Booked an overnight stay for a client meeting which we wanted away from the usual Travellodge horrors. What a find! Genuinely helpful staff - fab rooms and lovely informal atmosphere. Good food and wine. And all run by a Scottie dog! Great value for money.

Hello. Actually I'm a West Highland Terrier, not a Scottie. Similar I know. Anyway, I don;t run the place, I just own it. !!!!! I'm pleased you enjoyed your visit, we hope we will see you again soon and if you are passing, please do remember to bring me a bone.

Best wishes

We decided that on our way to Cornwall we'd break up the journey with a nights stay at the Farthings Country House Hotel. We easily found the hotel located in a small pretty village and opposite the village hall and playing fields not far from the A303. The peace and quiet was evident as we arrived and parked the car in an ample sized car park to the front and side of the hotel.

We had booked a nights stay in one of the Master bedrooms that included breakfast and dinner. Check-in was soon done and we were helped with our bags to the Garden Room. On our way it was pointed out where things were including the fridge on the landing that housed fresh milk and things to use as we wish.

The room was plentiful in size and had a suitably sized bed to match (which was very comfy). There were the usual amenities of tea / coffee with a couple of packs of welcoming biscuits, which helped stave off hunger until dinner that was booked for 8pm. The bathroom was very big indeed and had a powerful shower over the bath. Nice individual furniture was in the room and throughout the hotel, which gave it the feel like we were staying with friends and not a hotel.

The Garden Room as you would expect overlooked the garden and offered a slight glimpse out across the village playing field; it was light and airy with large windows and deep sills to add to the feeling of space. Outside hung Wisteria partially covering windows which really gave it the garden feel (a collared dove also enjoyed his position in the wisteria and liked to make himself heard!!!). The only downside about the room was that it was located over the room where breakfast was served and at 7.30am we were woken by music being played (though I have to say when we got down to breakfast it didn't seem overly loud so it must be down to the location of the speakers that made the base sounds travel up into the room so much - not great if your hoping to have a lie in......more on the music later!!!)

We ventured out and had a walk around the beautifully planted gardens and walked briefly up the 'village road' to see the area, all of which were suitably pleasant.

Dinner at 8.00 started with pre-drinks in the bar area, which is located on the ground floor just off from the main entrance. A nice enough area with background music playing to keep one amused. Drinks were priced as one comes to expect nowadays. We were offered the menu and made our choices before being shown to our table and as we hadn't yet finished our drinks these were brought with us into the dining room. Which is where our first issue with the Farthings happened....on being seated at the table the wine glasses were immediately whisked away without any chance to order from the wine list (rather odd as I thought hotels made some good money on a decent bottle), that said we had had a drink in the room before going down to dinner and as we were driving the next day decided not to have wine; even so odd not to be offered.

The meal was divine and I can heartily recommend the pork Farthings gets from their local butcher; without doubt one of the most flavourful cuts I've ever had! Service was reasonably good, though why we were shown to our table then had a 15 minute wait before being served was a little unusual. The menu is based around home grown and local sourced products and offered a wide choice.

In the dining room music was in the form of Robbie Williams / crooners played on what seemed a rather short loop as I'm sure we heard the same tracks more than twice during our meal.

The nights sleep was restful and though the hotel is located on the road running through the village we were not disturbed too much by traffic (though the dove had other ideas as dawn!).

Breakfast again was good and here is our real main gripe.....the same loop of music was playing yet again. Don't get me wrong Robbie Williams / Frank Sinatra et al all produced some great music but there's only so many times you can put up with it! Service was also slightly lacking - on having our full English breakfast delivered to the table we asked for some ketchup and it took another request for ketchup before it arrived, by which time over half of my slowly eaten breakfast had already been consumed. A note about the cooked breakfast - once again the kitchen staff produced a good tasteful meal to get the day off to a good start.

We left the hotel, waving goodbye to the dove on the way and considered our stay was nice and could have been better had a few things not been an issue:

Wine with dinner - the list said they had some but did they really????
Music - if I'd of known I could have offered some of my top 40 cassettes I'd taped off the radio a few years ago!
Service - (condiments) the waitress said they had some but did they have to wait for the tomatoes to grow before being able to serve????

Dear Sir,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to not only write your review but also for your kind words in regards to the hotel and the food. We strive to ensure all our guests are pampered and enjoy all the elements of there stay.

In regards to the wine glasses being taken, this was due to the fact you weren't drinking wine of course if you wanted to switch drinks we would have been more than happy to replace them.

Lastly in response to the Marc our Resturant managers music choices, I can tell you John has taken him outside and given him a good thrashing and told him to put more of a selection on.

