Quantock Orchard Caravan Park
Reviewed 17 March 2013

There is little positive to say about this site.

It is open all year but the shop was virtually empty.
There are only 2 shower cubicles each for men and women which is a totally unsatisfactory ratio for a campsite this size. And one of the mens cubicles was out of action.
The facilities are cold and damp and do not appear to have received any investment for decades.
The washing up area is likewise old, cold and decrepit.
For the fee charged, there are campsites which provide far, far higher standards of provision and there is simply no excuse for such low standards here in the 21st Century.

We find this reviiewer very difficult to believe , as we have just been upgraded from 4 pennants to 5 pennants by a well known organization (subject to two screens added in the gent's toilet by next Winter), the inspector said that he had never seen the park in better condition and awarded the highest percentage marks possible. These inspectors are professional people and do not give these awards lightly.

As the weather was so cold we were a bit hesitant to stay in our motor-home on the edge of the Quantocks in February. However, we needn't have worried. Nothing was too much trouble; we even had our newspapers delivered to the motor-home.The facilities on this sight are very good, spotlessly clean and grounds well maintained. The only downside was that the shower rooms were so cold! Lovely hot water but cold surroundings. However, what else can you expect in February! There is a bus stop on the main road outside the campsite providing a service from Taunton to Minehead, via Watchet and Dunster, so plenty to do, and as we have just retired and have bus passes, didn't cost us anything to travel. The site is also only 3/4 mile away from Crowcombe Station on the West Somerset Railway. It's very difficult to find campsites which are open during the winter, but this one is and we shall certainly be visiting it again.

First thing to mention is that if you have a withheld number you will go to an answer service. The husband would not leave our ex directory number on the answer machine and we wondered why we could not get through. The campsite said they will always ring you back. We were quoted a price which did not match the on line price but they were happy to match it.The ownwers/Warden are polite and friendly and Richard appears to work from Dawn to Dusk. They were happy to help in way and we found that they would also go out of their way to provide good customer service.. The fish and chip van is on site on saturday about 5pm and again happy and friendly staff. The shop on site is very small and only useful for top ups or forgotten items. There is a small play area for the children. They also have a large microwave for customers to use. They have a small games area with a pool table and table tennis etc and of course the swimming pool which is open in the summer. Also on site are gym facilities which you have to pay for. This campsite is one that does not charge for your dogs but there is no on site exercise area and you have to walk them down the country lane to the station and although not busy there is still traffic and no pavement. There is plenty of areas to walk the dogs in the surrounding area and the nearby pebble beaches at Dunster and Blue Anchor are open to dogs all year round. There is a bus stop near to the entrance of the campsite taking you to either Taunton or Minehead areas but the site is rural. The pitches are not large and are close together but are shaded by a lot of mature trees and hedges. The toilets and showers do need updating but they are clean and the showers worked fine. You can at times hear the main road but it is not intrusive. This is a small family run site they do not have the resources to do everything at once and they obviously work very hard if you want an eco friendly site with grass roofs and solar heating on the washrooms etc dont stay here, this is a friendly, reasonably priced site that are working hard to give the customers what they want in a beautiful area and somewhere we would return.

Our first visit to this campsite in a tent and with our 5 year old daughter. The site itself is nicely kept and the facilities are good and 3 nights for 2 made it very cheap. Very warm and powerful showers, clean and decent loos, etc. We went in early September in the last days of the school holiday and it was very quiet and but I can see that this site could get crowded in the height of the season. Pitches are a bit smaller/closer together than in other places we've camped and you do occasionally notice the nearby road noise but this wasn't a problem for us. Swimming pool on site was great but was quite chilly!

I used to come this this site EVERY weekend from the age of 12-16 under different owners and I had such a fantastic time. As a forty year old mum of two now, I wanted to create the same wonderful childhood memories for my kids ....as did my sister's family...and so we booked two caravans some six months ago. The day before our trip, the owner called to advise they had double booked us and so we all had to cram into one 8 berth caravan. As we had no choice but to accept this, we accepted his gracious offer of having to pay no more than the deposit that we had already paid.

However, the caravan was shabby and dirty to the extent that they needed a more substantial door mate and maybe a shoe box to encourage people to take their shoes off.Fixtures were broken or missing, in that the toilet door had no handle inside to pull it shut and we only had enough cutlery for five people (which they obliging supplied upon request). The condensation from the window had dripped onto the beds making the mattress cover soaked.

The site itself holds so many fond memories for me, and my kids had a fantastic time playing in the park as I used to twenty five years ago. However, some parts of the site are just looking plain shabby, especially the toilet block which could do with a revamp. However, the pool is great and my kids loved it as much as I used to.

It is with great sadness that we won't be coming back next year and so my kids won't get to experience what I did and have fantastic childhood memories.

I could have probably forgiven a lot of this were it not for the fact that we were double booked and told so late the day before.

Finally, I would still recommend this site to people but as someone that knows how much it has changed over the years, I won't be returning myself. Such a shame.

Having read some reviews on TA wasn't too sure what to expect. We stayed August bank holiday weekend so full site with kids on holidays! However I have to say the site had a really good atmosphere when full, didn't feel crammed in at all. The site is really well landscaped and well maintained so everything felt really good. The site had a great outdoor swimming pool even with the British weather the pool was a brilliant bonus. Everything you would need was on the site - the shop had all the basics, the pitch we were on had water and waste. Kids play area was certainly keeping them entertained! Nice walk down to the steam railway nearby. Not too sure where some of the negative comments came from as we enjoyed the site, had a relaxing weekend and would return. I think that pretty much sums it up. Also the greeting on arrival was fantastic - really friendly and relaxed. Would recommend!

Not really a person who comes back off a holiday and feel the need to write a review of the experience but have just returned from a bank holiday stay here and wanted to let others know what a great place this is. Was very surprised to read the bad reviews on here as this is a great site for everyone. I was worried with it being the bank holiday and the site fully booked that we may be cramped and have little privacy, I couldn't be more wrong. The site was full but we had plenty of room for our tent and car and had hedges between us and the other campers so didnt feel uncomfortable at all. Facilities were great, nice hot showers which were kept clean and never had to wait to use one.
The grounds are lovely and very well kept, there was a heated outdoor pool to use free of charge which my partner used and said it was very pleasant to swim in. There was wi fi near reception that could be used for free and a games room with a tv in if you happen to miss a few home comforts.
There was also a great park for the kids to use, we went as a couple but will definitely be coming again with the nephews as is a great family friendly campsite where the kids can run around in a safe environment.
This is a family run business and a lovely family they are, very helpful and laid back. Pool shut at 6pm but they allowed us to swim after this after coming back from a day out, bikes hired have no strict return times and if you have any problems when out on them they're happy to come and get you. We hired bikes and rode a little way out on them and then decided it was too much hard work cycling :-) cae back and our money was happily returned to us, no problem at all.
As with regards to what to do, we would recommend a trip on the steam railway, this is only a short walk away (come out the site and then turn left and walk down the road) views are great and the stations well kept, staff at them all are ever so friendly it's like a step back into time and thoroughly enjoyable whatever the weather. We stopped off at minehead and watchet, watchet has a lovely mariner that people were fishing and crabbing at, very pretty little village. Would also recommend a drive to cheddar, also very beautiful.
Thank you for a great stay.
