We spent 3 nights at The St. George hotel in Darlington as the base for our coach tour. It’s a 2-star hotel located just next to Durham Tees Valley Airport (just a walk through the parking lot).
It proved to be a central location to visit the Yorkshire Moors, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and towns like Whitby, Richmond and Beamish.
Our in-laws were given Room 66 on the upper floor while we were assigned Room 51 on the ground floor. At their age they would have had much difficulty climbing the steps (with us trying to lift their luggage up after them as there is no one to assist with your suitcases here) and cumbersome bringing their bags and medical supplies up and down every day during our stay (there is no elevator) so we told reception that we were switching rooms to give them the ground floor room instead. With the room switch, our room set-up was double instead of twin; however it was properly set up for us while we were down to dinner.
Reception was helpful and tried to assist though at times they seemed unfocused or unable to cope.
The room seemed dated but was clean. We had adequate closet space, which is also a peeve when traveling. There was a decent coffee/tea service tray in the room. A fan was provided in case the room got hot. The beds though were not comfortable at all and we never got a decent night sleep during our stay.
The bathroom was small but workable. Only suggestion would be to install grab bars in the bath as the only thing to hold onto to get in and out the high slippery bathtub is the hot towel rack! Ouch! Both my husband and I ended up doing this several times during our stay.
Our bathroom was clean but the tub in my in-laws' room had mold on the edges. My 80-year old father-in-law could not use the bath at all during his stay as the tub was so difficult to climb in and out of!
Our soap dispenser was empty after our first night's use so it was not replenished after the previous guest vacated the room. We informed the front desk about it. The next morning, thankfully with the bar of soap and shower gel we had brought with us, we were able to shower.
We decided to wait to see if housekeeping would refill the empty dispenser. To our dismay, when we returned after touring on our second day, the dispenser was still empty! By the end of our stay the dispenser remained empty! It clearly showed that housekeeping was not doing their jobs efficiently and checking bathroom supplies; and it also showed that front office was not following up on guests’ requests.
The food with our package was decent but nothing ‘wow’ about it. The service staff in the restaurant though were quick on their feet and efficient. When my mother-in-law had an asthma attack, our server helped her outside to get some fresh air, brought her some water and checked back twice to make sure she was doing alright. Very kind service indeed. It would seem that food & beverage staff are well equipped to train the rest of the hotel’s staff in superior customer service standards.
