“Wonderful, warm, welcome stay.”
Reviewed 18 November 2011

We were welcomed into the charlie browns warmly by Jane, even though we arrived a couple of hours after our check in time. We were also greeted by the couples dogs, which was nice. The four poster room is beautifully decorated, matching the low ceilings and dark wooden beams, whilst still looking modern and homely. The carpet hurt my feet when I wasn't wearing shoes. And the Hot Chocolate powder drink in our room was nearly empty. They didn't provide shampoo, but managed to provide a huge range of mens moisturiser, maybe four types.

The B&B is located about a 15 minute walk from the town centre, castle and the park.

Breakfast was nice, Jane made us a full english Breakfast in the morning, which was served in the lovely breakfast room, looking outwards onto the garden.

The only complaint i would have is that the latest check-out time is 10:30am which is a bit early as we aren't exactly morning people. They didn't take cards for payment.

Room Tip: The green room looks too olive green for us.

I stayed at Charlie Browns for 3 nights last week, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and it's very rare you can say that about a hotel or B&B stay!

I stayed in the four poster room, it was fantastic, everything you could wish for or need was available. The decor is very impressive, it's the little touches which make it feel like home.

I stayed over for business, free wi-fi was very convenient. The breakfasts were first class, plenty of choice and a high quality.

If you are thinking of staying in a B&B in Colchester I would certainly recommend Charlie Brown's without a doubt!

I found Charlie Brown's through Google, and the ad stood out from the rest! We had the Mulberry room, comfortable, clean and spacious. As country dwellers from a very quiet village, we had extremely restful nights.

Jane & Jonathan are excellent hosts, and make you feel welcome and part of the family! I have mobility problems, and they were considerate, attentive and helpful - 10/10 for that! Oh, and the dogs are also very welcoming!

Top tip - parking is a bit problematical. Use your hazard warning lights as you approach from the town centre and reverse onto the drive. We found other drivers were quite happy to wait for a minute or two, and it makes driving out so much easier.

I always say that “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”; for once I was wrong!!

On arriving (I had said we would arrive before 18:00 and we arrived at 17:00; so to be fair we were a little early) at Charlie Browns there was a personal note on the door asking me to telephone a mobile number. Having telephoned this number on a number of occasions, 25 mins had passed and my party were getting frustrated that we had to wait outside. Then came Jane, struggling with her shopping, mainly because she had been carrying her mobile so as not to miss our call – unfortunately all calls had been directed to answerphone.

From that minute, all was well! We had booked 2 of the 3 rooms; we had the four poster room and the kids the room that had the bathroom across the corridor (a lovely bathroom; which is probably better than the en-suit in the four poster room).

The four poster room is lovely; plenty of space, light and had everything you could have wanted from a B&B; top marks!!! The other room was smaller, but equally as nice; would stay there again.

The breakfast was very good, cooked to order and served in the lounge (a big flat screen TV and comfortable chairs make this a cosy room).

When you read about the history of the building on their main website, it does not do it justice; wonderful oak beams, not a right angle in the building; full of character.
The only down side is its location next to a noisy road (actually surprisingly quite when inside); but this is obviously reflected in the price of the rooms £50 & £65 respectively – this represented excellent value for money.

Parking is difficult, especially if all 3 rooms had cars (not sure what would happen if guests in all 3 rooms required a car parking space); however our 2 cars fitted fine, however it is difficult backing out without someone watching for approaching traffic.

We had come for a family event, so normally we would not need to stay in a B&B in Colchester; however, if we ever need to stay in Colchester again, this would be our first choice to stay – we were made very welcome – thank you!!!!

Hard to fault this at £60 for a large and very comfortable double room with en suite shower in a medieval cottage very close to transport and the town centre. All kept spotless, nothing too much trouble, super breakfast. Jane and Jonathan are charming, helpful and efficient. Definitely go and stay there, and enjoy historic Colchester and its beautiful environs. Parking is free if space is available - check when booking.

Room Tip: Mulberry Room is large and comfortable. Tip - switch on the breaker over the door for the loo fan.

If you want an exceptional B&B experience then you can't look further than Charlie Brown's! The accommodation in this 600-700 year old building is simply stunning. Can't find enough glowing adjectives. We had the four poster room and we just gaped in delight when we entered and realised that this was going to be our home for three nights. Everything you could ask for was there - all the usuals plus a cooler and wine glasses, magazines, antique "things" which were fascinating in themselves.........spacious, airy, quiet. Wow!
Breakfasts were substantial, delicous and freshly cooked. Jane's company is a delight and I'm glad we followed her many suggestions of where to go.
Colchester just a 10 minute walk away.
Parking a bit tight but we managed.
Incredible value for the money

This is without doubt one of the best bed and breakfast I have stayed in - gorgeous and unique decor. From the moment I rang to book to when I settled up - the friendliness of Jane and Jonathan was outstanding, Nothing was too much trouble for them. Directions they gave (I was on foot from coach station) was spot on. The room is absolutely delightful with beautiful oak beams and everything you could want for a stay away - from ear plugs to hair straighteners. All the beauty products in the bathroom were of a high quality, even supplying things like cotton wool etc. Breakfast was beautful and excellently presented. Good advice given by Jane and Jonathan on where to eat - again expert advice. Can't wait to return! Excellent value for money.

Room Tip: The 4-poster bed was devine and so comfortable.
