The Castle at Taunton

I had always wanted to stay at the Castle as I had heard good things but my expectation of another George at Stamford weren't met....£150 a week-end night including breakfast should buy more than a small double bed in a 3* room with a forgettable breakfast. Even the good service couldn't compensate for the disappointment.

What a shame the castle thinks it is a luxury hotel. We experienced gaffs at the front desk, a rude night porter, tired bathroom, unexiting toletries, trully awful breakfast buffet experience, lack of attention to detail (it was our wedding night). I would have been so gutted if I had expected anything else but being from Taunton I knew it was a joke of a place and almost quite enjoyed the Fawlty Towers rudeness and incompetence of the staff and the english faded feel. Expensive joke though, shame they don't use the astromonical room rates to hire decent staff and for a badly needed refurb.

It's not cheap, but it's an excellent location for a special location. The outside of the hotel looks spectacular, and the staff were very friendly. It's well placed for the city centre, but inside feels like you are in the country. The room was pleasant and clean. We had dinner in the main restaurant, which was expensive, but served excellent food and was ideal for a fancy celebration meal. We had a lovely time and will definitely go back again.

Tucked away in the centre of Taunton, with its own castle ruins in the garden and possibly the finest wistaria in the world on its West front, this hotel is as good as they get. Excellent, fairly priced food in both the main restaurant and bistro, good accommodation, and friendly, helpful staff, from the initial greeting by the porter to the boss himself. Taunton and environs have much to offer, but it is worth a visit just to stay at the Castle. And, only half a mile walk from the Somerset ground, no wonder it is sought out by discerning county cricket fans.

I stayed at The Castle for just one night. The experience was quite positive.
I stayd at one for the Garden Rooms which was spacious with a local decoration including porcelains and nice furniture. This is of course an old hotel, so some details are a little oldish and worn, but this is anyway what you expect from a hotel named "The Castle".
The location is perfect right next to the town commercial center.
The bar at the lobby is small, not a luxurious place, but cosy and warm. There is a formal restaurant on the ground floor, which tends to gather older people. But there is also a nice bar, bistrot called the Brazz, which has also an entrance directly from the street, which gathers a lot of young people and you can have something lighter there.
The service is generally nice and polite, but nothing special. No problems though.

I have stayed at The Castle many times and, when in Taunton, it is always my first choice.
Forget the corporate Marriots and Holiday Inns, this place is how hotels should be.
First, it is a remarkable old building (basically a bit of a castle) and it has immediate character and charm and the location is bang in the middle of town.
Second, the staff, they are the best, I have genuinely never met better. They are helpful, friendly and superbly efficient but always, always, polite and respectful. When you check-in, there is none of that hanging about while some management trainee plays tippy-tappy on the keyboard for ages, you just give them your name and the sign-in form is on the desk in five seconds. Within two minutes you've got your key, swift but quietly relaxed and unhurried.
Rooms - no two are the same but all are decorated and furnished in a traditional style in keeping with the hotel, again there's none of that identikit corporate stuff, these are genuinely pleasant and comfortable. Oh, and absolutely spotless.
Food - There's a dining room (I have never used it except for breakfast), an old-style hotel bar and a Brasserie with a good bar. The Brasserie changes its menu frequently and I have eaten there many times and never been disappointed. Breakfast is marvellous, all the usual stuff but all sourced locally and utterly delicious. (Things like the muesli, preserves, bread etc are made in-house).
Little extras like coming back to your room after dinner to find the bedclothes turned down for you, the bathroom tidied again and the coffee and cookies topped up are nice touches.
Negatives? Well, sometimes the deliveries outside can wake you early, the rooms don't have ironing boards (you can get one sent up but that's hassle I don't need), it isn't air conditioned (it's basically a castle) and it does have an ambience of a stately home about it (which you either like or you don't - I do).
I like it, I like it a lot, that's why I keep going back.
