“Comfortable stay”
Reviewed 13 August 2014 via mobile

Just got back from an over night stay at the Hallmark Hotel. We picked this hotel mainly because of the closeness to the railway station, it was literally 20 steps away. After a lovely welcome from Samantha at the reception desk, we went up to our room on the second floor, the room was a good size, nice decor, and very comfortable, the only negative for me was the fact we were unable to open the windows, the room was a bit too warm for my liking. The breakfast was plentiful, cereals, fresh fruit, croissants, different fruit juices and everything you could ask for on a full English breakfast, though this could have been a bit hotter. Overall our stay was very enjoyable and we would definitely return.

Apologies about the window and breakfast I will have these issues looked into immediately as they are not acceptable.

Stayed hear a few times and find it central and staff and hotel is perfect for my needs, would recommend it to any one for a short break, only down fall is that you have to leave the hotel to fine leisure facilities

Room Tip: dont be afraid to ask for what you need

Thank you for your review I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us, and nice to hear that you do stay on a regular basis. I too wish we had space for Leisure but unfortunately the hotel has no extra grounds for this to happen.
Look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Kind regards

Apart from the staff being courteous and helpful and breakfast being okay I cannot say anything else good about this hotel.

On first impression, the rooms were okay and pretty standard albeit a bit pokey, the bathroom needed updating and good use of mould remover wouldn't be amiss. The hotel is situated right next door to the train station so it is very noisy when the window is open. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning and no fan provided so without the window open the heat in the room is unbearable (we booked to stay at the end of July), not a problem in our children's room though because the window in the bathroom would not close. The walls are so thin, not only could we hear the girl in the room next door speaking on her phone, but we could also hear the person she was talking to (at 1am).

However the worst thing about this hotel was the quality of the mattress. Every spring could be felt, it sagged without anyone sitting on it and my husband ended up sleeping on the floor just to try and get some sleep before our long drive the following day. This is a four star hotel, the least we expected was a decent bed.

On check out the receptionist didn't bother to ask us if we'd had a nice stay - I guess from the suitcases under our eyes as well as on the floor she knew it wasn't worth it.

We stayed for two nights a Friday and Saturday. We had room 104 which was looking onto a pub garden. Music played loudly for the two nights and even though there is secondary double glazing the noise could still be heard and interrupted my sleep. The hotel room was clean and tidy but the ensuite shower had not been part of their refurb and had black in the grouting and around the shower tray. We would stay again though but would ask for a quieter room. The breakfast was great and the staff were friendly and helped us when asked.

Room Tip: Avoid room 104 and adjacent rooms on that corridor

2 nights ago we stayed at Hallmark Hotel, Carlisle. We got married on Saturday (staying at the venue Saturday night) so this was the first night of our honeymoon. We paid for an executive room so that it would be the best. However I am so disappointed with the hotel!

First of all when we checked in they would have booked us in a standard room until I said we were in an executive room. We told them it was our honeymoon yet they then put us in a twin room!!

The bed was one of the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on, my back and my neck are still agony! There was no air conditioning, one of the panes of glass in the window had a massive hole in it covered with plastic, another pane of glass was cracked. There was mould all over the bottom of the window. The trim for the shower screen was just propped against the shower, the shower itself was Lukewarm and the pressure was poor. Even the furniture was damaged appearing that it had been ripped apart. To top all of this off the staff set off the fire alarm in our room when we were 10 minutes late checking out.

We complained to the reception manager (Keely) who denied the fire alarm stating there were signs out saying they were testing it (funnily enough the alarms were not going off in the corridor and there were no signs about!)

The maintenance man said he knew nothing about the repairs, however if this is the case I'd like to know who put the plastic on the broken pain in the first place?! we were basically told there was nothing they could do as we'd booked through hotels.com (who have been excellent and offered a full refund). I am so very angry and upset by all of this and feel like the start of my honeymoon has been ruined!!

What an awful place. I'd give it 0 stars if i could. We stayed in room 212.

Room Tip: Stay anywhere but here

The overnight stay was purchased as a birthday present on a voucher by my son. We decided on Carlisle because we didn't want to travel too far and had only passed through or by before. Good location. The Cathedral was well worth a look, went round the Castle, good shopping area, quaint cafe's and plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from. Glad we went. The hotel is next to the Railway Station so easy for train travellers also had a small but tight free car park for hotel patrons which was necessary. The inside was very nice and the staff very polite and helpful. No complaints re the food we had either. The room was obviously a basic room on the top floor but very nicely decorated, clean with a comfortable bed etc. However the aspect from the room was of a small internal courtyard for ventilation ducts and machinery. In other words not very nice but Ok we could live with that as we were out and about and closed the curtains at night. That was when the problems started. The 'air conditioning units' made a fluctuating racket all night making it very difficult to sleep. Should have complained but we were both shattered and we both thought the other was somehow managing to sleep through the noise. At about 11.30pm (we had just dropped off) when we were subjected to about 20mins of the glass empties being put in the bins (very noisy). Got the impression because we were on a voucher we were shoved to a back didn't matter room. All this noise spoilt what was a nice visit. Our fault should have complained but were too tired. In the morning the receptionist although sympathetic couldn't do much. Both so tired we came straight home instead of meandering back through the lakes and going for a walk that had been the original intention. Don't stay in room 326.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 326 unless you have very good ear plugs

We arrived at this Hotel to be told we could not have the room we booked and paid for 9 months previously. We booked twin beds and were told they did not have any. The room we were given had a double beed with a mattress which was like sleeping in a hammock. No Fan or Air conditioning (It was 29C) and the windows kept falling down when opened. Could hear people in room next door, also our room was next door to railway station. Four star eating NOT correct. On top of all this we were told we could not eat in the Dining Room as a Coach of Asian tourists had arrived and it was booked for them. Also the photo of the Hallmark Hotel is NOT correct. It looks as if you are staying in a fort which is not so. The Fort style building is across the road from the hotel and has nothing to do with it.

Room Tip: My tip is,,,,,,,Give this Hotel a miss..OR certainly Room 213!!!

Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you were disappointed with your stay that is not what we like to hear from our guests. The points that you have raised will be fully investigated and the appropriate steps taken to rectify them.
I am unsure as to why you were not allocated the correct room this will be looked into, in terms of the room allocated I have looked at the mattress already and found it to be in full functional order, obviously people get used to certain mattress and sometimes can be uncomfortable away from home. Regarding the heat in the room, we do not have air conditioning as you say but we do not advertise this either. We are looking into this but being a Victorian listed building these things are not straight forward.
The Brasserie was indeed busy that night with a large party and the time you wished to eat was indeed full, there were other time slots available throughout the night for you to choose from. The picture on the web site is one of many, the shot that you are referring to is one taking from the hotel, the site also has a full front view of the hotel for people to see to avoid any confusion.
Once again my apologies that you did not enjoy your stay and as I said before the points will be investigated and rectified.

Yours sincerley
