“Jewel in the Crown”
Reviewed 1 March 2013

Stayed in the Shah of Persia for a long weekend due to the gathering of the family. Booked it first and then read previous Trip advisor reviews and was very relived and now here is mine.
Rooms............All you need. Good rooms with spotlessly clean and comfortable beds. Felt very homely. Bathroom was very good standard with loads of hot water.. Central heating effective. And although a little noisy at times did not interrupt me sleeping; they do supply ear plugs for the more sensitive but we didn't use them. TV with DVD player and coffee tea etc.
We did feel the rooms could do with a lick of pain and spruce of the furniture as both looked a trifle tired. On top of that baring in mind we stayed 3 nights no one came to the room to bed-make, provide clean towels. or replenish. the tea and coffee. We assumed that this was not included in the ridiculously inexpensive per night rate. We did feel also that the room cleaning itself could be improved upon.

Breakfast............is part of the rate and we stayed for £35 per night. We did find it hit and miss in standard and service. Sat morning was very good in quality, quality and service. Sunday was a disappointment every arrived having come out of a deep fat fryer and over cooked and cold. Service was not great either. Monday on the other was excellent food standard excellent.

The Restaurant...................use the restaurant we found it a really very good value . They do two meals for one and if you were staying there was further 20% off and there was no compromise on standard. Every MEAL( not breakfast) was very good.

Location ..............I actually chose .this hotel because I knew its location and public transport links to both Poole and Bournemouth. You could easily walk to Poole but buses run from just outside the Hotel and a two minute walk to to the stop that goes to Bournemouth. The buses advertise a 3 minute service I am not sure it is quite that but it is certainly very frequent. I parked the car and got around with easy on public transport.

Easy to book the stay and found the up to the last minute cancellation and pay on departure (without even a deposit taken) refreshingly trusting and I liked it.

Would I stay again I certainly would and would like to thank the team for a more than pleasant stay and any critisism made was made purely to HELP management. For those who are thinking of booking please do it really is a lovely little hotel to stay in a lovely part of the world.
I will definately be back.

We stayed four nights We were greeted in a friendly manner on arrival and my husband took our bags to the room while I waited in the bar for ouyr niece. When my husband came down he said that I might have difficulty as there were quite a lot of stairs. The problem was soon resolved. We were offered a Room in a row just outside the hotel which I think may have been converted garages. The room was quite small but well decorated and warm. It also had a well appointed bathroom.
The breakfast was excellent. The rest of the food was O.K. and good value for money. Circumstances meant that we had to eat early. There was only one person behind the bar. She was serving bar, taking dinner orders and waiting tables. There were quite a lot in and it was too much for one person. I saw one family leave because they didn't like waiting. This wasn't the fault of the person behind the bar. She was working her socks off and remained calm and pleasant to everyone.
We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: If you have difficulty walking ask for a ground floor room as there is no lift.

Stayed one night before an early morning ferry to Jersey and the Shah of Persia proved ideal for our needs. We stayed in a family room which was very spacious, clean and tidy. For relatives staying in a double room however, the room was a fair bit smaller.

Walked in to town after arriving which was maybe 20-30 mins walk but through the park it was a pleasant stroll.

Food was very good for the price (lots of deals) and good selection of beers.

Breakfast was ample selection and early enough to still make an early ferry with time to spare.

When we first arrived, first impressions were very good. The young man who booked us in was very pleasant and helpful (could not fault him throughout our stay). Our room was spacious and looked very clean. Wifi is good, took a little while to sort the TV out (no instructions), bathroom more than adequate.

We decided to go and have some tea around 6pm, most tables were reserved. When asked if there were any tables for two we were told that the evening was pre book only (not mentioned on check-in) but two tables were available. We were told that normal menu would be available up until 7pm but after that it was a taster menu only to promote the new menu. Brilliant we thought, selected our food and went to the bar to order. Were told to sit down and they would do table service. 10/15 mins passed and no one had come over. So back up to the bar my partner went, we were then informed that the normal menu wasn't available and that only the taster menu was available but this wouldn't be served until after 7pm. We had traveled 5/6 hours that day so decided to have a drink and look for else where.

