“Can not wait to go back there.”

One word "AMAZING"..
If you go to Carlisle do not miss out on the castle.
It is steeped in history, which includes a lot regarding Richard 111 which was in fact why we visited it.
The staff in the shop there were so friendly, and went out of their way explaining everything before going in where you could just wonder around at your own leisure soaking up the atmosphere..
The Grand Hall is outstanding.

“Time well spent, great for kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2014

We stayed for a week in the Carlisle area and the castle was one of our first stops. The best parking is the pay-and-display lot by the train line on Devonshire Way, but you can only get to it from the eastbound lanes of Castle Way (A595). If you're going westbound, you must advance to the next roundabout to return eastbound and get to the castle parking.

Our kids enjoyed the scavenger-hunt type activity provided by the staff at the start of our visit and kept their interest up throughout our stay. Castle staff were very friendly and helpful in orienting us and pointing out some of the highlights prior to our walk around the grounds. In total, we spent a couple of hours exploring the buildings and site.

This was our first English Heritage stop on our trip, so we bought the 9-day Overseas Visitor Pass for the family, which made this visit and other stops we made around the country to be quite affordable.

“WELL WORTH THE VISIT”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

Formally the home of the Border Regiment the castle is over 900 years old having been built during the reign of William II of England. Visitors will be interested to note that Carlisle was considered to be part of Scotland around the time the castle was built, but was claimed for England by William II who drove the Scots out. He believed there was a need for a castle to ensure the northern border was secured from any invasion from Scotland. The castle is also famous for keeping Mary Queen of Scots prisoner for a number of months.

“Nice Castle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

We had done a loop around northern England and part of Scotland and we ended up going to 8 different castles, Carlisle ranking 7 of 8. Bamburgh Castle I would vote as the best seen. There wasn't anything in particular that made it bad, it was interesting to look around and gave good photo opportunity. I just like most of the others visited better. Do leave enough time to look around and take your camera!

This was my list if interested:
8. Barnard Castle
7. Carlisle Castle
6. Alnwick Castle
5. Doune Castle
4. Lindisfarne Castle
3. Edinburgh Castle
2. Stirling Castle
1. Bamburgh Castle
