“Might be going down hill again”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2013

In the early 00's this pub had a reputation for being a student pub - with low price Stella and loud grunge playing every night. Then, in the late 00's it cleaned up, turned the music down, increased the selection of drinks and added real ale. And was great.

Lately, however, it seems to be slipping back into its dark past. Me and my wife visited on a Wednesday night in December - we were the only customers except for a guy at the bar who knew the barman. The ale was poor (I think my pint was bad), the music too loud (playing the barman's personal selection no doubt). We had a pint and left feeling pretty dissapointed.

“Friendly service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2011

We only live a few minutes walk from The Hole in the Wall, therefore we go every couple of months or so. We always find the service very good. Even though it is on the slight Alternative Side - my husband and I are in our 50's and 60's and we do not feel out of place - and are always welcomed. We have not had a meal there - however - they do always have a good selection of ales.

Brilliant pub, great atmosphere and something of a 'local' feel, even though it is in the heart of town.

No trouble, unlike many pubs in the area, but you are warned that they like to play the music loud and heavy... it is not a pub for quietly sipping cocktails!

Landlord is very amiable, knows all the regulars well (of which there are many!!!) and keeps a good stock of beer and wine, as well as a fantastic selection of spirits.

Recommended, but bring your earplugs on a saturday is you don't like the music!
