“Excellent value - a characterful old inn offering great food & rooms”

What a lucky find. We intended to stay only one night, but ended up staying three! We could have spent 2 or 3 times the price at the beautiful George Hotel nearby, but the Bull & Swan - also a historic former coaching inn, but much smaller, cheaper and a lot less grand - is also full of character and turned out to be the perfect choice for us. We wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but also to visit a few historic churches in and near Stamford that had family connections. The Bull & Swan was just perfect.
On arrival we were mildly confused looking for the reception (there isn't one, just go into the bar), but then we were greeted pleasantly by a young member of staff and shown our room. This was fairly large, simply but tastefully decorated and, despite being over the bar and overlooking the main road, we were not troubled by any undue noise.
We chose to eat-in each night. On the first evening, we sat in the main dining area but feared this might be a mistake as we were the only ones there. We need not have worried: the manager and waitresses were very attentive. In fact we could not fault the service we received for the whole of our stay. And the food was excellent.
All in all, we thought this was a great place to stay and would certainly choose it again if we were to visit Stamford again.

We had a beautifully furnished room with many extras and a lovely large bathroom. The staff were friendly, but not intrusive. Breakfast was wonderful with more on offer than just the usual English breakfast. Would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Imagine that all the rooms are equally well appointed.

I chose the Bull and Swan after looking at the reviews on here. Just wanted 1 night away for my partner's birthday. The room was lovely, big and spotlessly clean with lots of little extras that make it stand out from other B&Bs. The shower was great and the bed was extremely comfy. I would definitely stay here again on a B&B basis. The inn is situated close to the town so is in a great location. Unlike others I wasn't bothered by traffic noise at all so don't let that put you off. One comment I would make and the only reason I didn't give an excellent rating is that they don't appear to cater for a Sunday evening dining. We had intended on eating there Sunday evening but with such a limit choice available went elsewhere. As it was a bank holiday weekend I would have expected a fuller menu than what was offered and I did get a slight impression that they only had what was left over from Sunday lunch. Don't let that put you off though as if you are staying on a B&B basis they are almost faultless. There are some lovely independent restaurants within easy walking distance anyway. I did raise my concerns at the time and everything was dealt with swiftly and professionally and they appeared to take the comments on board and you can't say fairer than that!

Can't praise this hotel enough!! There may only be seven rooms but it's better than most four star chain hotels I have stayed in. The rooms are individually styled so feel very intimate, every whim is catered for, from posh coffee to a vodka night cap there's nothing that's too much trouble. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful, the food brill and the drinks reasonable, what more can you ask?? Please dont change anything cant' wait to come back!!

We stayed one night on our way to Scotland. The hotel is in a sensitively refurbished coaching inn walking distance from Burghley House. We had an exceptionally comfortable room and very spacious bathroom with a superb shower and bath. Dinner consisted of local produce, well cooked and presented. We'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Stamford is full of history and worth a few days to explore. The Bull and Swan is in a great location south of the river on the old Great North Road. Rooms are well appointed with tv and wifi, bed was enormous and very comfortable. Staff very friendly and breakfast was delicious cooked fresh rather than self serve. We didn't eat at the restaurent but the menu looked good. Will do next tine we stay!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Once upon a time there was a drinking club at Burghley House. It was founded by The 5th Earl of Exeter in 1684 and it was called The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. It had an eclectic bunch of members: The Baptist Earl of Gainsborough was known as Greyhound, The Hon Charles Bertie was The Stag and The Earl of Denbigh was Tyger amongst other nefarious characters. They would have drunk locally brewed ales, feasted on Burghley Estate and other local produce and created total bedlam. Things have a habit of coming round and we are delighted to invite you to dine on our local produce, sup our fine ales and obviously behave very, very well! ... more   less
