A picnic on the lawn before a magical performance on Alice in Wonderland made for a great first visit to this amazing place.
A beautiful piece of outdoor theatre in a beautiful location that the kids will love.
Some people did get the wrong idea and think they would picnic WHILE watching the show. That's not the case. The lawns are outside the covered theatre.
There is also a cafe that sells drinks, including interval drinks and good facilities that can cope with crowds.
Good views wherever you sit and the sound carried well to the back of the theatre with some genuinely interesting ideas from the director.
Highly recommended and will look forward to visiting again.

Unusual outdoor experience. Fun setting on the edge of the woods. The auditorium is covered but the actors can get rained on! Take a picnic before the show or eat in their lovely restaurant. Bar, tea and coffee also available.

As always I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Tolethorpe. Not a huge Shakespeare fan (I much preferred The productions of Dads Army the company did ) but the setting is magical. The acting for this play was excellent throughout especially all the male characters. The costumes and staging were really lovely. Fabulous picnic area and nice bar.

Had a fun time with my nephews. The weather was lovely and the kids enjoyed the beautiful compound which was ideal for our picnic. I could see that the play was definitely aimed towards children because my 2 little nephews really enjoyed it with the music, dancing and bright costumes. Definitely recommend it to families for an excellent summers day outing.

We had a wonderful evening at the preview to Alice. The rain held off, so we were able to have a lovely picnic in the grounds - phew! And the performance was brilliant. I remember listening to the Alice stories as a child on cassette tapes (yes I am that old!) and I am pleased to say that this production is very close to the original stories. I found myself joining in on the jabberwocky and the Walrus and the Carpenter. It brought back lovely memories. The production came up with some great ideas for representing Alice's dream-world and the actors were great - The Mad Hatter was probably my favourite! Well done on a great performance.
