We booked a last-minute stay for my husband and I and our 2 dogs. The room was excellent - pretty, clean and very comfortable. Lots of room - a king sized bed, 2 seater sofa, lovely antique furniture and views over the rear garden.
Meals, beer and wine were superb and service was excellent. As we had dogs with us, we ate in the bar area and not the dining room. This was not a bar like in a pub but a separate little reception room that happened to have a bar in it. We had individual and very attentive but unintrusive service.
Two flocks of ducks live in the rear garden. A flock of Khaki Campbells and a flock of Aylesburies. The menu - especially the breakfast menu - featured duck eggs in profusion. We woke to quacking in the morning which the dogs thought very interesting.
Due to the presence of the ducks we had to keep the dogs on leads in the garden.
There is a village green directly opposite The Farthings, with a children's playground. This area is "dogs on leads" only but a footpath leads off the far side of the green through fields which gave the dogs somewhere to run.
We will definitely visit again.
Flat access to entrance and dining room but we don't know about access to bedrooms.

Room Tip: Beech was excellent. The Garden Room looked nice, too.

This is a very nice small hotel with pleasant, welcoming staff and lots to commend it. Our room was clean and comfortable a the place as a whole was attractive. There were a few 'niggles' - loose toilet seat, empty marmalade pot at breakfast and empty croissant tray. The practice of charging for wi-fi access after a certain limit was almost 'quaint' (who does this these days)?! The location is nice and out of the way with the problem that there are few places within easy reach to eat in the evenings - traipsing into Taunton was a bit of a drag. The food served at the hotel in evening 'tried too hard' - for the price it should have been better - the steak au poivre I had had very little to do with steak au poivre - it certainly lacked pepper, being flamed in brandy and then cream added. It was actually served with a mushroom and red wine reduction (I think identical to the red wine reduction served with my sea bass the evening before which came on a bed of very 'crunchy' vegetables). The steak itself was tasty but rendered inedible by virtue of being as tough as an old boot. The elderly gentleman at the table next to us the evening before had left is venison for the same reason. Maybe a case for reviewing meat suppliers? My wife fared better
with the Brill one evening and the Moroccan Chicken the next. Overall a bit of a disappointment.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and I'm very sorry to hear you didn't totally enjoy your time with us, we take any criticism very seriously as we do always strive to become better. The menu is changed daily so some times there is the very rare event when the chefs do make a mistake putting the wrong sauce on etc but I would like to stress this is few and far between. We do use the very best butchers in the area using only local produce but I have put your concerns to them. In regards to breakfast we only cook a few croissants at a time but you had only need to ask and it dose say on the menu we will more than happily cook more and obviously replace any sauces or jams that need doing so. That being said I'm pleased your wife enjoyed her food and I hope you enjoyed our complementary desserts as a way of apolgy.

Kind regards

Shaun

We had chosen Farthings as it accommodates a dog and we had not before spent time in the area. Booking was easy and I explained that we would be travelling from Margate in Kent late afternoon on the Sunday but expected to arrive in time for dinner. We were told that should we run late and miss dinner service then they would provide supper. True hospitality. In the event we arrived just prior to the end of service and ordered food immediately. We ate in the small bar as we had our dog but this was no hardship and both the food and service were excellent, as was the local beer. Our room was very comfortable with plenty of space. It had an unusual steep spiral staircase to the bathroom - something to bear in mind if too much time was spent in the bar! The location was great, offered some enjoyable country walks and easy access to Taunton (although getting onto the A358 was a challenge at busy times). We explored as much of the area as time permitted and enjoyed a day out on the West Somerset Railway. The Quantock Brewery is close to the railway station at Bishops Lidyeard and a visit was a must to bring home a selection of their ales. Overall a most enjoyable stay and one we hope to repeat in the future/

Room Tip: Our room on first floor was certainly spacious with plenty of natural light

We stayed for just one night en route to the Isles of Scilly. Only ten minutes from the motorway and in a rural setting. Our (premium) room was very comfortable and very well furnished and equipped. This particular room was fun and somewhat idiosyncratic in having the en suite bathroom above via a spiral staircase so not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. A nice evening meal and breakfast included in the price. We would happily stay there again. Our only constructive criticism would be to suggest culling the "musak" in the dining rook which was occasionally intrusive, particularly at breakfast, and not needed when there is enough people dining to provide the atmosphere.

We stayed here a week ago on a trip to Cornwall for 1 night
Nice quiet location we had a superior room at £175 which included breakfast maybe a little bit pricey for the area but nice and ok as we had a
Very spacious room with large bed and bathroom which was very clean - Beautiful old building and decorated gracefully though old fashioned , we dined and had a lovely meal and service too, breakfast was nice but we were the only two so felt soul- less but adequate - we may return ?!!
