“Charming hotel”
Reviewed 12 August 2009

My husband and I have recently returned from a two night break at this hotel. We would recommend it. We stayed on a special tariff of £95 per night, per room, bed and breakfast.

Our room, number 55, overlooking the courtyard was pretty, sunny, clean, quiet and comfortable. It was not very large, but it didn't matter unless you were staying for a long time. The room was decorated with real orchids which was a lovely touch.

We had two evening meals and breakfast in the garden room. The choice at breakfast was extensive and very nicely cooked. Our evening meals were tasty and the price was what I would expect - not cheap but nicely done.

The hotel is very popular and was constantly busy with people eating lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The Courtyard was a charming place to sit in the sunshine after a day out, relaxing amongst the palm trees and potted geraniums.

The town of Stamford is very attractive, especially if you like Georgian architecture. Burghley House is a leisurely 35 minute walk across parkland and well worth a visit.

I'd go back like a shot for another short break.

I went with my wife and two friends to the Garden Restaurant - Highly overpriced. I had the lobster with spaghetti - the spaghetti was the worst I’ve ever had anywhere - I've had better at a greasy spoon. The other's had dishes which were overpriced for the quality of the food on the plate - give this joint a miss - Stamford has much more to offer.

the george at stamford is without a rare find these days
stayed for one night ( £95.00 bed and breakfast package)
from the moment of checking in the service offered by all staff was first rate - the history of this coaching inn is amazing (as is stamford) our room ( 40 ) was at the front of the building over looking the main road which at times was noisy and would suggest avoiding if possable
room was spotless and had a good mix of the old and the new
food was good although abit on the expensive side and was plentiful again service was excellent and we had a great meal in the courtyard
breakfast first rate with excellent coffee and the kidneys with breakfast very tasty
Stamford as a whole is a real gem of a place
would certainly stay again but perhaps eat else where

We had heard good things of the George and were not disappointed. Excellent room (thanks for the upgrade!) overlooking the courtyard - best hotel bathroom I've seen. Dined in both the restaurants - two good meals, well served. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Breakfast cooked to order - definitely not one of those unappetising buffets! Staff all very pleasant and efficient. The George manages to be a very good hotel while keeping the 'coaching inn' atmosphere and without spoiling the fine building and grounds. We'll certainly be back.

Fascinating old hotel with a labyrinth of corridors but maintained to a high standard with wonderful service. The only disappointment was the restaurant - the service was well above the norm but the meals were rather bland and cold on arrival, especially when the above average cost was taken into consideration. Loved the location within an unspoilt historic town and the history of the hotel itself. Would I return again ? Definitely but I may choose to dine away from the main restaurant, possibly choosing the Garden Room or courtyatd which are less informal. It's probably worth noting that breakfast was excellent with personal service rather than the more usual buffet . Car parking was plentiful and the hotel gardens were very well maintained..

I wanted to treat my boyfriend to a fabulous weekend away for his birthday and we couldn't have had a better time. The food was wonderful. We had dinner in the informal garden lounge. Staff were very attentive and friendly. The room was very comfortable with tasteful decor overlooking the courtyard. Would definately recommend to others.

Picked the George for a business meeting - needed somewhere halfway between Cambridge and Nottingham. Very pleasant place, old, charming, choice of bars/lounges, open fires, friendly service. We had a two hour meeting then a bar meal in the York bar, all good. We'll be using it now a regular venue.