We look forward to seeing you again

Regards

Shaun

On our way to visit someone in Hospital in Taunton, stopped at Farthings for lunch. Only sandwiches available, but what sandwiches. My BLT warm and made with generous amount of thick cut bacon "just like what we used to cure at home when I was a boy" Wife's smoked salmon sandwich, excellent quality salmon and huge quantity.
Our little dog was totally relaxed with the three resident dogs and the various fowls wandering around.
Returned later for the night. Our room named Walnut, which is I believe one of the highest standard rooms. Room rate £99. Out at the back of the building, outside access, facing the lawn. Ideal for the dog. A little more care clearing up the guinea fowl and peacock poo on the path would make expeditions to the restaurant easier. Very comfortable bed. Well equipped bathroom with good shower as well as bath. No razor socket.
Our dinner was excellent. Again all very special local ingredients and not a huge choice since everything is absolutely freshly prepared. My wife liked the idea of pan seared mullet, which was listed amongst starters and staff made no hesitation in having this prepared as a full sized "Main"
Breakfast all freshly prepared, lovely sausage and once again That Bacon!
Good service and attentive staff.
Bill moderately expensive but well worth while for the quality of the stay.

We stopped by for afternoon tea and after a very baffling conversation about which deals could be used in connection with which menus, we ended up having afternoon tea.

£30 for sandwiches, cakes and a drink each was a bit steep. And I have never seen a scone so small.

Don't believe the hype - this is an expensive rip-off. Why not provide value for money, Farthings?

Firstly I would like to say how sorry we are that you didn't enjoy your time with us at the Farthings, we strive to ensure all our guests leave having had a fantastic experience that they believe is not only of the highest quality but also great value for money.

I've added a photo of a standard afternoon tea to our tripadvisor page to give everyone an idea of what they can expect when coming to us. As you can see each person having an afternoon tea will get a round of sandwiches with a choice of fillings including Scottish smoked salmon, and egg from our own flock of chickens, home made cake, pastries, and scones with home made jams and the finest clotted cream as well as fresh brewed 'Mills' tea with Chocolate brownie all served in either our stunning grounds or our relaxing lounge area.

It's also my understanding you both had a glass of Pimms with fresh fruit, all for only £15 per person? Seems to be very good value for money.

Kindest regards

Shaun

We used a groupon voucher to stay here and after reading some of the reviews were a little worried as some were not too favourable. However,we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is in a lovely quiet setting and the building itself is pretty and interesting. Our room was beautiful, although we were at front of hotel ,the was no road noise and we sat on the veranda after eating in a wonderful pub a few miles away(the bell at curry mallet) and enjoyed a glass of wine. The room was spotless, all the staff we spoke to were friendly. We will definitely look out for a deal here again but this time we will also eat in the restaurant. Totally loved this place.

If you are the type of traveller that likes the "premier inn" style then this is not for you. However if you appreciate the quirkiness of an old building then you wont go wrong here.

Beautiful little place, can imagine it would be a lovely place to stay.
We sat in delightful gardens with peacocks wandering around & a cute little dog. Very relaxing in the sunshine.
Inside looked like it would be very cosy in winter with sofas, open fire etc.
We had a Groupon voucher for afternoon tea so paid £14 instead of the usual £28 for two people.
I must admit I was expecting a rather special afternoon tea ... The big china pot of tea was great, egg mayo in sandwiches was delicious & salmon good too but kinda hoped for nicer bread and some garnish.
Scones seemed shop bought and a bit dry - which was a shame as homemade scones are so much nicer. Lovely clotted cream and jam.
Rather yummy apricot puff pastry swirl things that were served warm.
Pleasant lads serving.
So - shame about dry scones but delicious apricot pastry and delightful surroundings made up for them :)

We travel quite a lot in the UK . We don't expect a lot , just a warm greeting , a clean room and food that is worth eating.

Sometimes this can be too much for some, and we leave wondering why those involved ever thought of entertaining guests as a profession.

As per usual we took up a voucher offer from a well known website and set off for one night at the Farthings as an overnight on our way even further west. We entered the hotel car park after a rather stressful trip down the M5. Even though we were a few minutes from the Taunton Junction we were in rural bliss .

Immediately obvious were the well cared for grounds and an excellently presented frontage.

OK , what about the welcome. We were met by Marc who was warm , humorous and very professional. This persona was maintained throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble . None of the "oh you're on a voucher offer" second class status here. In fact all of the staff we met were warm and efficient.

The Hotel was an excellent example of a country hotel. Very clean and Tidy , very comfortable and our room was everything we could have wished for. The garden was a joy, peacocks and guinea fowl wandering, Geese and Ducks in enclosures and it was a great place to take a good local real ale before Dinner.

The Hotel has a self sustainability plan and the Ducks,Geese and chickens are reared and after a good life become part of the menu. The kitchen grows its own vegetables, herbs and salad. I had the speciality three bird roast and it was really good. My wife had a steak that came perfect to her "no red but not overcooked "request.

I was so impressed that next day I upgraded from continental to full English breakfast and it was very good too.

We compile our own private list of top hotels we have stayed in and although we keep this to ourselves usually , I can say that the Farthings is the new number one. Excellent job to all there, it was a pleasure to stay and we will be back.

Room Tip: Just book with confidence ,all the rooms looked good.
