“Superb and sublime dining”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2013

I recently had to take my son back to University in Exeter and stopped on the way to have lunch and chose the Farthings for its proximity to the M5 and relaxing surroundings.
I was delighted to be welcomed by the owner who proceeded to advise me personally on the choice of wine to go with my main course.
The starter was almost too perfect to describe. The main was a succulent roast chicken - simple perhaps - but the best I have ever tasted served with new potatoes and a Greek-style salad flavoured with home-grown Mediterranean herbs. The English wine was the perfect accompaniment and all in all was a magnificent way to take a break.

Returned to Farthings for a third time. As previously the service was charming, room comfortable and food excellent. We had the Bay room which is comfortable though has the unusual feature of being connected to its own en suite via a spiral staircase. A bit of a pain when you want to fill the kettle or dog bowl or even go for a pee in the night. However compensation is that it's big with an armchair and sofa in the bay window. Dinner was nicely balanced with some light options as well as the richer dishes. My scallops were great as was the rack of lamb. Portions were well controlled so you can manage a pud and get up from the table feeling full but not stuffed. The cooked breakfast was also excellent with good home cured bacon, a good sausage and a perfect poached egg. Overall it's hard to see what else you could ask for.

Room Tip: Avoid Bay if you're not good with spiral staircases

My elderly mother and I have just stayed at Farthings Hotel for our 35th visit. During the 6 years that we have visiting, the service, under the leadership of owner John, has been consistently outstanding. Recently, the dietary requirements of my mother, now 96 years of age, have become more special, but Chef and John never tire of catering for her every requirement.
If you are fond of animals, as my mother especially is, then the two resident dogs are a delight, both being very well behaved and enjoy the company of guests and the other resident animals in the garden – Peafowl, Guinea Fowl, Geese, Ducks, Chickens etc., which provide many of the fresh items for the table.
A truly wonderful place to stay, that we can thoroughly recommend.

Room Tip: If you plan to spend any time here, then Maple Cottage is excellent. Level access for disabled and a...

Myself and friends ate out in the Farthings as its a mid way point for us all, the hotel is a little off the beaten track so to speak but easy to find. The service was top class, and the restaurant very welcoming with a log fire to add to the charm. The food was of a high quality and a good choice of items on the menu, we noted that it was all local, with some items being home reared and produced on site. we though it was of a good value when you add this in to the mix. Only bug bare was why go to all the trouble of having such a high end menu you give out shop brought bread? but all in all its an easy 5* rating. will be back.

So many thanks for your kind words. So pleased you liked the Farthings and the ambience. Chef was delighted to hear your comments on the food but does wish to reassure you that the bread served with luncheon and dinner is home made daily. Perhaps we will try a parmesan and sun dried tomato bread next time to highlight the difference?

Hope to see you again soon.

Best wishes

We stayed early April while the last of the work was carried out on our house and the Farthings is fairly close and we had been hearing very good things about his hotel. It seemed fairly well priced for the style of hotel and we did manage to get an upgrade to a fantastic master room for little more than we said we would for a guest. The staff were very attentive but in a very relaxed manner which myself and wife would rather than being to stuffy. The public areas were very welcoming and log fires in every room really warmed up a cold April night.

Menu had a good choice of items for the three courses, although we did notice a lack of veggie food? Luckly this was not a problem for us. The home smoked meats were really great and well presented as was my wifes salmon, Rack of lamb was local and even stated the farm on the menu so you know its not horse Im guessing?! "Dauph" Potatoes (sorry cant spell it) really set the lamb off and the garlic jus with rosemary just finished it. We were recommended to have the home made ice cream for a sweet and this was very good indeed, my wife being an expert on ice cream!! only gripe about the food was the price of the dessert lovely as it was £7 for ice cream is too much.

Breakfast was very good although no fresh fruit i.e Grapefruit was a little disappointing however home cured fish was stunning.

Only complaint about it all was that as good as the young man serving us was that in the morning he clearly stuggled to give you the time you wanted, running off to see people out, taking orders, tea/coffee, bringing food, answering phones, myself and wifed joked he has going to have a break down!

Maybe two in the mornings would be an idea.

But dont let it put you off as its a really lovely hotel with good food and service. Im just Very fussy.

Dear Marc

Firstly I would like to thank you for your kind words about our hotel, myself and our team strive to ensure everyone has a very relaxing and enjoyable stay with us.

I have to our chef with regard to the lack of vegetarian food and he reminds me that we do ask every guest if they do require any special dietary requirements to ensure that they have several choices of dishes and aren't limited as if they would be if we had the one choice on our menu.

Kind Regards

Shaun

My family and I attended the recent "fun fair" on Easeter sunday at the Farthings Hotel and I must say what a smashing time we had. It was free to enter and also had a free egg hunt and bits for the kids, there were a few fair rides, stall and craft stalls but all very well priced for families on a budget. We ate in the restaurant it was simple food as you would expect for this type of event but the value was fantastic as all main course were around the £8 mark. The kids loved all the animals running around the grounds the peacocks were really super. I would like to just say a big thank you to the owner and all the staff for putting on this day and how nice it is to see what is clearly a very up market and classy hotel reaching out to the community in such a way. We will be coming back to eat in the restaurant for our wedding anniversary next month and will be telling everyone we know about this gem. Again many thanks.

We spent two nights here whilst touring the area in early March 2013 and found this hotel more by chance through Google maps. Reports, including Trip Advisor seemed sound enough and although not cheap it looked nice and so we gave it a go. To be honest the experience was a bit mixed. In terms of room and accommodation/hotel generally, no major complaints and no real wows - comfortable, clean and reasonably stylish, most of the rooms looked quite nice as was ours - up in the gods and up some fairly steep stairs. They have a habit of leaving unoccupied rooms open, so we had a peek in a few and they all looked quite smart in an English country hotel sort of way, not too much retirement home chintz, which seems to blight so many private hotels in the UK and all comfortable. 1st floor rooms at the front have little balconies. The rooms all seemed quite spacious. The main criticism of the room though was that it was a cold day and despite our asking they did not switch on the heating although they said they did - either the heating was not working or someone was telling porkies - we had to rely on a little blow heater in the room, if it had been colder it would have been quite uncomfortable. The hotel is in a small and pretty village and is quiet at night. Log fire in the reception/sitting room was a nice welcome (when they remember to add logs) but not much reception or sitting space overall.

However the main gripe was the food. Not that it was bad - it wasn't. But it simply did not justify the London or Michelin Star prices - it was way too expensive for the quality of cooking and presentation. The first night was just plain average amateur - with massively over chillied fish, the second night was pleasant - lamb chops, long beans - but whilst nice, it was just competent and simple and did not merit the ambitious price asked. Breakfast was expensive and amateurishly managed - DIY toast in a single small toaster - if busy - don't expect toast for breakfast! There was a lack of fresh fruit - just varieties of cooked breakfast really, nice enough but not good enough for the price.

Overal, nice location, quiet, pleasant English country hotel, service OK, but breakfast service wonky, food at dinner just not good enough to justify the prices. Please note that Google maps shows Farthings as a nearby pub/hotel in the village - this is the wrong one and isn't Farthings.

Room Tip: They are all fine, pleastant and clean as far as I can see. The location is quiet for no sleep issu...
