Our two-day stay at Candlesticks was an unexpected highlight in a 3 1/2-week trip to England. My wife and I visited Stamford because my great-grandfather had lived there 100 years ago. We chose Candlesticks because it was inexpensive and an easy walk from the train station. What a smart choice! Host Nelio Pinto was a perfect combination of warmth, unobtrusive helpfulness and local knowledge. When we had to rush dinner in his delightful cellar restaurant, he arranged to have dessert waiting in our room when we returned from the theater. OK, it's centuries old. The rooms are small, the stairways are narrow and the floorboards creak. But it's warm, comfortable and charming. We had a delightful time.

It was almost like a chapter out of Sherlock Holmes. I arrived at the Stamford Station on a fog filled evening in November. The ten minute walk from the station to the Candlesticks had me looking over my shoulders every ten paces. But as soon as I arrived at the hotel, the warmth which permeated from the owners wiped away all notions of Jack the Ripper and company. For the next two days, thier kind hospitality made my stay there a pleasant one. And not forgetting the excellent fish that they served (could be from their Portuguese heritage). For anyone wanting to step back into time with turn of the century (19th century, that is) type bedrooms, this is the place to be.
