I am writing this review in response to the review submitted by modernman41. My wife and were also at the savoy for valentines weekend and i have to say that we totally disagree with everything in that review. We had a wonderful time, the hotel had really made an effort, the restaurant was beautifully decorated and the food was superb, and all for only £44 each per night including meals on both nights, great value. The staff were very friendly and were always available. The room was clean and very well furnished. My wife and i go to the savoy 4 or 5 times a year for different occasions and our son and his family also use the hotel in the summer, and we all agree that the hotel is excellent. The owners are always spending money to improve the hotel, currently they are decorating the bar and reception areas, and they always do a number of rooms each year as well. We really cannot see where modernman41 can complain about anything at the savoy and we would thoroughly recommend this hotel to everyone, if you like quality homecooked meals with comfortable rooms and surroundings you must use the savoy if you are in skegness. Skegness is also a great place to visit with good shops and in the summer one of the best beaches around, our grandchildren love the fair and the amusements. Many thanks to everyone at the savoy see you again in the summer. Richard & Jane Thompson.

we booked a nice hotel for valentines weekend with the royal hotel, they then rang and told us 3 days before our trip that there was a problem with our room and would it be ok to transfer us to the savoy! we agreed as the savoy is a good name in the hotel industry, however, what a dissapointment, the decor is all 1970's, its in desparate need of improvement and modernistion, the rooms are VERY basic, paintwork patchy and carpet very badly worn, the lift was wooden and rickerty, felt unsafe and tiny. we ended up just sleeping there, didn't even bother with breakfast as we didnt want to chance food poisoning, had a good shower when we got home horrible place

I've got to be careful just to review the hotel on it's own merits and not let the fact that I didn't like Skegness get in the way. Having said that, if this hotel was as it is but located somewhere more upmarket it probably wouldn't be as popular as it is!
The location is perfect for the fun fair, amusement arcades, gardens, beach and town. The outside is overwhelmingly yellow but to be fair it doesn't look out of place and they have nice steps with modern lighting and great hanging baskets that are well cared for. Disabled access is good.Reception is welcoming and mostly friendly. a large number of electric buggies for less mobile guests seem to be plugged in near reception overnight but that shouldn't be a problem for other guests.
There is lift access to the 1st and 2nd floors only so if you struggle with stairs make sure you don't get a room on the 3rd floor! One of the lifts is very antiquated and you have to be careful not to break the electronic beam otherwise you get locked in and have to re activate the lift. It is also a very cosy fit for the max of 2 people it holds.
Our room on the 3rd floor was very tired with stained wallpaper and older furniture although the carpet seemed fairly new. The en suite shower room was clean except for the shower cubicle itself. There was an abundance of mould on the door seal and the shower head itself was black and slimy. Yuck! I had to scrape some off with the lid of my shampoo bottle to get a flow of water and then this would stop completely on a regular basis, I presume because of bad pressure to the 3rd floor. The hospitality tray was mean with horror of horrors 1970's style glass mugs and plastic spoons!
The hotel bar was lacking in a choice of beer but wasn't too expensive.
We stayed on a half board basis and the food is best described as adequate. The breakfast was probably superior to dinner but not as good as some guest houses I've stayed in. The porridge was nice but not hot enough and apart from grapefruit no other fruit was offered. The full English was nice though but would have been better if wholemeal toast was available as well. Dinners were just Ok for the type of hotel but all varied around a theme and you got the feeling dishes were recycled eg. Braised steak one night became Beef Cobbler the next. Portions were good but we had carrots every night!!!
The biggest disappointment was with the advertised entertainment as we were hoping for more dancing in what is a very nice ballroom. There was only one evening's dancing available during the week and while of good quality the music was supplied by an organist who seemed to be devoid or any personality and seemed to have lost the will to live. The hotel claims the ballroom is the jewel in their crown, it's just a shame they don't use it enough! The other entertainment was mostly good, a little loud maybe. The one exception being on the last evening when the excessive volume drove everyone in our party to bed early!
On the whole the staff are very friendly with a couple of exceptions. The hotel also allows owners to have dogs in their rooms and public rooms, not something I approve of but I appreciate that others may.

I think if I did want to return to Skegness, which I don't ever, ever, ever I would be be able to find something cheaper that offered the same quality!
