“Afternoon tea”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

We were staying with family in nearby Market Deeping and this is one of their favourite places. We sat outside on a beautiful sunny day. The food looked good but as we only had coffee as we had already had lunch but the service was friendly. Went for a look around inside. What a beautiful building! Pity we don't live in the UK. I would love to have my 70th birthday there.

Many years ago when young and poor we were stranded in Stamford on a winter evening, during a coach breakdown. The George just happened to be the nearest place to go. Obviously tired and scruffy we were made welcome here in the bar; and promised ourselves we would come back and stay when older and richer. And so we have done nearly thirty years later! A marvelous and interesting building going back a thousand years or so, with a warren of rooms and corridors all at different levels etc. Fantastic service, lovely rooms (ours was on the small side but didn't matter). The panelled restaurant fabulous, you could choose to eat outside in the courtyard, as it was a warm evening). Breakfast good.
We will be returning

The George has been a coaching inn seemingly forever, and it has the quirky floor plan and narrow halls that go with age. The rooms have been recently remodeled and are quite modern, but the hall floors sound like they are centuries old and squeal with every step any guest takes. The rooms as the very end of the halls will get the least hall noise. The hotel is a hike from the car park, be sure to get a porter to get your luggage. The rooms vary dramatically in size. Our daughter’s single room was very small. The noise levels differ depending on the streets or courtyards they look down upon. Breakfast included extensive cold and cooked to order options. There are few nice restaurants in Stamford, but the George has at least 3 different dining rooms and in nice weather an outdoors seating area. You can walk everywhere in town from the George.

Thank you so much for your kind review. Creaky floors tend to happen when you are over a 1000 years old! Lovely to hear that you like the bedrooms. We hope we have the pleasure in welcoming you all back soon.

We have now stayed at this hotel on one occasion, when attending a wedding but have been regular visitors for lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and casual drinks. On every occasion, we have been very impressed with the level of service, the friendly and courteous staff and the wonderful atmosphere.

If you're looking for a cheap and cheerful hotel then this is not for you. If you're looking for superb rooms, with a choose of standards, excellent food and great atmosphere, then take a look at the George.

Room Tip: wi-fi signals are not strong so ask before you book the room. The rooms are all excellent and vary...

My wife and I and two friends called in for lunch on Saturday 9th August 2014, having previously called 10 years ago! The menu was appealing, the meal was first class, the service excellent and the ambience and environment superb. There was nothing to criticise hence awarding the restaurant five stars.

Room Tip: Only visited the restaurant.

This old inn has plenty of character and the delightful staff make sure that you have excellent service as well. Our room, a superior room, was spacious, beautifully decorated and with an enormous bed and overlooked the pretty garden. Your room price includes early morning tea ( plus extra orange juice) plus breakfast which was excellent local produce. I only wished we had booked to stay for longer. We asked for a quiet room which was worth it as we didn't hear any of the busy road traffic, just birds and the church bells- wonderful!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room. A superior room is well worth the bit extra

Did not stay here. Early evening meal in Garden Court Yard. Both of us had lovely main courses and shared a Summer Pudding to die for. We did have a slight wait for a side salad ordered later in the meal but quality of food and the nice setting will mean I will be back.
