Owner description: Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

Colchester Zoo is one of the best zoo's in the UK. The amount spent on the place recently is quite evident. Yes, you have to walk around it (can't quite believe people have complained about that) but they have a huge array of animals and inquisitive children love it. There’s a “road train” which the kids love and plenty of picnicking areas.

If you’re local, consider the “Gold Card” scheme which gives free re-entry.

Can get very busy during school holidays.

“What a zoo!!!”
Reviewed 17 April 2012

Seriously, if you're going to visit any British zoo, make it this one.

We Initially went on given tickets as I adopted a meerkat for my partner there. Staff gave us loads of information about her when we asked them, and we spent a long while at this enclosure.

We returned when my football club were playing Colchester that night, went here again for the day and loved it all over again.

Staff are phenomenonly helpful and friendly and approachable. We recommend the flying display, and also the indoor part with the ants - so fascinating! Fab zoo, definitely recommended!!

“A grand Day Out(ish)”
Reviewed 16 April 2012

Yes the animals looked fine (in fact we adopted a Leopard). I would also say that they all looked pampered and happy. Not so the visitors. This one is for die hard animal lovers. Facilities were average. Long walks to everything. Higgledy piggledy lay out.

BUT... All this pales into insignificance when you go into the so called restaurant. Thank God the animals don't have to eat in there. Uncaring staff. Facilities not as clean as they could (and should) be. As for the food... It was disgusting, foul and a general abomination.

Would we go again???? Yes but we will take a picnic lunch!!!!!!

We really enjoyed our afternoon at the zoo. It does get very crowded but in spite of the crowds, the selection of animals to see was brilliant. You get to see them quite close up too! I particularly enjoyed seeing the lemurs, owls and monkeys. I think it's a must-see in Colchester.

“Great day out”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

We love visiting this zoo, between this and Howletts, they are our favourite zoos. There are loads of well looked after animals in good habitats and there is ongoing things being added on all the time. Our favourite animals are the Sun Bears which were formerly at the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent (which has lost its star attraction now IMO) which are a delight to watch.

We don't have kids, but for those that do, there are loads of things for kids and families to enjoy.

As constructive criticism, but not to majorly detract from the overall review, the only downsides we have are that it is a bit disjointed to walk around, there are a lot of dead ends, so you have to back track a lot, and unless you know your way around it is easy to miss things. As a photographer, I find it hard to get pictures of most of the animals due to the large amount of glass with reflections that ruin the shots. We have been several times before, but today was the first (and last) time we have attended some of the events. We went to the bird show at 12:30, which turned out to be a guy talking and walking about with a Barn Owl followed by a Harris Hawk, with no flying and it lasted about 10 minutes - we had waited a while for it and put off other parts of the park in anticipation. We then attended the animal show, which only lasted about 15 minutes and consisted of about 6 parakeets, 2 parrots, then 3 skunks, all of which are good, but together don't constitute a show! After that the next bird display happened and that was good with several different birds actually flying.

Overall a great day out for anyone that likes a zoo.
