A nice dramatic looking castle, which makes for a good walk. Information about the castle history was interesting but not incredibly exciting. I didn't think price was all that extreme to be honest but still if you are visiting a lot of castles then these prices start adding up for not much benefit when you can read the history online and look at the castle from the outside.

I was a bit sceptical about visiting the castle but soon overcame this and really enjoyed it. Spent a lot longer than I expected to. Brought the additional guide book which helped but had a good time 'exploring' the site. Well worth a visit!!!

We visited this castle(the most besieged in England)and still felt the rather sinister reputation in this foreboding fortress. The furnishings were sparse but the rooms retained atmosphere. The dungeons and "licking stones",the state apartments and the walls evoke the castles grim past.We were lucky that"King John"was in attendance and gave a great 30 minute auto biography.

As one of the other reviewers commented the castle itself is well kept but sparse. On the other hand it is very conveniently situated, built as it was in the middle of a particularly attractive small city and next to a handy car park.

What made our visit was the performance of King John and his valet. They stayed in character all through their show. We felt like we got a real insight into the man himself.

When I had a particularly tricky question of the valet (about the murder of John's nephew), he insisted we move to a quieter space away from the king, so we couldn't be overheard. It made the trip worthwhile.

I think they've got Richard the Third coming soon but unfortunately we are away.

So well done actors you changed the average to the very good and memorable!

You could spend a few hours walking round the castle, but there is not really anything to see. Unfortunately the museum/exhibition room, was not ready for viewing which may of helped the £5.50 worth the visit.
