“Well maintained but very dated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2012

The twin room was very very small, the two beds were pushed up against each other and there was barely room to walk around the beds. Small dressing table but no armchairs/table where you could eat roomservice if you got it. The hotel itself is very clean, however the decor is very 80's. There was no hairdryer in the room. The signage could be improved in the hotel, it wasnt very clear when we were leaving our room what route we should take to go the exit/dining room etc. Bathroom was adequate but dated and the shower was useless.
Plus points of this hotel are definately the staff who are friendly and the cleanliness of the hotel.

My family stayed at this hotel to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday,(New Year's Day) Our two night stay included New Year's Eve. The visit started badly, reception had the booking completely confused, wrong names, wrong dates, and finally said they had no record of the full payment my mum had made for all rooms and celebration meals for seven people, (paid a fortnight earlier! )The receptionist was less than helpful, My Mum had forgotten her receipt but assumed an establishment of this 4* category would have everything recorded - not so! Always take your paperwork with you to this hotel. We discovered that conferencing department doesn't talk to front of house, or the Country Kitchen restaurant,as they had not passed on our evening meal booking, so again another debarcle when we arrived for our meal. Fortunately, nothing was too much trouble for the staff of the Country Kitchen, they dealt with the problem with a smile, unlike the reception staff. However, worryingly, they also said these 'slip -ups' happen all the time

Our check-in problems were resolved by the Duty Manager, who arranged complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits for our party, but for my Mum the damage had been done and she did not enjoy the weekend as she should have done, especially as she had been so embarrassed at reception. We were never given any explanation as to why all the details of the booking had not been passed to reception, despite telling my Mum he would investigate and let her know.

Bar staff and restaurant staff were great.

The rooms are tired and lack the character of similar boutique hotels. Although privately owned the hotel does not offer a friendly family feel.

The leisure facilities, although a small pool, were good and the staff here were excellent too.

It was also a pity that bottled water was not provided in the standard single rooms. A pack of two biscuits in a double room also seems a bit miserly, especially as it was a superior room.

Room Tip: Rooms beyond the conservatory and the Charter suite are quieter and have access to the rear carpark

Thank you for your comments about the problems experienced over New Year. I have fully investigated the communication problems that occurred and spoken directly to Mrs West earlier this week and offered our full apologies. Mrs West is satisfied with our response and we look forward to welcoming the family back in the near future.

We booked up in september for a 2 night stay from christmas day. We arrived around 5.30pm on the day, and have to say that when we saw the room we were very dissapointed. The room looked different to the one on the website. We had booked a superior room and our room looked the same as a standard room with extra chairs and a table quashed in to justify it being called superior but it was cramped. When we complained we were told that it was superior and the hotel was full so we coud not be moved. The decor was tired and 1980's. The shower door did not close so water dripped onto the floor and the side of the bath was badly patched with polyfiller. The spa facilities were good we used the pool and sauna. There was a lack of space to sit and have a drink in the evenings and I did'nt want to spend much time in the cramped room. I had been looking foward to nice chrismas break but left feeling dissapointed. Needless to say we will not be returning.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights on B & B basis, overall it was very nice, relaxing with good food and lovely staff.

The room was nice but the bathroom was very outdated, intermittent hot water in shower.

The food in both the Bar and Country Kitchen were excellent, we ate at varying times of the day from breakfast to dinner over the 5 days we stayed and all were lovely.

Downside: On the day of our arrival there was no available parking spaces in their carpark, i was advised to park on the grassed area at the back of the hotel, later in the evening the rain was torrential, as we had drank alcohol i asked for someone to move my car as i was worried it would become stuck in the mud - i was told they were not insured for this and the porter and duty manager did not want to do it - the staff then proceeded to move their own cars !

We checked out for one night and one of us checked back in for one night as they were full on the Saturday night. The bed sheets had not been changed from the previous occupants, this was rectified and the staff member apologised and brought some chocolates !

I would stay again as the location of this hotel is excellent and overall it is very good but there were a few things (as above) which we felt were not up to standard.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking fields at back.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that our staff were able to sort out problems to your satisfaction. Your comments on decor are noted for our future refurbishment programme. We would love to have been able to help move your car but, regrettably, our insurance cover does not allow us to drive/park guests' cars. We look forward to being of service again in the future.

Had a 2 night stay at this hotel and cannot really fault the place.
We made use of the leisure facilities which are free as part of your room rate. The pool is not massive but just enough for a relaxing dip.
If you want to pamper yourself, the spa and treatments are excellent, try the hot stones massage! Stacey was brilliant!
The breakfast quality was superb and I could not fault it. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful.
