Good points
Close to the station, interesting building
Bad points
incredibly hot in summer, especially the corridors, breakfast for non-coach parties is a bit like visiting a Little Chef, not very clean.
Some rooms are OK, some less so, it is a bit of a lucky dip.

I wanted a cheap base in Carlisle to stay before and after the Wall race 70 mile run- I can't fault the price, as it was certainly cheap!
The noise wasn't too bad for me, as I was at the back overlooking a courtyard, and I had no problem with the staff- who were all polite and helpful. Also the location was great, for travelling by train. My room was clean and was cleaned every day so no issues there.
The building is very dated, and could certainly do with some investment, to bring it up to scratch.
However the worst for me, was the lack of ventilation- it was a warm midsummer weekend, but the hotel was stifling- ruined my sleep- a sash window that was painted open at 6 inches allowed no fresh air in- it's an old building and obviously retains heat- may be nice in winter!
So even though I knew what I was getting from previous reviews and a cheap price, I would have to say I wouldn't return.

the staff are lovely but deserve a pay rise and a weekly health screening for their own safety. Surprised this place hasn't been shut down yet for the numerous health and safety violations !!! Do mind the ragged torn carpet on the stairs. The room with glory holes and no locks. The double beds with serious holes in the mattress. The unmade bed. The wrong size and dirty valance. The curtains with only two hooks holding them up. OMG the list goes on. Proper manky !!!

This is a stunning building and the price is great for a central location...and there the good points end.

As others have pointed out there is so much noise that sleep over the weekend has so far been rarer than rocking horse s**t.
Our room seems to be right above a party that is going on right now as I wrote this at 23:51 normally I would shut the windows but as also pointed out by others this place is roasting.
I've always had a habit of opening drawers to find the Gideon bible so was somewhat surprised to open a drawer to find condoms in it not a great start, opening the cupboard found litter and while moving a curtain an empty beer bottle fell out from I don't know where so I don't know what they pay the cleaners but it's too much...also one of the towels had a mysterious brown stain on it...The kettle gave me a small electric shock when I saw it was flickering on and off while trying to make a brew.

The place is cheap and for a good reason...will I stay again, no I saw a guy sleeping in the street who looked like he got a better nights sleep than I did.
If you're looking this place up move on and pay the extra for somewhere better.

The County Hotel - first impressions. Good parking, great central location in the centre of Carlisle, on a busy main road. However, after 7pm? they close the road and it becomes a pedestrian route. Great I thought! Ah ... bars, clubs, stag and hen do's, and thumping base music ..... so hot in the bedroom that I had to have the window open .... and then finally when all the drunks have gone home they bring out the cleaning equipment. Huge lorries up and down, bin men, etc, etc.

The hotel itself is tired. A former great elegant hotel run down and neglected. Its a listed building and deserves better. My single room was clean, had everything I needed in it, soft, clean towels, etc. Free WiFi was an added bonus. Receptionist (man) friendly and helpful.

Would I stay again? Not with a front facing room, NO! For just one night and passing through ... perhaps but far better places around I think. Cheap and noisy I think I'd say!

Room Tip: Ask for a rear facing room over the car park. Might not look too attractive but you've come for...

Don't stay here. Have stayed in many hotels in Carlisle and this is the worst by far. Dirty sock on the floor and tags from clothing so not cleaned properly. Windows need sorting as do floorboards and bathroom pipes (exposed). Bathroom tiles dirty and walls behind headboard covered in dust. Radio in background during breakfast is horrible and the hotel is swarming with people with mental health issues. Obviously semi permanent residents. 3 star? On another planet. This has obviously been a stunning hotel in the past but stay elsewhere. Have paid the same price or less and been far better served.

Room Tip: Given them more than one chance. None.
