“Fantastic anniversary”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

We booked into the hotel for our pearl wedding anniversary, nervous but excited to how things would be as never stayed away. Many reviews say they are disappointed, so lets set the record straight, Firstly very inviting as you enter the grounds, reception lovely warm feeling. staff fall over them selves to help you, you only have to ask and they will look after for all your needs, and yes we had many needs to cover, from comfort to eating,
What you have to remember with this building its not new build hotel, its a 17th country mansion with history, on lovely grounds.
if it had new this and new that it would have the same character. open stairs case running from the foyer up to the rooms, the rooms are very nice and clean. great house keeper. give her credit. she does a lovely job, nothing to much trouble for them.
We stayed in room 241. looking out on to the gardens,
the room was warm, comfortable, every thing you need. we didn't leave the hotel as the room was all that we wanted.
The chief was out standing, as he cattered for our veggiterain needs, nothing again was to much trouble,
The waiters and waitress take pride in their postion, as do as the staff. with warm smiles, as they great you while your stay.
We shall be defaniltey be going back this years. and will be sending daughter for a break.
and will use this hotel for all future breaks,,
If you looking for a new build n ultra modern then this is not for you,
but if you want friendly family attomspher this is the place for you.
We can not speak highly enough of them. 110% given all you have to do is ask,
Thank you to all memembers of staff, manageress. xx
thank you.

Stayed overnight on 4th April, first impressions were quite good the reception area and lounges were clean and nicely decorated. I would say everywhere else was quite dated and could do with a good overhaul. We stayed in room 318 and I wouldn't advise anybody to stay there, the bed was absolutely horrendous, it was so hard both my husband and myself ended up losing the circulation in our arms and legs! Needless to say hardly any sleep was had and when we did try to sleep we were awoken not once but twice in the early hours of the morning by empty bottles being thrown and smashed into the recycling area! We did not feel rested at all. The bedroom itself was OK if a little jaded. The food was average but the drinks were extortionate (£16 for a bottle of rose wine) The soda water was undrinkable, it was completely flat and even when the barman tipped the syphon upside down it made no difference and they charged £2.40 for the privilege, an absolute scandal in our opinion. The breakfast next morning was very nice, hot and plenty of choice. We complained to the under manager and she assured us it would be dealt with by the manager. As yet we are still awaiting the outcome. We feel really aggrieved that our complaints have not been addressed and will not recommend this hotel at all.

Room Tip: Do not choose room 318

we stayed in the Blackwell in February for my birthday with my family a party of 6 which included
my 3 year old grandson. we had got a good deal by using a voucher from our local newspaper.
The hotel is lovely with nice grounds although it did look a bit tired as we made our way to the bedrooms. The lift was out of order and that was a bit tricky as both my husband and I have had hip replacements and we had the little one with us. The bedrooms we had were all together and were really clean and a decent size with nice comfortable beds. We ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely with a nice choice. The staff were really welcoming and the service was excellent. We did use the pool and sauna and whilst it wasn't the best spa I have been too it was OK again a bit tired could do with some updating. There is only a small lounge area and if the hotel had been full it may have been a different story but we did have a very pleasant weekend for the money we spent.

We stayed for a weekend, very welcoming staff, lovely clean cosy room looking out onto the garden :), bathroom was beautifully cleaned well done house keeping! Meal in the bar was excellent and very reasonable, my hubby went to the gym and said it was very poor, this was the only bad thing I can say really, the hotel it's self needs a bit of updating but is understandable with the age of the hotel, overall a very pleasant place to visit and relax :)

Bought this as a two night groupon to take somebody away as a gift. Chosen because ad looked great and it said it had pool/gym/spa etc, free parking, free wifi, meals and wine etc.
First impressions were good, driveway great, reception great, room just average, both nights they quibbled the deal we were on and although we stood our ground, it felt embarrassing. Breakfast very, limited (again this is only in my opinion), yes we were on a deal but it was the same for people who were not. Maybe im just being picky but if you see my other reviews I give praise and credit where its deserved. Full breakfast, no poached eggs only fried, pink sausages, no mushrooms, no hash browns, no bagels, no bread rolls, no crumpets, in fact none of the extras that you would normally have at a hotel of this standard. Basic low cost low frills budget cereal, one type of juice as the sole choice, vending machine for tea and coffee (ours was disgusting). Think ive rambled on about breakfast enough but you get the idea. On the second evening both of the tables next to ours were both complaining, one sent food back and the other had been waiting 45 mins. Our food of an evening was quite good but menu is quite limited for choice.
Pool is very small and old, gym (weights area), bit dated but functional, cardio area had all you needed but some were out of order. Now to most this wouldn't have been an issue but out of nine places we were looking at staying this one was pushing its gym/spa facilities. But they are there and are useable as long as you don't expect a lot.
Wifi was a voucher you collect at reception, you need one for each device something to note if your travelling on business and if you are there more than one night you need to go down next day for new ones. Only mentioning this as lift to our floor was out of order so the up down and being a long way from reception when you've just driven for 2 hours was a pain.
But on the whole both my partner and I said we wouldn't stay there again and both said it came across as jaded, tired and breakfast a big let down. Sorry Blackwell Grange but just an honest opinion.
Partner wishes to add, there were plenty of friendly smiling polite staff and this was a positive.
Many of the things we would have changed were nothing to do with the day to day staff.
Booking was very hard and we were led a merry dance for 3 days

Room Tip: We seemed to be a long long way from reception or restaurant, this could be a problem for less mobil...

Stayed here with 15 other lady golfers. We had 2 rounds of golf, dinner, bed and breakfast. We had an excellent deal which was well worth the money. Our evening meal and breakfast were excellent, little things like a hot plate, very attentive staff, excellent service and good choice of food. Drink prices were very reasonable as well. The hotel itself is well presented with lots of choice in where to sit and have a drink or cuppa etc. The bedrooms on the first floor where we stayed were lovely and clean and a reasonable size but could do with a little updating. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and thought it was well worth the money.
