“Fabulous Christmas Break!!!!”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

What a superb Christmas!
My wife and I stayed here from the afternoon of Christmas Eve, until after breakfast on Boxing Day, and found the whole experience an absolute pleasure.
From the delicious afternoon tea on the afternoon of arrival, to leaving on Boxing Day, the whole experience was a delight, the food throughout our stay was superb, and beautifully presented. (Previous reviewers please note my sirloin on Christmas Eve was cooked (rare) to perfection and was delicious!).
The staff at the hotel were incredibly polite, friendly and informative, even when faced with people somewhat lacking in manners!
The hotel, as it say's on the website, is "quirky" in so much as many of the public rooms are small (cozy), but this does not detract from the charm of the stay, but merely adds to it.
Our room, number 19 "Virtuous" was spacious, warm, and could not be criticized in any way.
We found the whole stay a delight, and it made our Christmas (our first away from children and grandchildren), an absolute pleasure.
Congratulations and thanks to all the staff for making our stay such a memorable visit, and I would have no hesitation in recommending the William Cecil to friends, and am hopeful of visiting again in the future.
If one was to be super critical then the only slight issue would be that the bar was converted to an extension of the restaurant for Christmas lunch, restricting the opportunity to sit and have a pre lunch drink in a relaxed area, but the residents lounge was available just down the corridor.
Overall - fabulous!

Room Tip: We took a luxury room overlooking the car park (number 19) and had no issues whatsoever, these would...

Thank you for such a great review. It's such a treat for all the staff to read such warm words and to hear all their hard work over Christmas was well received. With the benefit of hindsight, I think you're absolutely right about the bar area not been available for hotel guests to relax in. Next year we will certainly make sure that it is! Hopefully we won't have to wait another year before we see you again at the William Cecil.

We have eaten at the hotel several time and also for sunday lunch, so we decided to book in for Christmas

Stayed in No 15, towel rail in bathroom made the whole room too hot and I could not turn it off , walking around the bed was difficult. Bed was comfortable.

The food overall was during this christmas poor, we had to return our steaks on christmas eve as they where cold and tough not as described on the menu (21 day aged sirloin steaks) .
The breakfast was not memorable and the christmas day lunch was a disaster presentation poor, roast potatoes rock hard, no sprouts and the remaining veg was dried out, turkey favour ok but thick cut, one slice and tough, pig in blanket was overcooked/burnt.
The hotel has 26 rooms equals at least 52 people, the only public lounge seated approx 6 people and as it was christmas even the bar area was utilized for eating, as the room had no comfortable seating you were forced to use the bed !
The hotel is a great base for exploring Stamford, the car park is large and it's a short walk into town. The management listened and responded to my critics

Room Tip: Ask for an adequately sized room at rear of hotel

We arrived late on a Saturday evening after checking out of a nearby hell hole of a hotel.
The receptionist was fantastic. He swiftly showed us a fabulous room and ushered us into the bar to relax over a glass of wine allowing us to select from the delicious menu.
Both dinner and breakfast were delightful and the service was excellent. Not overbearing but friendly and personal.
Our room was lovely. The bed was enormous and the mattress just right.
A fantastic hotel !

Stayed here with friends. A lovely hotel with some very interesting rooms. We had a room on the ground floor at the back and very nice is was too. Didn't have any toiletries in the room so asked reception for some, but ended up having to remind the receptionist 30 mins later (but he was very busy with a wedding reception) and 5 mins later he arrived at the room with plenty of bath products. Food was excellent and the bar well stocked. Breakfasts were very good with pretty much all you could want and more. I would think this location would be lovely in the summer. Never been to Stamford before, but will visit again in the summer.

Room Tip: If worried about traffic noise from the main road...ask for a room at the back. They will accommodat...

Thank you for your lovely review. I'm sorry that your bathroom products were not in your room on arrival but glad you given copious amounts to make up for it. We're delighted you enjoyed the food and glad you also liked out bar, which we've made some recent improvements to.

