Lovely old hotel with lots of charm in a good location for seeing the 'castle' and as a base for seeing the area. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful right from checking in to checking out. The bedrooms were a good size and clean with tea and coffee making in the room. The evening meal was good and the bar had a nice atmosphere. A decent breakfast with lots of choice from full English to continental and everything in between. Would certainly stay there again.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights for the Bank holiday weekend! We found the staff very helpful and friendly. The hotel is very old and full of character! We liked the atmosphere of the hotel! Our double room was classed as an Executive room and it was indeed a very large room with 2 beds put together which were comfortable! The decor was rather dated and the bathroom was also large but the shower was very weedy without a good strong jet of water and the bath surface was wearing away! It would be a very good room if the Bespoke owners would redecorate/refurbish the room and install a powerful shower! Also the tea and coffees in the room and biscuits were a bit frugal and we had to ask for more which the staff gave us happily! Also it would be nice to have some complimentary water bottles in the room! The breakfast was very nice which we paid an additional £10 for 2 per morning(full English or Ham poached eggs and hashbrowns) The bar is also very relaxing and has comfortable sofas to relax in! Free parking at the back and the hotel supply you with a voucher, to display in the windscreen. There are alot of stairs to climb if your room is in the 400s but you do get use to the variable heights and steepness of the old stairs! It is in a good central location in the town centre right near the Castle, I can imagine a bit noisy if your room faces the front but our room was at the back so relatively quiet apart from the hum from the kitchen extracter fan chimney if the room Windows were open.Overall we enjoyed our stay and we would stay again but I think this hotel could be improved with some attention to the rooms and bathrooms. The staff are great :-)

Spent one night here, our room was at the front of the hotel and very noisy. Staff were friendly and helpful. A lot of character in the hotel but needs a lot of decorating as it looks very shabby. Good location for nightlife and shopping.

Room Tip: Avoid front of the hotel

We needed inexpensive accommodation. Down in Colchester for an appointment we arrived the night before, quite late in the evening. The parking was easy to locate despite the one way system. Upon arrival in reception we noticed the huge winding stairway. We had to ring the bell for service but didn't have to wait longer than a few minutes at the most. The staff were very polite and assistance with our bags was offered. The building dates back to at least the 14th century, and despite a lot of the furnishings looking old and worn, I personally thought it was quite magical. The bar area was abuzz, and the high ceilings and very crooked and creaky floors were quaint. It's a very large building and as we walked up the huge staircase there was an exposed area of the wall, with a plaque describing what the wall was constructed of- mud and straw, and all the walls were the same...our twin room was very basic, the ceiling was crooked, and when I walked from the side of my bed to the bathroom, it felt like I was on a roller coaster as the floor was totally not flat. It creaked with every step. The pictures on the walls were not straight either probably because the floor and ceiling were so crooked! Nevertheless, the shower had good pressure, soap, shampoo etc were supplied, and the white towels were white, the sheets crisp and clean and the bed blissfully comfortable. I made use of the coffee and shortbread biscuits. Iron, ironing board, and a trouser press were supplied. The book of places to go in and around Colchester was very well worn, and about ten years out of date, based on various laws that have changed over the years. One interesting thing of note was the toilet had a huge sign on it informing patrons that it used a shredder method for conservation methods which in all my travels I have never seen before. I would certainly stay there again, and hopefully would have more time to enjoy the hotels facilities apart from a bed and shower.

Room Tip: There was a little bit of noise from the street below, but not enough to be bothersome. I guess roo...

We stayed here for one night! Fantastic room for the money! Staff were very accommodating and the room was everything we needed! Check in was easy and the fact that you got free parking and wifi was definitely a bonus! Breakfast was on offer at £5 and was lovely! Thanks would stay again if in the area! Brilliant cannot be faulted! Thanks!

I booked the hotel though Bookings.com and left a comment informing the hotel that I would require the room from 11am, as we needed to change to attend a wedding in the afternoon. I will the hotel credit they did honour this request.
The location of the hotel is on the high street in Colchester so ideal if you want to go shopping, car park is at the back of the hotel and there was plenty of spaces., mind the one way system.

The hotel is an old building but it could do with some TLC the furniture in the bar areas is dirty and could do with a good clean or even changing, the rooms are small and very little light, my wife did struggle putting on her makeup. The bedrooms need to be redecorated, I understand the building is old but no need to keep the décor that way as well. The only meal we had was breakfast and that was really nice, staff very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: The Hotel did have Wifi but I didn't use it so don't know if it was free or not. Front of...

Unfortunately, we had a bad experience with the George and we are still trying to sort it out. During the check-in we were told our credit card was not valid and then we provided reception with another card on request (different bank account). To our surprise when we returned home, we noticed that they had charged both accounts with the total amount (double charge). We forwarded them by email proofs of payment of both accounts and all sorts of evidence and got no reply. Then, we phoned and they requested us to email it again. No reply. After another phone call (from Spain were we live) we double checked with them whether the email address was correct, however, we got failure messages since they had provided us with a wrong email address...

We have now turned to our bank and we are still trying to recover our money by other means. Despite several emails and phone calls, they have shown no will /interest whatsoever to try and sort out this issue (double charge). We still think that we should to leave this review for the record.

Thank you for your comments - however - we can confirm, once again, that your card has only been charged once for your 3 night stay.

We are sorry for any misunderstanding there may have been and we look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.
