the owner/manageress.

This hotel is in a lovely setting, seems popular, but is let down by extremely shoddy behaviour in the bar. Not impressed.

My mum and I ate here on a Monday evening. We ate in the bar and the food was delicious. We weren't rushed and nothing was too much trouble. We both had lasagne and we shared chips and garlic bread. We were too full for pudding unfortunately as they looked good.
Cannot wait to go again!

Pros = This hotel is situated very nicely on Salterns Harbour & the sea view room we had was large and clean, bar is nice and outside table area was also nice being next to the water and boats.... Cons = Extemely poor service at breakfast time, we entered the restaurant which only had 6 other guests, we waited for for 15 mins to be asked for tea, we were given no menu until we asked = 30mins, waited a further 1hr for basic english breakfast ( we had 2 young children who were getting bored ! ), had breakfast then offered toast ! ?... Carpark a nightmare couldn't a parking space, had to parked on double yellow lines but we were lucky no ticket... Very noisy at night as there was a group of lads playing music very loudly and having a barbecue below our window in the hotel garden which is organised by hotel ?.

Room Tip: Sea View only, rear is carpark, But ask hotel about wedding parties / outside parties = we had a ver...

Needed a few days away for a relaxed break. This hotel met that brief. Great location for getting around. Had a side sea view room with a good view over to the spur out to Sandbanks. Lots of interesting activity in the harbour with the boats and kite surfers etc. The upstairs may show some signs of the age of the building but did nothing to detract from our enjoyment. The downstairs bar and restaurant are quite stylish and very comfortable for either drinks or dining. The terrace and lawns gave opportunities to sit out on a lovely evening and take the air. The overall position and views were just so attractive that if you like to be by the sea this is a great spot for you. The area around is quiet but everywhere you may wish to visit in the area is easily accessible. The food for both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful and it wont be too long before we visit again and explore further afield along the coast.

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay in this hotel. It is modern, clean, bright and we were delighted to be upgraded to a room with dual aspect views over the harbour. It is in a great location if you enjoy gazing at boats and people enjoying themselves on the water. Of greatest delight to us was the welcome our two small dogs received. They could join us in the bar for our evening meal and we sat outside for a beautiful breakfast the next morning, served by a very courteous, cheerful and friendly restaurant manager. If you did not realise this was a dog friendly hotel you might be a little disappointed with the carpet in the bedroom but when you have dogs with you it is a relief to find it is not brand new! Thank you for a very nice, if short, stay.

Room Tip: Request a harbour view on second or third floor if possible. If you are not a dog owner they have t...
