Serene & Stunning is the only way I can describe Carlisle's Cathedral. Well worth a visit. A stonethrow from the city centre....

To visit Carlisle Cathedral is a must for anyone visiting Cumbria in general or Carlisle specifically,
In order to complete construction, stones were removed from the city's West Wall, which is still a pedestrian/vehicular thoroughfare. The Cathedral has a beautiful stained glass East Window, which must be seen from the inside to really appreciate its beauty. The roof, which is a barrel roof is one of the longest in the UK, again not to be missed. In the "choir" area, you can still the burn marks along the Canons seats from hundreds of years ago, caused when the priests of the time falling asleep whilst holding their candles. A must when visiting Carlisle.

An ancient Foundation and oozing with history and atmosphere. Great architecture - and don't miss the glorious painted ceiling in the choir, and the fabulous east window. Magical in the early morning with the sun streaming through! There's an excellent little shop and the Prior's Kitchen does a very good line in lunches and teas. Yummy cakes.

There was plenty to see and explore and a large amount of the site is undercover. The food in The Priory Fectory was excellent and I would certainly recommend Carlisle Cathedral as a visitor attraction for adults and children alike.
