“good B&B great breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2013

This is as we expected, a typical quaint English pub offering bed and breakfast.Large car park and terraced area ,nice bar area offering choice of draught ciders.Room as expected with nice comfy bed. Accomadating staff let us use other facilities at no exrta cost and served a nice breakfast for us at 10 am so we had a nice lay in.This is not the Hilton and we are thinking about returning in the summer , the surronding country side is lovely and we would love to ride the steam train nearby. We attended a party nearby so the accomadation served its purpose and we had no complaints

We went to the New Inn on reading, as we always do on Tripadvisor, I think this is the first time that we have been so disappointed. On arrival at the inn everything was closed.
We had to stand in very bad weather, knocking on the door, after sometime a Gentleman put his head out of an upstairs window and asked if we were staying there when we said yes his reply was" Wait we will open the door, we do not open till 5,0 clock", the time was 4.45. We were told on booking the two rooms to get there before 5 '0'clock because they like to book people in before opening time. When a lady came to the door she reiterated that they don't open till 5'0' clock.. We replied with the information that we had received, She did apologize and showed us to our rooms. The rooms were ok but needed some TLC the television was so small we could hardly see the picture as it was almost up to the ceiling.
We had a meal in the inn when I received my meal, which was a steak I could not eat it it was just gristle. The waitress took it away, and came back and said the chef was sorry and offered me a free sweet. I had had no meal so I did not want a sweet so she took the price off the bill of the sweet not what you would have expected
Next morning we were woken at 6.15 by the most terrible noise. When we went down for breakfast we were put in a dark corner. There was no other people in the breakfast area,
we asked for the light to be put on but the waitress said there was no bulbs in the light fittings.
When we went to leave and give our keys in I spoke to the gentleman about the noise that went on. He asked what time this started, when i told him.He said." The people in the next room went early". I told him that we had no sleep after that because it went on on about every 10 mins he just shrugged his shoulders.
This is one place that i would not recommend and I think to have a book that asked you to write comments but only in pencil, and when you look at the book you can see where things have been rub out and pages have been torn out .
Very sad.

Went here recently for lunch - normal chef was off so had to choose from a basic menu so we got basic food - all quite nice but not great value. Chips and ham trodden into rug in front of fire from the night before so i guess it was the cleaners day off too! The barman was quite amiable but the rest of the building, cleanliness and presentation left much to be desired - hopefully the next time we visit the chef and the cleaner are back from their time off!

A group of 9 of us were staying nearby and this was the only pub in walking distance. We certainly didn't need another pub as this was a great place - traditional country pub with log burner and warm feel, small restaurant area which served fantastic food at very reasonable prices.
There is a large games room with a pool table out the back and a large beer garden although we visited in January so didn't spend any time in the garden!

This review is for the food only, not the hotel.

We ate here twice this week and the food was excellent.

We tried the trio of prok, beef madras, duck and five spice pork. All delicious and highly recommended to all.

We would eat here again without a moment's hesitation. The food is a very high standard at a very reasonable price. Service is wonderful.

Room Tip: We did not stay here

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

Stayed overnight in this usefully positioned inn (going to nearby birthday party).More of a pub with rooms,(obviously) than a hotel but served its purpose.Nice big car park at the back which was a bonus as all the roads are narrow around there and the inn is right on the road. This means you can go in and out the back without going through the pub.The room we were given was icy cold when we arrived but soon warmed up when we got the radiator going.Nice and quiet as it is positioned in the countryside on a not too busy small country road. One criticism was that is got really cold in the night as the heating must have been turned off,but there was a small electric heater that we put back on.The sheets felt really cold too. This was, however a very cold week-end and a particularly cold night.
Not much into breakfast anyway but it was very basic, cereal, toast and a cooked english to order.Would have liked some continental pastries maybe and fruit or cheeses, like you get in most hotels but it suited this typically english small establishment.Would have preferred a 10am finish instead of 9am too.
On the whole pretty good and probably a lovely place to stay in the summer.
