I stayed in the County Hotel on a Friday evening and requested a room away from the front street to try and cut down on the noise from nearby bars.

Unfortunately this made little difference and the music from the street was still very loud and went on in what seemed like increasing volume until after 3am.

I'd avoid this hotel at all costs unless you intend to indulge in Carlisle nightlife until chucking out time.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

I stayed here for one night while away on business and was given a single room directly above a night club. The music was so loud that the room shook and I was unable to gain any sleep, and I was sadly unable to change rooms at that late hour. The room and bathroom were basic and required updating. I booked this hotel given its proximity to the train station, but that seemed to be the only positive thing this hotel could offer.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room that is not above a night club.

Stayed as part of a large group, and we were not disappointed. Our room 114 was very spacious and nice and clean, beds were comfy and plenty of little extras, biscuits, toiletries, tissues etc.
Food was varied, hot and tasty, plenty of choice and great menu.
Staff were very helpful and pleasent, our only request for a new plug for the bath, was dealt with promptly. This hotel is situated in the centre of Carlisle , within walking distance of station, shops etc. there was a little outside noise at night from surrounding bars, but nothing to bad.
Would we stay again?, you bet we would, and hopefully quite soon!

Room Tip: Room114 is above the front entrance on the first floor

My initial impression of this hotel in reception was positive(clean, tidy and pleasant staff). However once you venture beyond the ground floor you get an entirely different impression. The carpets from the first floor and beyond are not only filthy but worn and full of holes making them incredibly dangerous, Its hard to understand why staff members or the manager have not identified this as a potential trip hazard and taken preventative steps.
The room itself (314) was an absolute disgrace; dirty tea cups and spoons, scum filled kettle,a TV that didn't work, a bathroom door that didn't close properly, toothpaste smears on the bathroom mirror and sink. The rest of the bathroom I can only describe as rancid, I had a stand up wash as the shower was so disgusting. Also air locks in the pipes, so taking 15seconds for water to come through ( I timed it !!!)
On top of all this the room carpet had over a dozen stains, some as big as a 30cm which looked suspiciously like vomit, curry and urine stains, absolutely disgusting ! Needless to say I couldn't even walk around the room with my shoes off.
I filled in the feedback sheet and also informed staff, who sadly seemed rather indifferent to it all, i can only assume they have heard it all before.

Stayed at the County for three nights in a family room. A few seconds walk from the station it's ideally suited for city sight seeing. The room had a double bed and a set of bunkbeds and plenty of space if you really did have a family with you. Negatives: the bathroom while spacious, was a bit unkempt with peeling grubbly lino round the edges. The shower was hanging off the wall and so scaled up it was almost impossible to shower. The tv was tiny, high and only had 4 channels (not that I really cared about that as I was busy most evenings but might have on another occason). The secondary glazing was a bit stuck so it was hard to get the windows open. View over the carpark. Curtains could have done with being re-hung. Positives: Location. I told the housekeeper about the shower and it was entirely replaced by that lunchtime. Breakfast was fantastic- you could have had full english, cereal, continental, the works. All of them! Self service. Hilarious evening entertainment (the hotel caters for coach parties), plus an amazing 19th century glazed tile ceiling in the bar, indicating the former glory that the building must have had. The best thing though, was that despite the faded grandeur, the staff were so wonderfully friendly that you just didn't care. A really lovely team. At £70 for a room that technically could sleep 4, I'd say was it reasonable over all.

Room Tip: I'd heard from another guest that it was very noisy at the front.
