Description: Taj Mahal in Taunton is an excellent and hugely popular Indian restaurant in Somerset. Variously described as great value, brilliant and as one of the best restaurants in Taunton, Taj Mahal is a great place for a memorable meal for locals, tourists and business visitors. It's certainly worth travelling for. Set in some of the west country's most stunning landscapes, Taunton is a lively town with a rich history and plenty to keep visitors entertained. As well as some quaint independent shops and coffee shops, Taunton offers scenic country walks, historic buildings and a thriving pub culture. Taj Mahal is a jewel in this county's crown. The restaurant at Taj Mahal boasts a vibrant atmosphere, with a modern design and a rich, warm colour scheme, which complements the atmosphere and cuisine. The friendly staff are always on hand to ensure diners have a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Taj Mahal specialises in contemporary Indian cuisine that showcases the very best of fresh spices to create tempting dishes for all tastes. The kitchen carefully crafts each dish to offer diners a range of spices and flavours. The extensive menu features plenty of classic Indian dishes, freshly prepared using only the finest ingredients. Start with poppadoms and a tray of chutneys as you browse, before following with a starter of honey lamb chops or sweet and spicy aloo channa chat. Main courses might be king prawn balti, garlic chilli masala or a chef's special chicken papeiaza - chicken tikka cooked with onions and green peppers in a medium spiced sauce. Pop a saag paneer and paratha on the side for a real feast. With a classy ambience, delicious food and courteous staff, Taj Mahal in Taunton certainly lives up to its majestic name.

“Just brilliant”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

Today is our wedding anniversary and we had a very short discussion about where to go for a meal! Should we treat ourselves to something a bit different? We both took all of two minutes to decide to stick with what we love - The Taj Mahal.
We do visit The Taj Mahal Restaurant in Taunton regularly for one very good reason: and that is, that in our opinion, it is the best.
The food is always piping hot (with hot plates) and the traditional curries are just that - exactly what you should be able to expect - traditional.
The specials are just great - they never disappoint.
I could describe all the dishes we love but I could be here for days!
I especially love Tarka Dahl and I always judge a restaurant on this dish - I have not found a better one anywhere (except the one my husband makes at home - of course I have to say that!).
The Wednesday Banquet deal is unbelievably good value for money and the Sunday buffet is varied and piping hot - so good that you do have to pace yourself.
All the staff are helpful and friendly - we could not ask for more - hence we keep returning!
We have tried the trendy places - Blue Mango and Pink Garlic for example, however, we have found these to be a bit bland - trying too hard to be different and forgetting that the basic traditional curries are still what lots of folk like to eat.
The Taj Mahal is busy - but they can always feed more customers - so give it a go.

“Expert cooking and service”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Lightness of the fried food (bhajis), the deft handling of the spices (I recommend the Persian lamb), and very attentive service. A great meal deal on Wednesdays, with starter, side, main and rice for a mere £10. And this is quality food and cooking.

“another enjoyable meal”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We always find the service and food to be more than acceptable, which is why we keep coming back. We chose mainly items that we hadn't tried before, and were not disappointed. We look forward to our next visit.

“Not impressed”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

We thought we would try the lunch special advertised, starter, main and rice or naan.We were the only customers there but had to wait to be seated whilst the waiter was taking a phone call and did not even acknowledge us entering. We were not able to have the naan bread on the menu as were told the tandoori oven needed to be on for an hour first and we had arrived just after 12.It should not then be offered or surely the oven should be put on earlier??? Food was bland, luke warm and very small portions. The tikka masala was far too sweet and mostly just sauce. Then we were subjected to a very loud argument going on in the kitchen.Very disappointing. We will not be returning.
