The castle is not as spectacular as many other castles in England, Scotland and Wales. Nevertheless, you should visit it if you are in Carlisle. The staff is friendly and tries to "recruit" you as a member of English Heritage.

While not as impressive as other UK castles (Stirling & Edinburgh) visited during our 5 week trip thru the UK, Carlisle Castle ranks in my top 5. Just less than half of the castle is open to the public. The rest is occupied by members of a British military unit. The large area of green grass surrounding the castle and the red colored stone of the castle is a nice contrast to the clear blue sky or the days of gray/white clouds in this northwest portion of England. There is a great deal of history associated with the castle. The displays are few and this allows for an open feel and ease of visiting the castles buildings and rooms. The Border Regimental Museum is housed in one of the buildings. If you enjoy viewing military memorabilia this is the place for you. The museum is packed full of items from medieval to 20th century. The museum is crowded and an expansion project is ongoing. The walkways atop the exterior walls are easy to walk and provide nice views of Carlisle.

Visited this castle on a cold and rainy day in November. Castle is much smaller than others in England. Exhibitions are pretty simple and not very detailed.

Feels abit overpriced at 5.7 pounds per pax for a 30 minute visit.

Thank mongogo
