Apparently. Just shows how individual experiences can vary! We've been going here for some years ( 3 couples) as it is equidistant for an occasional meetup. Good location and nice pub but this week's visit had all the hallmarks of a village pub dumbing down. ... ie Pre-prepped food, inexperienced and forgetful staff, no evidence of owner/manager. Extensive and interesting menu, but that often indicates not much goes on in the kitchen other than heating stuff. Sadly our worst fears were confirmed. Commercial pizza, an incredibly rubbery, shaped beefburger ('Prime beef'- the mouthwatering description on the board. Don't think so.), and seafood medley salad which to my wife's horror turned out to be battered and deepfried despite having quizzed staff when ordering. As we surveyed the table it was obvious that everything had been bought in.
3 conversations with staff about bread but it never arrived, and request for ketchup also fell by the wayside. ' Simple pub language would be good ' Could I get you anything else?' ' Would you like any sauces?' ' How was your meal?' Sorry, but we're moving on!

We visit this place maybe twice a year and it never fails to amaze us how good the food is for a small village country pub. Our waitress who was on her first night at the pub was excellent, the chef who came to the bar was brilliant. The menu is extensive and varied and cooked perfectly in great surroundings.Must go more often.

Dropped in on a midweek evening, lovely warm welcome, actually light the candles on the tables, not just look at them. Fantastic old pub as it should be, lots of original beams and copper pots and old prints, just oozing charm. Food was quickly served, nice and hot and good selection, fish of the day was a Torbay sole...ginormous and tasty with prawn butter, too full up for a pud, but a good selection was offered. Would go again especially in the winter when the open fire would come into its own.

Three of us dined at the pub/restaurant on a Monday evening. The atmosphere was relaxed and the choice of food was surprisingly wide (including items from the lunch menu). We tried scallops and calamari for starters and pork, rump steak and turbot for main courses. Everyone was happy with the quality and amount of food. Several whites and several reds were offered "by the glass" (with an unusually large range of glass sizes). Wine prices were also very reasonable. Friendly staff and an unexpected visit from a traditional dancing troupe.