Looking at the service from our seats it was apparent that no one really had a clue as to what they were doing and many customers were turned away as no notices were put up saying that this was pre book only. The manager came across, said that it would be the same the following night but he could recommend another pub under the same company which was approx 20 mins up the road. We came back to the pub after our meal, had a drink then went upstairs.

Its a good job they provide ear plugs as the main road is very noisy even in the early hours. There is also a hospital nearby so there were plenty of sirens going off. The toilet was slightly faulty in the fact that if the flush is knocked the toilet never fills up but constantly empties. So after an hour of messing around with that we settled into bed. The heating is noisy and left on over night, our kettle was also faulty as even when the light is off it continues to boil. The pillows were lumpy and mismatched, the cupboards had others however these were quite dirty.

The following morning we went down to breakfast. There is limited cereal, yoghurts etc and milk (left uncovered) and orange juice. The waitress came over to take our cooked breakfast order. You can tailor it to your tastes so i ordered Beans on Toast, my partner had a full breakfast. When they arrived my partner commented "i hope you like your toast well done" and flipped it over to show an almost black piece of toast. My toast looked OK until i moved my beans to discover the chef had obviously used them to cover a cremated and unedible piece of toast. The other pieces weren't much better and most was left. To add to it, the beans were stone cold. The waitress was no where to be seen and never came to check if it was OK.

The second night of our stay was worse than the first. The TV decided to switch itself on at 4.30 in the morning for no reason at all.

Safe to say we wont be coming back unless big changes are made. Very disappointing.

Valued Guest,

It is disheartening to read of your experience with us, although there does seem to be some differences between what is described here and what you experienced.

Firstly thank you for your positive comments on your check in and cleanliness of the room - they have been passed on to the relevant members of the team.

As you state we offer earplugs for lighter sleepers and our website and booking channels all state that we are on a bustling crossroads on the main route into Poole close to the hospital, all rooms have secondary glazing and the majority of our guests do not experience any issues, as stated on the website and on previous comments by guests we will happily move people to the rear of the premises should we be asked to do so.

With reagrds to your room issues it is always difficult to help if they are only mentioned online when you have left, again had you mentioned this at any time during your stay, to anyone we could have looked into them for you, I have been unable to replicate your issues with the items in your room - the room you stayed in has been in constant occupancy for the whole month and I have had no other comments from guests...

With regards to the heating it is controlled by the temperature of the room and the thermostatic valve, which if adjusted will turn off - it is running all the time at the minute, as per our previous review because it is particularily cold but this can still be overidden by the valve.

With reference to the restaurant, at check in the special arrangements that evening were explained to you and one of the spare tables allocated - there were signs througout the hotel and on both entrances - as stated to you at the time there was a special set menu of Three Courses for £6.95 on that and the following evening and, understandably we were completely full for the night - we had kept a couple of tables free for guests such as yourselves, and provision with other local sites - the other rooms stopping that night took us up on this offer, during our conversation we discussed that you did not like anything on the set menu and were offered some alternatives, which you also declined and asked where the nearest other place was that you could get discount, which I duly obliged, again no attempt was made by yourselves to express any dissatifaction, infact you said you were enjoying your stay.

Should you be in the area again I would be happy for you to enjoy an evening with us on the house, should this be suitable for you.

Many Thanks Mark and Sarah Leech MBII Managers

Paid £35 for bed and breakfast for 2. Room was large and comfortable and hotel was very clean. Only 2 minor gripes - the central heating was very noisy and left on all night (understandable given the snow outside) which kept us awake and the amendment to our booking which I had arranged on the phone a few days earlier had not been done when we arrived nor were we expected. Staff were very friendly however and problems were easily resolved.

Valued Guest,

Thank you for your comments on your recent visit in such unhospitable weather, our apologies again for the noise from the heating but as you say this was understandable as it had been working flat-out for three days!

We would look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Stayed at the hotel this week for three nights and had a very pleasant experience. From the moment I arrived the staff were friendly and efficient in their service. The room was large, and contained a large double bed with a dressing table. The bathroom was clean and the shower was excellent. I ate at the hotel for all three nights of my stay, there is a large choice of menu and the meal I have were to a high standard.

Will definitely be returning!
Thank you to all the staff that made my experience enjoyable!
