We had booked a table for a specific time. No one was there to seat us so we sat at a two person table. Some time afterwards the owner appeared and told us we shouldn't have sat down, claimed that individaul tables were reserved (no such procedure had been mentioned to us when we booked) and instructed us to wait in the bar until we were called. If the hotel had not been located in a small village with no other eating places we would have cancelled the booking. There was no earthly reason why the guests could not be accommodated at the table at the time they had booked. The tables were set and we could only assume that our preemptory ejection by the owner was some sort of pretentious nonsense.

On arrival we had been told that the hotel had a wifi connection. We were given a password and charged £5. After several attempts it was clear that the password did not work, nor could we obtain a mobile broadband connection. On enquiry hotel staff admitted that it did not always work and although they refunded our money it would have been better if they had been honest from the outset.

On the plus side the room was spacious and comfortable, the location quiet and peaceful and the food was good. The garden was lovely, there were nice touches like the tangerines in the 'fridge and the hotel was clean.

Plusses - wonderful quiet and picturesque setting, beautiful garden, super rooms (we paid for an upgraded room), well prepared and presented food that's not too fussy, lovely relaxed atmosphere

Needs work - lacking active management, meaning service is patchy. At well over £200 for one night, it should be better. Dinner service was haphazard (wrong cutlery, forgotten bread and feeling that we'd been 'forgotten' at times - ie empty glasses, no offer of another drink etc) and breakfast was much worse. Chef turned up late (hadn't arrived at 8.30am, meaning big backlog of orders when he did), several things we and others asked for took an age to arrive (milk, coffee, ketchup etc) . Young staff are willing and friendly, but someone more senior needs to be there to supervise and deal with issues. It was like dining in a catering college

Prices are reasonable for good a country house hotel but until the service improves they won't be able to justify them. Search around on the net for cheaper deals at this place - there are plenty

Travelled on a Sunday - owners very accommodating as restaurant normally closes at 7:00pm on a Sunday and they offered to keep it open a bit later, and/or provide alternatives. In the end, I made it for dinner - and very pleased too as the food is excellent.
Stayed two nights - one of the most peaceful hotels I have stayed in. Great room - asked for a quiet room with a desk to work in, and got a huge room with a great bed, two settees, huge wardrobes, large TV with freeview and a great en suite with a good shower. Couldn't have asked for better. It was located at the top of a narrow set of stairs, so if you have mobility problems it isn't the room for you.
Food is very good. Dinner each night was excellent, as was breakfast. There are comfortable sitting areas for a drink before dinner, adjacent to aan open fire.
I found this to be a comfortable, good quality hotel with an excellent location.

I stayed one night in the Farthings whilst on business, having become bored with chain lodges. What an experience! I’d almost forgotten how good a small country hotel can be. The polite, friendly staff did everything they could to make my stay comfortable and pleasant. The room (called Fern) was quite large enough, with a fabulously comfortable bed (soft mattress topper, soft voluminous duvet, 4 real feather pillows) although some may find the bed too soft and despite being at the front was very quiet and had a full-width balcony with a little table and two chairs looking across to a large expanse of green. Black-out drapes as well as curtains. But this was not a ‘master’ bedroom – Vanessa the receptionist told me they are similar but (even) larger. Adequate bathroom with a thermostatic shower over the bathtub but the water pressure’s not brilliant. Plenty of good towels and toiletries. Tea and coffee tray in the room with FairTrade coffee sachets. TV, DVD player, two wicker side chairs, Tiffany bedside lamps, desk, what more could you expect?

Nice touch on the landing is a Smeg fridge with free fresh milk and bottled waters. Downstairs is all comfy welcoming country house style with a small but adequate bar, a lounge (both with real fires in winter) and dining room. I didn’t eat in as I’d eaten lunchtime so can’t comment, although it’s not cheap so it needs to be very good. It probably is.

Lovely gardens outside with free-roaming chickens so fresh eggs for breakfast! Simple buffet table (no pastries but great home-made muesli, other cereals, fruit, toast, juices etc) and cooked food to order, piping hot. I suggested constructively that the chef added less black pepper to the food, which brought a polite and unexpected apology.

Any niggles? The Wi-Fi internet system does not work in all rooms, due to the thickness of the walls (apparently), but I was offered use of the breakfast room during the evening.

Summary – great for both business and pleasure if you like calm tranquillity and old-fashioned values of quality and service.

Having read some of the other reviews on the website we were perhaps expecting too much, especially as we got a discounted sunday rate. The hotel is a very attractive house pleasantly decorated and furnished and with a cosy bar with a glowing fire. We were then disappointed and not a little surprised when we returned from town at about 9.30 pm hoping for a nightcap and the rest of the evening in front of the fire to find all the lights out, the bar closed and locked, and not a member of staff in sight. When we checked in earlier there had been no mention of a compulsory early night for all! Our room, Fern, was furnished in "B&Q pine",was reasonably comfortable and warm and the bathroom fine, except for lack of pressure on the shower.. Nice duvet and plump pillows but dreadful mattress and the legs on the dressing table stool were wobbly. The following morning we opted for the continental breakfast (£8 extra) and were surprised by the lack of choice and quality, particularly as this is a hotel which claims to be a gastronomic venue! In our time there we only saw two young staff, who, whilst being perfectly pleasant, were very young and inexperienced. Maybe you only get the full service when you pay the full price? This hotel pretends to be something it is not. For our stay it was little more or less than a B&B

Old fashioned service is indeed still alive and kicking and resides at the Farthings.

I was welcomed like a long lost friend, the kitchen stayed open for me and produced the best sea bass I can remember eating, the room was clean, comfortable and well appointed and breakfast was superb with fresh fruit and juices too.

A perfect if all-too-brief stay, would I stay again, yes certainly.

Thanks guys and well done!

Farthings is a small, rather intimate hotel in a sleepy village just outside Taunton. It is hard to believe you are 5 minutes from the motorway. It has the personal feel of the best B&B whilst having the food and accomodation of a top class hotel. Staff are unfailingly helpful and the food - all of which is locally sourced/bred/shot is delicious. The eggs come from the hens that are wandering around on the lawn at the back and the local butcher and farmers get credit for individual dishes on the menu.

The only point to mention is that a cooked breakfast is not available until 8.00am although there is an extensive continental buffet available earlier. Travellers aiming for an early start just need to be aware.

The accomodation is clean, well decorated and comfortable. I would hope to return for a more leisurely stay. You could really unwind there.
