“A Town Centre Delight”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

Our room was nothing short of glorious, airy, light, and with views across the gardens.
The hotel is positioned in the town centre with ample parking which made everything so straightforward when we arrived. Service within the hotel was okay. but did not match the level such a wonderful building warranted, but it was a very very hot day so can be excused.

We just wanted to share with you how accommodating and helpful the staff here are, both the wedding planners were brilliant nothing was to much. The hotel is set in lovely grounds in particular the gardens which made a great backdrop on a sunny day. Thank you!

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions in recent years and have always been impressed with the staff's attentiveness and on more than one occasion upgraded to a very comfortable suite.
However, on our last visit in June, it appeared management has changed. Staff were less friendly, and the Braz service was very disappointing. There appeared to be only 3 or 4 servers for a full restaurant and no supervisor. It took 50 minutes to receive the starter. Lunch the following day was much more pleasant mainly because one of the servers recognized us from the previous evening and knew we were not happy. Don't understand why the dining room has such limited hours.
From our experience at other hotels in rural England we felt it was overpriced for the services provided.
Will think twice about staying there again but may be difficult to find an alternative hotel of the same style within a reasonable distance of the town.

I last entered the Castle over 50 years ago, it was then the haunt of wealthy farmers and land owners( County set) and successful lawyers. Now she is rather tired and frayed round the edges(especially the stair carpets). The entrance is rather cluttered and, apart from the bar and the grill and brasserie, needs modernising and some redecoration. My room needed this badly with marked walls. The bathroom had chipped tiles above the mirror. The bars and grill and brasserie were very similar to what you would find on Broadway around 75th West. A bit unexpected in an establishment of this age. It must be very difficult to keep an Hotel of this age and a listed building functioning profitably. It was clean downstairs as was my room. The staff were pleasant and professional particularly in the brasserie though the barman was absent so long I had to go to reception to ask for service. The food was not expensive and was tasty though my pork chop one evening was so tough that I had to have a stake knife to cut it. This was clearly not the kitchens fault but the supplier. This was not charged for on my bill. It really is not a 4* hotel any more.

We stayed one night at The Castle. Staff friendly , good size rooms however some street noise until late in the evening. Had a really nice dinner in the restaurant and one of the best breakfasts we have had during our travels in the UK. Would recommend but ask for a quiet room.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room as we had quite a bit of noise overlooking the car park.

I stayed at this hotel overnight on a business trip, I must say its the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in. The reception staff were helpful and polite, as was the Brazz staff. The only downside is the location on a Saturday night, it was very noisy!! So if you find it hard to sleep without silence ask for a quiet room away from the side of hotel. Beds were very comfortable and bathrooms were well equipt and super shower.. I had Breakfast in the Brazz which was adequate and very nice with a good choice if hot and cold options, prices were average. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to be in the centre of all action in Taunton. Excellent.
