“Amazing experience”
Reviewed 25 March 2013

Living in Taunton, we wanted somewhere special to celebrate my 60th birthday, my wife found out about the Castle Hotel private dining experience, which is a private dining room in the penthouse of the hotel. It has a lovely dining area seating up to 14 people for dinner etc, with a relaxing lounge area. There were 12 of us, nine adults and three grand children.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but was very impressed with the standard of service, food and surroundings. The manager in charge of serving us (Rui) was excellent and very welcoming on our arrival, serving the champagne we had ordered as we relaxed before dinner. There was a fantastic terrace overlooking the town with some great views and had it been warmer we would have spent more time out on it.

The food was superb and everyone had a great time. I thoroughly recommend this venue for a special meal with a small group of family, friends or even business meetings.

We will certainly be using the facility again.

Stayed here for one night on a weekend break

Room was large, clean & very comfortable, although a little hot at night (but aren't all hotels!?)

As per previous reviews furniture was a little old, scruffy here & there but nothing shabby or dirty so not a problem.

We were in a corner room, overlooking the high street on a Friday night but only once did I hear anything from the street below

Room had lovely towels, 1 robe (one, bit odd?) toiletries, tea & coffee, comp. biscuits, ironing board, hairdryer, TV (but we couldn’t get BBC1 on & watch the 6 nations final - ah, no problem we went out to watch it :-)

Staff we're polite, all saying ‘hello’, ‘good evening’ etc as we passed on stairs etc

We had dinner in Brazz which was good food, decent portions, but perhaps not quite worth its price tag - have eaten in better restaurants either worth the money or for less but a pleasant, enjoyable meal

Breakfast was very good - lovely food, all local, fresh and good quality (decent sausages, free range eggs) - choice of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns, toast, tea/coffee, jams/honey etc, cereals, juices, fresh fruit salad, yogurts - to order was different eggs, kippers, porridge

Hotel has a car park - not huge but was OK for us, could see it being full in peak season

Fantastic stay away in a beautiful hotel, in a lovely city, great staff, decent food, comfy sleep

I didn't rate value as we won this night away in a competition!!

Stayed here 3 nights on business. Got a single room but it was much larger than you normally get for a single. Clean and comfortable. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is slightly dated bathroom and furniture.

Ate at Brass and restaurant and had breakfast. Excellent food and service in all three. Staff service impeccable. Inventive food, great presentation.

All staff friendly and know their service area well.

Would come back here for pleasure and am delighted to have had such a good business stay.

My girl friend and I had the pleasure of staying here on Friday 8th March 2013. I do have to admit that this was a review meal and paid for by the publication she works for. The hotel was also inevitably expecting us.
That aside though the welcome we recieved was just what you'd expect in a establishment like this. Big smile, welcoming, friendly and proffessional. The receptionist was quick efficient and couldn't have been more helpful. We both thought this was going to be a good start.
The Castle hotel really is the only place to stay in Taunton if you are wanting more than a travel lodge/ Inn or B&B. It is centrally located and only a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. For visiting Taunton and the surrounding countryside it is very well located and has a carpark too.
We were staying in room 21, aka the Mendip suite. The room was clean, light and large. To be honest I've never seen a larger bed!! I liked the dimmer switch in the bathroom as well as the amount of white clean towels.
The room was decorated in a traditional, comfortable attire and anything else would have looked out of place. The hotel is an beautiful old building with a real character and an interesting history.
We met the general manager and he was a friendly welcoming gentleman who was passionate about the hotel and things he had changed. To be honest every single member of staff we came across was always very helpful and friendly. No stuffiness here at all.
If you're a foodie then the food here is something you really must try. Gary Rhodes and Phill Vickery, no not the rugby player have all been head chefs here so it gives you an idea of the standards set.
Brazz is a fun, friendly brasserie that serves good food in a relaxed environment. We were however here to sample the wonderful food on offer at the Castle Bow restaurant.
Food and service is top notch. I'm from a hotel management back ground and enjoyed how the staff presented menus and dishes. It wasn't too formal but also certainly not a place you'd stroll up in sports gear.
The food was impeccable and the wine menu was also very impressive too.

This hotel may not be everyones cup of tea but I would certainly go back. The food was very tasty and visually top class. The bedrooms and communal areas were very cosy and comfortable. The place has an impressive feel about it as soon as you walk through the front revolving door.
highly recommend

We enjoyed a delicious sunday lunch recently. Superb service. 'Sunday roast sirloin beef' carved from the beautiful trolley, accompanied by colourful vegetables AND superb wine.
Pudding was chef's delight, poached pear with ginger slice and butterscotch sauce....yummy.
It was a most delightful experience following the concert of beautiful music of Mozart and Schubert played be The Wihan Quartet.

We stayed here so we could attend a friends Civil Partnership. We had a lovely room which was very well appointed, with a view over the Square. The bar was well stocked but a bit pricey- Cocktails were not particularly well made. Beautiful breakfast made up for that though!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Square are not noisy as you might expect

Brilliant meal for a family double celebration - parents anniversary & father-in-laws birthday. We all enjoyed the experience, starters, main course, deserts & cheese were outstanding - we tried most. The Service was attentive but not overpowering. Highly recommended.
