“Comfortable overnight stay”
Reviewed 1 April 2009

The reviews for this hotel have been a bit mixed but we found it fully met our expectations for a comfortable stopover on our journey. We had a clean comfortable room & bathroom with normal Holiday Inn set up. Check in efficient. Breakfast was fine. Good value with some of the offers on at the moment.

We enjoyed the pool, a good size though only 1.2m deep. Also a hot tub and big gym.

Sunday in UK hotels is a bit of a dismal experience. This was no exception. Few staff around and a sense of gloom. I asked for a quiet room and as the room booked for me was close to the motorway slip road they gave me another. I'd just settled in when a family arrived next door and could be heard through the walls. I got myself moved bacjk to my original room, but since there were only about thirty people staying in a hotel with 100+ rooms, I don't see why we couldn't all have quiet rooms!

The biggest rip-off so far as I'm concerned, was my deli cheese and pickle rustic roll served with a handful of crisps. This ghastly roll wasn't big, had a huge spread of cheap pickle inside and a little grated cheese....and I mean little. Gievn that this must have cost £1 max to produce, I was amazed that Holiday Inn can charge £7.25 for it. Not a single decent ingredient!!!!!!! As for wine, don't pay their extortionate prices, buy a bottle at Costcutter just around the corner. You'll be doing yourself a favour.

Breakfast surprised me for a UK hotel, because it was quite good, recently cooked and well-presented.

Don't think I'll stay again though. Last time I was in Taunton I stayed at Express by Holiday Inn nearby - a much better experience.

Built on a retail / business park amongst offices, a supermarket, bowling alley, cinema, etc. This purely functional hotel is on a major motorway junction with most places in the southwest of England within easy reach.

But, it must rank alongside its low budget cousins as a classless, characterless, almost sterile type of hotel that can be found up and down the length of the country.

The public areas are nicely decorated and comfortable.
The bedrooms are adequately sized and include all the modern conveniences a guest might expect.
The leisure faculties (pool, spa, gym and sauna) are clean, well maintained and very relaxing.
The staff are courteous and go about their duties diligently.

But surely there is more to a break from home than this pre-packaged, mass-produced product. Isn’t it nice to stay somewhere with a little more charm in the décor, a little something different on the dinner menu or a view from your room of trees and a slight glimpse of our lovely countryside. Who cares if the shower drips or the wardrobe door squeaks, surely a small risk to take for individuality.

  • Liked — Close to where we needed to be

Stayed here due to its location being just off the M5. Also wanted to stay somewhere with a pool. Booked a Deluxe room which came with toiletries, slippers, dressing gowns, stocked mini bar, double bed and large sofa bed.

Room was very clean, bathroom was very nice with large deep bath, very clean. Everything worked, bed was very comfy with additional 4 pillows if you needed them.

The health club wasnt anything special, jacuzzi was a bit cold, the pool was chaos as it was kids swimming lessons, while the sauna was lovely and hot.

Had room service in the evening which was very nice and delivered in 30 mins. Waiter forgot an ice bucket and this was delivered within a few minutes. Food is somewhat pricey however as is expected in these places, £18 for a steak, £13 for a burger, cheapest bottle of wine £15. Add £2.50 for room service.

Didnt have breakfast as I was leaving early, but I have to say the hotel was very quiet in the night with no corridor noise. Could not hear the motorway.

Overall a lovely hotel, enjoyed our stay there, though it is on the expensive side for what is, at the end of the day, just a Holiday Inn chain hotel. I would go back there however.

Not bad, a standard chain experience, nothing special however clean, organised with the bits you need. Check-in was a little slow, however the receptionist was having issues with some European guests and their requests. Hotel was quite full with other guests of a sporting nature, but the bar was accessible and there was still plenty of seats. Getting a taxi into Taunton took about 40mins, I'm sure reception booked the slowest Taxi driver, who turned out to be insane. Nothing special, but perfectly functional!

  • Liked — Consistency, knew what I would be getting.
  • Disliked — Lacked that little extra.
