“Lovely weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

We stayed 2 nights on their Dinner, Bed and Breakfast Package which cost £199 per night. Our Deluxe room in the new wing was beautiful and had everything we could we wish for. Dinner was superb as was the service throughout our stay. The whole hotel is beautifully decorated and the lounge area was very comfortable and homely. Only a couple of niggles: the Spa isn't connected to the main hotel building which means that you can't trot over easily in your dressing gown especially when it is raining. Infact, this put us off from visiting it altogether because of the faff involved. Also, although we had a lovely continental breakfast in our room on both days, on the 2nd morning they had run out of croissants which is probably the main component of a continental breakfast !!
However, all in all we had a fantastic weekend and would definitely return.

Thank - you for your comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I am sorry the Spa is detached from the main house however due to planning restrictions in a listed Georgian property we are unable to link them together for the time being. The croissants were popular that day with a number of people and we do cook off more now as a result. However glad that you enjoyed your break with us

Finally got around to dining at the Mount Somerset (we didn't stay as we don't live too far away) and I can't fault the food. It was lovely. It was just the hotel itself - it didn't quite seem to know what it wanted to be. The service was good - the napkin was placed on my lap as I sat down so I thought, great, five star service here we come. But it never arrived! Don't get me wrong, the staff were attentive and polite, but if you're going to do the whole napkin-on-the-lap thing then I would have expected more than one round with the bread basket and there was no sign of a mid-lunch crumb-clearance of the table. When the coffee arrived the cafetiere was just placed on the table. No one poured it. I know this makes me sound like a spoilt brat - I'm not, I'll eat in a greasy spoon no problem at all. It's about expectations. I expected the Mount Somerset to be on a par with the now closed restaurant at The Castle Hotel in Taunton. It wasn't - but it could so easily have been with a few small adjustments. And for a hotel trying to convey a five star attitude, should the drive really be full of gaping potholes?? It's the small things that make the big difference . . .

I stayed for one night . Made very welcome. A group of us had dinner in a private room which was excellent. Good food good wines. Nice bar area for a quiet chat. A well stocked honour bar for those of us that we're talking along after dinner. Large comfortable room and excellent bathroom. Good location with good views and Taunton and surrounding area easily accessible. Comfortable atmosphere. So much better and more homely than staying in a corporate hotel chain.

I stayed here on 22nd February to attend at course being held there the following day. Received a warm welcome. I was very impressed with the decor. My room was in the new wing but beautifully furnished and very well equipped. The bathroom was stunning. Had dinner which was really delicious and great service. My daughter and husband live nearby but had never been for dinner or a stay, this will probably change in the future they were very impressed when they visited me there. I really enjoyed my stay, the food, the service and its just so beautiful.

Room Tip: Langford Suite has 4 poster bed

We booked a Saturday night in the Langport suite to relax after our wedding on the Friday. the Hotel is set in beautiful countryside and looks great as you approach. We received a good welcome from reception who showed us to our room. The views are stunning and from raised 4 poster bed you can see for miles from windows in front and to the right. The decor in the room worked very well and i could not fault it. The bed was luxurious, soft and comfortable. However it was a little drafty and cool with the curtains open.

The Spa was modern and had everything you could need. An excellent jacuzzi complemented by steam, sauna, mist showers, ice-dip etc.

Reception arranged for an ice-bucket to be brought to the room for champagne we had from our wedding, it arrived very promptly.

We had paid for dinner along with the room. On arrival in reception we were shown to the lounge for drinks and canapes, where our order for dinner was taken.

We ordered

DUCK PATE
MOUNT SOMERSET DARK MUSCAVADO, CUMIN & OAK SMOKED SALMON

ROAST RACK OF ENGLISH LAMB (this was unavailable and so we were offered the rump of lamb) - asked to be cooked medium to well done
FILLET OF WEST COUNTRY ABERDEEN ANGUS BLACK - asked to be cooked medium rare

The starters were delicious and beautifully presented, however at no point did a waitress/waiter come to ask if everything was ok. Thats fine as long as it is.

The mains came out and as we started to eat we realised they had confused the cooking instructions. My beautiful fillet was well done and my new wifes lamb was bloody rare, further to this the lamb was very chewey. Unfortunately we did not see a waitress until the mains were almost finished. We had to call her over and she offered to swap them but obviously this was too late. The head waitress came over and said we would not have to pay for the main, they also offered a complementary desert wine. Thats as it should be but being good at apologising is not something to be proud of

The Chocolate fondant and Panacotta for desert were both excellent.

Such simple mistakes compounded by bad service. We were told the lack of attention was becuase they had a large group in a private room, however the dining hall itself was barely a third full. Also the main room lacked atmophere, there was some music playing in another room that drifted through occasionally. No-one likes to hear excuses based on being busy, it shows a lack of preparation. Shame as the food itself was exellent.

All in all a great place to stay, the building inside and out was beautiful. It was only let down by a frustrating dinner experience.

I am sorry that there was some confusion over the orders for the mains at dinner and that it took a while to iron out.

Went to the mount on valentines evening for dinner.

Excellent meal and very reasonably priced.

There was a singer and pianist playing who were very good and added to the evening.

Only slight criticism was the food was served a little too quickly and a gap between courses would have been nice.

But overall a superb evening and will definitely go back.

I used this hotel for a private dinner in December which was very good, guests travelled from all over the Country and all were impressed. Based upon this experience I booked a table for two in their restaurant for their 'Special' Valentines dinner ( £39 per head for a four course dinner excluding wine). Upon arrival we were shown to the lounge where drinks and canapes were served. The canapes (part of the four course dinner) were, frankly, awful - two cheese straws, two bite sized tarts and a few rather tired olives. Our dinner order was taken (the 'Special' menu consisted of two starters, two mains and one pud, or cheese...........) we were requested to place our desert order at the same time. I had to request a wine list which, after some delay, finally arrived. We were subsequently shown to our table which, to my annoyance, was in the (cold ) conservatory and not the main restaurant (despite my booking the main restaurant and paying a 50% deposit in advance. To be fair, when I mentioned this to the waitress we were quickly moved to the (half full) main restaurant.

Our champagne (a bottle of Bollinger) was brought to the table and then deposited in a water jug with some ice at the bottom................................. not, in my view, what you would expect in a so-called fine dining restaurant or, indeed, in any restaurant. The food, whilst reasonably well cooked, consisted of miniscule portions delivered without any break between courses, and with no attention from the restaurant manager. Our champagne remained on the table, no-one re-filled our glasses - that was left to us.

It is a real shame that this lovely hotel is being managed in such a way - fortunately we have a sense of humour and did not let this 'shabby' experience spoil our night. The only high spot was the very good singer and key board player who, frankly, made our night.

Suffice to say that we will not be returning to the Mount Somerset in the near future.
