“A French Oasis - a wonderful experience and great value.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2007

The location of this Campanile is on an industrial site on the outskirts of Wakefield. But don't let that put you off; this is actually the nearest you'll get to the genuine French Campanile in the UK. And ignore the comments which are not recent - this is not Bates Motel or a threatening place or full of drunks. There's been a change of local management who know how to run budget accommodation properly. There was even a red Ferrari in the car park.

It is run by young French people, which lifts it out of the ordinary, and the bar/restaurant seems to be a hang-out for French people living locally. The motel is exactly the same design as most of the French Campaniles - they must have imported almost every part of the building from France. It also has the restaurant with the salad bar and "dish of the day" for £10.95 at which Campanile in France excel. All of this makes you feel like you are actually in France and on holiday - now you can't say that about a Premier Lodge!

The room was exactly as any other room I've been in in a French Campanile, down to the weather proof carpets on the external access routes, the shutters on the windows and the electricity socket partially hidden behind the curtain.

There was lots of hot water in the perfectly adequate bathroom and the big bed was extremely comfortable with good bedlinen and pillows.

We were there the night England played (and beat)France in Paris in the RWC, and there was great atmosphere, enhanced by watching the match on French TV5Monde and not the ITV.

We had a great time, lovely food and wine and good night's sleep for £40.95. Merci beaucoup!

(One complaint - they'd run out of Rémy Martin and the only cognac was Courvoisier!)

I stayed in the hotel with my boyfriend after we had attended a wedding reception close by.

The rooms were large and the beds were very comfy after a long day.
The rooms had everything you could need in them for a one night stay and the check in staff were very friendly.

I would definately stay in another Campanile hotel, as if they are anything like this one they would be good value for money and provide you with everything you need for a short stay over.

Alright before I start .. yes it is located in a sort of retail park area ... but I have no complaints whatsoever about the Campanile ... a taxi ride into town on average cost around £3.50 and for 4 people that works out as next to nothing!

We stayed here for a lads weekend ... and for the price we could not have asked for more. The rooms and bathrooms were clean ... the shower was good ... clean towels ... and the reception staff were the great!

Don't go expecting any luxury, but if you're on a budget I can't imagine being able to find a better place.

I had one of the best weekends ever!

I stayed at the Campanile for 3 weeks whilst working nearby. It was booked by my employer, and after reading some of the other reviews before i left, i was dreading my stay there.

However, when i arrived, i was pleasantly surprised. The staff are french, but have excellent english. The layout is like that of a motel. The rooms have all been refurbished since any of the other reviews have been written. Each room has a nice modern en-suite bathroom with arguably the most powerful shower i have ever used!!

The beds are doubles (not 2 singles pushed together) and are surprisingly comfortable. The sheets and towels are changed every day, along with a thorough room clean which always left the room smelling fresh on my arrival from work.

Rooms have a tv with 14 channels and an alarm clock, there is also a T-mobile wi-fi hotspot if you're willing to pay for it. The hotel also gives you a pass which enables you free use of a local health and fitness club (greens) and excellent place to train or relax. Irons and boards are also available on request.

The cooked breakfast is tasty and the restaurant meals are very nice, though maybe slightly expensive (approx £9 for your average meal).

To summarise, the campanile is by no means the ritz, but at £40 per night, value for money it is second to none. It is far from unpleasant and i would definitely stay there again

Heard a drunk the in the next room - rooms lobbies are open to the world and I felt scared, so checked out immediately.

They were helpful and gave us no trouble when we did this

I agree with the other reviewer - the hotel is at the far end of an industrial estate (tyre shops, fast food manufacturers), which is a bit weird. We stayed there for 2 nights about a year ago - it may be refurbed by now. The only place we've been to where my wife said she 'actually felt frightened'.
Restaurant food was OK but you just felt like everything needed a drastic refurb. Did not have any breakfasts.

Next door to us was a group of lager-drinking loud-mouthed people coming and going. We asked to be moved but this was denied and we were made to feel that we were being too awkward by the french-speaking staff on reception.

In fairness, the neighbours went clubbing at about 9pm and did not wake us on their return. But watching people dash past our window (chalet-access type hotel layout) with cans of beer, shouting, was scary.

Also in fairness, we recently stayed at the Campanile Glasgow, which is almost brand new, and it was fantastic. As were the French / Glaswegian reception desk staff.

Hotel is like the Bates Motel in parts. Nasty looking concrete flat appearance with entry to some rooms being up poorly lit stairs which did not seem secure. Overall as a single female traveller I did not feel safe.

Is currently being re-furbished but I stayed in the older part. Damp walls and ceilings, stained floors, insecure doors, bathroom filthy with mould all over, stained bedding. Truely awful.

The restaurant is OK but not spectacular.

I would not recommend unless you get a refurbished room and are not alone.
