I emailed ahead and requested room 34 as we had stayed here on our previous visit and found it to be delightful. Our request was granted and we enjoyed the room just as much as before.

I also emailed the hotel to request unsmoked bacon with the delicious English breakfast. Again, this was provided and the breakfast and service was as friendly and efficient as ever.
i ate in the green room on 2 occasions during our stay and both times the experience was thoroughly enjoyable. The current promotion, which includes 3 courses and a carafe of wine for 2 people for £40 is exceptional value.
There were some building works being carried out during our stay, but this did not detract from the overall experience. I understand a glass roof is being installed over the central courtyard.
We look forward to staying at the hotel the next time we are visiting UK.

Let me start by saying this hotel is a great little hotel, clean and functional with friendly and very helpful staff. We stayed a Friday and Saturday evening in August when visiting Colchester for a friends wedding. I left my hotel booking late so my choices were limited. The North Hill Hotel could put us up but the Junior Suite I wanted was only available on the Friday night so I opted for this and a change of rooms on the Saturday night. My choice was limited! The Junior Suite was at the back of the hotel, quite spacious with good sitting area and a decent sized flat screen TV. Also a very spacious bathroom. A great night's sleep. And then the move to the Standard Double room at the front of the hotel for the Saturday night. A small room with little space to move around, tiny bathroom and tiny flat screen tv. But it was the noise most of the night that kept us awake. Other reviewers have mentioned this and our experience tells me that if you can't get a back room at the weekend then re-consider your opitions. The front of the hotel is on North Hill. For an hour or so upto 2am a car alarm kept me awake. From around 2am to 4am it was the revellers leaving a nearby wine bar. And they are noisy. And you can't escape the noise. So I had a good sleep on Friday night and little on the Saturday night. A hotel of two halves! On a positive note the breakfast and food is great, nice little bar area and great staff. There is no parking so the nearby NCP car park can be used for £5 regardless of length of time the car is in the car park.

Accommodating, efficient and polite staff from check in to departure. The room was compact but functional for a 1 night stay, might get irritating if staying for more than one night with two people. The room at the front was noisy even with the windows shut, but expected as on a main road. In all suited our purpose well, would not advise a front room if on holiday and after rest and relaxation. Good value for a clean, neat room with very good service.

Room Tip: get a room at the back for a peaceful stay

Visited Colchester from Canada in early August for a family wedding. We're not frequent travelers to the UK so we relied heavily upon Trip Advisor ratings when choosing this hotel. Most of the reviews we read agreed perfectly with our experience. There are many positives: the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful, the Green Room restaurant has excellent food (breakfast was included in our rate), and the location is very convenient if you need to access the High street area of town-it is a one or two minute walk away. It was a very short taxi ride from the train station (we did not hire a car so relied on public transport). We stayed in a suite, room 32, and it was a great size and had plenty of character (my parents stayed in the suite below, 31 or 30, and it too was large and nice, but ours was better, ha ha). It was also on the back side of the hotel, away from North Hill street, which turned out to be a big positive because the street gets quite loud on Friday and Saturday nights as people wander to and from the pubs just up the road. By the way, the closest pub to the hotel had a special where you could get two good dinners for 8 pounds, unbelievable. The street noise would probably be a negative if you stayed in a room at the front of the hotel. Colchester itself is a nice town with lots of shopping areas close to the hotel, and the Castle park is just down the High street a short way. This park connects to what seems like two other large green parks with lovely flower gardens, and goes all the way down to the Colne river. It is very large and makes for a nice walk. We loved this hotel and would certainly return, although I highly doubt we'll have a specific reason to return to Colchester!

Room Tip: Suite 32 was amazing. Stay away from the front (North Hill) side of the hotel if you are staying on...

Although my room was really small (room 6, single bed) my stay at this hotel was wonderful. The reception was warm, the restaurant spacious and tasty, the courtyard outside was a great place to relax (it was boiling hot during our stay).

My parent's first room (1) was good but the curtain in the bathroom didn't close making is super hot so they moved to another room round the back which was really nice.

The hotel has a bit of a mediteranian feel to it, and was really quaint. The taxi's were able to find it easily. It is a 5 min walk into the shops. There is a far in each room which was really appreciated. Free mineral water in each room, and they gave me a huge bottle of cooled tap water when I was thiursty. Checking in and out was a breeze, and the car park over the road was handy.

I would certainly stay here again if I am in Colchester.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel, or up high

Stayed on a Saturday night. Fantastic hotel, the staff are amazing and can't do enough to help you. Unfortunately we had room 1 and on a hot Saturday night when you need the window open the noise from people leaving the bar down the road can be very loud. Breakfast was absolutely amazing. Would I stay again? Definitely but would want a room at the rear of the hotel. As an added bonus Northern Soul was playing in reception when we checked in. So any soulies coming to Colchester you know where to stay now

If, like me, you find yourself absolutely having to stay in Colchester for work purposes (why else?) you should head to the North Hill as your first choice.

Staff were friendly and welcoming and exceptionally professional. The rooms are new, well appointed and comfortable and to add to it all, the attached Bistro is an absolute delight offering superb (and reasonably priced) evening meals and an inspiring cooked-to-order breakfast. Hard to fault all round.
