“Fantastic discovery - will be back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2014

Went here by chance on recommendation from local business. What a find. Beautiful and interesting museum - great fun for a 9 year old learning about the Ronan invasion of Britain as very interactive. Lots to see and do, cafe, gallery and shop included. Only drawback was having to pay for entry but ticket is valid for a year and children are free. Will certainly be back and would recommend.

“Varied and stimulating local museum with global relevance.”

Extremely well presented exhibits and information. Fascinating range of topics. Carlisle has long been a 'border city' and I particularly liked the way Tullie House illustrates the 'borders' theme in broader contexts, with examples from around the world and throughout history.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the admission ticket now allows return visits for a year.
Good for all ages.
Helpful and friendly staff.

“If you're local, it's a handy time-filler ...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

We have two small children and live within the county. The fact that buying a ticket allows unlimited re-entry over a year makes it much more attractive to locals than perhaps irregular visitors. Since buying our entry tickets we've probably returned 4 or 5 times. The kids do enjoy the museum, but they are at that age where sitting in the train seats and dashing in and out of the badger sett is classed as entertainment. As an adult, it does get a bit repetitive.

The café is OK - we've not had food, but the coffee is alright. The play area for children at the back of the café quite often looks like it's been thrown up into the air and landed badly. There are lots of bits. That said, there's enough to keep the kids quiet for as long as it takes us to finish our coffee.

It's a shame there isn't any seating in the courtyard area outside. When we last visited we had brought a packed lunch and popped out of the museum for a while to eat it ... there wasn't really anywhere on site where you could comfortably perch.

The exhibits are generally good. It is all quite static ... there's not a lot of change between visits, but there are times when there are staff about to talk about specific pieces and allowing hands on contact with exhibits, which is good.

Overall, it gets a thumbs up from us on the basis that the kids enjoy it and it's a pleasant way to spend an odd hour or so when we are in Carlisle.