If you do manage to make it back to Stamford in the summer, I'd recommend you book our '9th Earl' bedroom as it has a lovely private garden to enjoy the sun!

What a wonderful place to stay! Our room was amazing, the staff attentive and friendly at all times, and the food at the Bull & Swan - toe curlingly good. I can't wait to find an excuse to stay again. Thank you very very much for making my husband's birthday treat everything I could have wished for.

Thank you for such a great review. It's so good to hear you not only got to experience the William Cecil but also had chance to visit our little sister, The Bull and Swan. Next time, make sure you stay at the Bull and Swan (I'd recommend the Ram or Stag rooms) and come and have dinner with us!

Stayed here for a business meeting at the beginning of December. Nothing to complain about however nothing also to say was exceptionally well. Several work colleagues with me and what can only be described as a vast standard difference between decor and cleanliness of rooms.

Stayed in No 16, towel rail made the whole room too hot and the drain in the bathroom gave the whole room a fusty wet cloth smell. A knee length dress was too long to hang in the wardrobe and the furniture was far too large for the room, walking around the bed was difficult. I opened the window to cool the room down and to do this had to move the table and tray sat in front of it. A re-organisation of where the furniture is place in this room desperately needs to happen. Bed was comfortable.

The food overall was adequate however not much thought had gone into what was served during our business meeting and especially when lunch on both days was predominantly Pork. Scotch eggs sausage rolls and a Egg Ceasar Salad that had bacon in it. Not an issue for myself however a muslim and 2 vegetarians had nothing savoury to eat.

Room Tip: Ask for an adequately sized room

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay, particularly as we had received such excellent feedback from the rest of your party. You stayed in one of our smaller 'classic' rooms, whereas the majority of your party stayed in 'chic' and 'luxury' rooms which are, in some cases, much larger rooms. There is of course no excuse for the drain smell in your room, and this has now been addressed.

I'm sorry you didn't find the food enjoyable for your meeting. We have plenty of dishes on our function menus which are vegetarian and do not contain pork, but unfortunately the menu you were served was what was chosen by your organiser.

It's very rare that I sleep well in a hotel, but this was an exception, for the following reasons:
1. Exceptionally comfortable, huge bed (no problem to ask for the feather pillows to be swapped for synthetic either)
2. Permanently warm bathroom (thanks to large heated towel rail), even first thing in the morning.
3. Complete peace and quiet during the night.
We had Room 18, 'Bacchus', which I selected after much research of the pictures and details on the hotel website. It's not very big, but is quiet because it's at the back of the hotel, and has a large window overlooking a flat roof, trees and the marquee. This isn't a hotel to go to for 'views' but at least at the back you don't get any road noise.
We didn't eat dinner here, but the breakfast was the best we've ever had in a hotel. There was a huge choice of every conceivable breakfast food to choose from, and the 'Full English' was beautifully cooked and presented, and served fresh and hot. The service was attentive but not intrusive.
The hotel is a great base for exploring Stamford, the car park is large and it's a short walk into town. There's even a gate at the bottom of the hotel garden that goes straight into Burghley Park.
Only a couple of niggles - I didn't like the sickly lemon-scented toiletries provided (would have preferred more 'herbal' fragrances); and when I booked on the phone I found one staff member to be a little supercilious. Having said that, all the staff we encountered during our stay were great.
Great value for such a lovely hotel. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Stamford. Book early to get a better price - I booked 2 nights originally, but had to cancel one of them just two days before our stay - this was no problem.

Room Tip: Room 18 'Bacchus' at the back of the hotel is quiet and warm. For more light and space, luxu...

What a lovely review - thank you. Bacchus is certainly a great room, but we've got so many others to choose from as well! My personal favourite is Cecil, which is equally quiet but also has a great roll top bath as well.

We're really chuffed you enjoyed breakfast so much and just hope you have chance to try our dinner menu as well, next time you're in Stamford.
