“WE LOVE THE ROYAL HOTEL”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

I am the secretary of a Social Club and in October we returned for our third year to The Royal Hotel for our annual dinner. About fifty of our group arrived on the Friday for our weekend and joined in a 'Romantic Candlelit Dinner and Shirley Bassey Theme night' organised by the hotel. At £19 a ticket this was superb value. The Romantic dinner lived up to our expectations as did the singer. After this excellent start to our weekend it only got better and better. Our Saturday night function went exactly as planned, without any hitch.
Our booking now has become a repeat 'year on year' event. Indeed several members from our parent club in Lancashire now join us, despite the rather tedious West to East journey. Everything we have asked of the hotel they have sorted and now have their own in house sound system which is ideal for our 'after dinner speakers'. Parking at the Hotel is both spacious and free. An adjacent Indian restaurant also owned by the hotel is again excellent and means visitors have a choice of food and can drink freely without driving. The interior of the hotel has a Grandeur not seen in modern hotels giving it a spacious feel that adds to the experience. The Manager and all his staff are all excellent.
There is no question that within Skegness this is certainly a hotel you should consider. Over the years we have stayed in eight different hotel venues within Skegness. Our only disappointment is that we did not find the Royal Hotel earlier!

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the Hotel look Eastward over dunes towards the sea. This rear car park also...

Just back from another themed weekend at the royal hotel, we've been times many and find these weekends great value for our mixed age group. We went to see Sal as Elvis last year and this year was just as good. We were a party of nine and must admit over the months have about driven the staff crazy changing this booking, and they've been great. Breakfast great, just help yourself to as much as you want, it's a good buffet. The first nights meal was excellent couldn't fault it, the 2nd night, well it was ok i guess for mass catering, i'd change that menu a bit though and exclude the seafood stirfry!!! Rooms were fine, the upgrading continues so its luck of the drawer but they're fine for a couple of nights, and alot now have good size TV's. It's a huge place to maintain, and always work to be done. The staff are great, it's good to see the same faces as well as some new. Was also good to see the fountain cleaned up and working, still needs a bit of work outside but getting there. Given the current economic situation i think they are doing a pretty good job at the Royal, and we'll be booking for the next Elvis tribute.

Room Tip: Grab a sea view room or one right on the back overlooking the gardens, rooms with balconies nice in...

We stayed at the royal for a rock & roll week-end.
It was great value for money, with DBB for two nights and entertainment for just over £80 each!
Also in the winter the rates at this hotel are very competitive for midweek & week-end breaks.

Its an grand old building which has been renovated in recent years, although the bedrooms are stil being updated,
The food in the hotel is very good, especially the Bollywood restaurant if you like indian food.
It has a big car park and is near the seafront and the centre of Skegness.

The starf are very helpful and friendly, although it is a old building it has a lift so it is disabled friendly.

Room Tip: if you find it difficult to walk ask for a room near the lift as there are many rooms down corridors...

Having booked a stay at The Royal, mainly due to 2 restaurants & car parking on site and with a great location, I was alarmed to read some of the reviews. However our room overlooked the sea (well it did until the fog decended!), was clean comfortable and warm. We ate in both restaurants, and could not fault the menu's, service, food or prices. The only fault with the Bollywood restaurant was that the condiments came in plastic sachets. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. As it was built in 1896 it has so much character. The bar prices were a little high, but I would stay there again.

Room Tip: 4th floor, overlooking the sea or garden

We booked two rooms here about 2 months ago and wondered why they did not take a deposit or payment . We discovered why the night before we were due to arrive when the hotel phoned us at 7pm to say they could not accommodate us . They made up some story about a mains water leak but apparently they often do this to accommodate coaches . Obviously its all about the money here and not about good service . Will never bother with them again .

Room Tip: Dont even bother !

This hotel used to be the top hotel in Skegness years ago and it is so great to see it being restored to its former glory! Having had our wedding reception there it was so lovely to go back with my family and to see it! The location is superb as are the reception rooms downstairs. Having said that at 3.45 on an early September afternoon sitting in the lovely conservatory we were unable to order afternoon tea as the kitchen was closed! What a shame!
Undeterred we tried to eat in the Bollywood restaurant there--but it was closed on Mondays! Both times the staff were not helpful and we were soooo disapointed!!! Outside there are large signs saying tea and coffee open to non residents and Bollywood restaurant open 7 days a week-but clearly not so!!
Come on the Royal you can retake your crown but you need to work hard to get there. I wondered if the owners of the hotel actually know what is going on inside as they have clearly invested heavily in this place. So disappointed but hope it succeeds! Will try again another year.
