We stayed here to travel to and from the 2014 V Festival, we booked because we wanted a family room as there were three adults and they offered a family room and the Chelmsford Travelodge was really expensive. First impressions were better than we expected however first impressions can be deceiving. There was a strange smell in the room which was located to two dirty nappies left in the bathroom bin by the last guests. There was a old hat on top of the wardrobe forgotten by a previous guest all forgivable until we turned up for breakfast on Sunday morning at 9.05 am and was locked out. The breakfast waitress Deborah shouted through the door that she was closed and had stopped serving because it was 9.15 am ? Clearly a time difference in Colchester to GMT ok we were late but maybe a the offer of a hot drink, cereal and fruit juice would have been nicer than being shouted at in front of other guests. Like naughty school children ? Our shower had two settings, scalding hot or freezing cold. The room was never cleaned during our three night stay, dirty cups, unemptied bins and the same towels for three days. Checking out on Monday we decided to skip breakfast and eat somewhere decent instead. Checking out consisted of speaking to someone on the entry phone and being asked to post the key cards through the letterbox, no how was your stay etc. We wanted to pay for the room in cash but was charged on the card it was booked with. Ok it was cheap and they didn't increase their prices for V weekend but you get what you pay for and unless you have no other options I'm sure there are much nicer places to stay in Colchester, it's a shame because it has great potential as it's a lovely old and historical building, 50 terrible ratings can't be wrong. We nicknamed it Bates Hotel and won't be returning.

Terrible place, which is such a shame is it is a beautiful old building which deserves some love and attention. Don't think the decor (or the linen) has been touched since the 80's. Upon arrival you can get into the building via a door marked Reception, but you will not be able to get into Reception as it is permanently locked. To check in you must use a phone and the people in charge will come down to you .... in their own sweet time and possibly dragging their kids with them. Very unprofessional and definitely unwelcoming. Most uncomfortable bed I have every had the misfortune to sleep in. Did eventually sleep after three or so hours of tossing and turning, trying to avoid the lumps. Pillows filthy and smelly. They were changed, but the smelly covers were put back on the clean pillows!!! Only good point was the breakfast and the lady who was serving it. She was really nice, unlike the invisible couple who seem to "run????" the place. Never been made to feel so unwelcome in my life. And don't dare to show any discontent or you will be shouted at - down the phone of course as you won't see anyone personally..... Hotel allegedly has wi-fi but all the time I was there, my i-pad read "server down" every time I tried to connect. The breakfast was beautifully cooked and nice and fresh, and served with a friendly willingness by the only lady who seems to care about anything. Don't be fooled by the name either. Yes, it is riverside, but hotel??? A hotel has services, this has none. Definitely only a b&b. Such a shame as this is a beautiful old building with a great location. It just desperately needs someone to care for it and look after it, not treat it (and the customers) with such utter contempt. You have been warned.........................!!!

I stayed at this hotel on a business trip and luckily it was all paid for by my company (I would not have been impressed if I'd paid for it myself). The room was dirty with cobwebs behind the bed, the windows are single glazed so very noisy and to top that off the window didn't close fully. The service was ok and the people who worked there were very friendly but breakfast wasn't great. I asked for a full English with no beans and I was brought one sausage and one fried egg, no bacon, no tomatoes, no toast... All of which everyone else had on their plates! The key card to get into the room only worked every now and then and the door didn't lock properly from the inside so every time someone else opened or closed their door it popped open, which wasn't ideal being a young female in a room on my own!
The pillows and duvet were smelly and the very soft mattress sunk down at the top and the bottom. The room was boiling hot so had to keep the curtains closed all week but the heating still came in every morning!!! Overall it was an ok stay as a business trip but I definately would not go back!

do not go to this hotel it is bad-we booked an overnight stay after a wedding nearby. The room stank of drains, the cold tap swung on its axis, mould in the shower and then every pillow was stained both sides with bright yellow and blood splatters on one. We called for replacements that didnt come ,upon calling again (phone porterage system) we were called Liars and that they had been changed. That was enough -got taxi -went home.To this day we have only received half our room fee back.

Room Tip: avoid is all i can say

Five of us stayed here for a girls weekend away and we were very impressed! Debs checked us in and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. I assume she is the person other reviews are referring to but our experience with her couldn't be further from those! I can see that she wouldn't take any rubbish but, this is her business so too right! The rooms are dated but are spacious, very clean & do the job nicely! Alison was a new member of staff and she served us drinks & was very pleasant indeed! From both Debs & Alison we couldn't have wished for better service! The breakfast was fabulous (all in the price!!). I told Debs that I didn't want sausages & bacon and she came out with a veggie breakfast for me! So much more than you'd get from the faceless value hotels out there! We left feeling satisfied by our stay & v full from a lovely breakfast! Thanks girls!

Ok so we booked one night as we were going out in Colchester, getting ready in the room with music on the iPad (not particularly loud) and the owner comes storming in shouting and swearing at us all and telling us to "Calm the f down" and she would "see us in the morning" and if we didn't like it to get the f out of her hotel! I wouldn't have minded if we had been warned prior to this, however we had no idea the music was even loud until she came storming in! The rooms are dirty covered in mould and cobwebs, they provided 2 hand towels for three people, the curtains were hanging off all in the "family room!" Then at 7.25 this morning she knocks on the door and wakes us up to say she's had complaints about the banging and to get out! (To which our reply was ... Well we have been asleep you just woke us up!) no apology or signs of remorse. She also let herself into our room whilst we were out as the lights in the bathroom were switched off when we came back which is NOT acceptable when all of your possessions are there. Do. Not. Stay. Here!!
