“good disabled facilites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

we attended a concert to see Kodo the Japanese drumming performers and found the parking for disabled drivers to be right outside if you got there early enough once inside through large automatic entrance doors the restaurant to be on the ground floor making it really easy for access .
The food in the restaurant was alright but the system for ordering was not the best as we had to lineup to order as there was very little on display at the counter only a few snacks no main courses.
Once inside the concert hall the seats designated for the disabled were very good with a great view and leaving when the concert finished was quick and easy via a very good lift system.

We saw the Kodo Drummers and they were fabulous. The Lighthouse is a centre of excellence for many different types of entertainment. Check it out.

“Improving - but slowly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013

The Winter Gardens used to be the home of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO), but closure was inevitable and with that in mind, the town council built the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC). Unfortunately, as with all non-professional councils, they wanted a building that was all things to all people, but as is always the case, it fell far short, which was evident from the opening night concert.
By this time the BSO had started playing in the Poole Lighthouse and their concerts there became more and more frequent so that the situation is now that their winter seaon of Wednesday night concerts is always held there. (The more popular music Saturday night concerts being held in the Bournemouth Pavilion.)
Lighthouse has no architectural merit, serving merely as a shell to house a (small) cinema, a theatre and a concert hall, which is the only one on the south coast, but despite that, the music standard is very high, attracting resident conductors such as Paavo Berglund, Simon Rattle, Jakob Kreitsberg, Marin Alsop and the current incumbent Kirill Karabits. They also broadcast regularly on Radio 3, appear at the Proms and tour overseas.
The building has a restaurant which used to offer a huge selection of food in the evenings, but it appears that it is now under new management, as the staff has changed, the menu has been slimmed down and they offer deals, such as 2 Light Bite lunches for £10, coffee & a cake for £3.50 and if you buy 2 large glasses of wine, you get the rest of the bottle for free. There is a dearth of good eating places in that part of town, so with little competition, the food does not have to be that good, but it is! However, if you are going to an evening performace and want to eat there beforehand, be sure to have placed your order by 6.15, otherwise the specials will have gone and you might have a problem finding somewhere to sit.
The BIG let-down is the coffee, the Bistro being the only place in the building with a proper Gaggia-type coffee maker, the bars only having press-button machines that deliver dishwater.

Thank you for your review and for your kind comments.

Lighthouse is very proud to have been home to the BSO since 1978, and to provide them with the facilities to plan, create, rehearse and perform their work, which is then exported across the region, and indeed, the world, via broadcasts and recordings. We are extremely lucky to have such a world-class orchestra here in Poole.

I will pass on your kind comments regarding the food to BH Live, who operate the Terrace Bistro here at Lighthouse, and will let our Bar Manager have your feedback regarding the coffee.

I hope you will return soon for another event with us.
