We stayed for our last night after walking Hadrian's wall. The flats had 7 single rooms and were clean and warm. The kitchen facilities were great and the space meant that we could all squeeze around and eat together (16 of us)
My only gripe would be the shower, there was a separate loo, separate shower and a bathroom with a bath and loo. Whilst I was having a shower one of the others in my party ran a bath and the shower went off (totally) leaving me covered in shampoo and freezing and unable to do anything about it. If you're aware of the situation it's not an issue (just time having a wash better) but after a 19 mile walk it really wasn't what I needed.
The strange undersheet/top sheet/pillow combo is something that everyone needs to experience at least once in their life too!
Might be worth taking earplugs as although you're in a single room, the noise from the flat travels a lot.
I'd definitely visit again, and think it would be a good base for exploring the area.

The location is about 15 minutes walk from Carlisle train station, the main bus station, and Tesco, and just across the bridge from Carlisle Castle, so it is quite easy to find.

As mentioned by the other reviewers, this is a seasonal hostel that is a student dorm during the school year. I was pleasantly surprised to be assigned a room to myself, and there was a sink en-suite. Bathrooms were reasonably clean, and although there were only two toilets on the floor, it wasn't very busy the night I stayed there.

There are several wi-fi access points spread throughout the facility, but it requires an access code that is very fickle and often didn't let me through. The staff really didn't know how to deal with it either, but aside from that they were very helpful.

Even though this carries the YHA label, it is actually independently managed and the membership discount does not apply here.

The youth hostel is a student hall of residence used as a youth hostel in the summer. As such you get individual rooms, which is a real bonus, and a kitchen shared between 6 people. Shower facilities are similarly shared. The staff are very helpful and informative, and the cycle storage is very good.
One down side is that it is all self-catering, breakfasts etc. are not available. Also, it lacks some of the usual hostel facilities such as a drying room.

My brother and I stayed the first two nights of a walk along Hadrian's Wall. We had two single rooms in a unit of six singles, sharing with 3 German walkers. The accommodation was what you would expect. The real benefit was not having to share a room, which is something that proved fairly disastrous during our stay at Once Brewed- you never know who you will end up with.
On the whole I enjoyed the stay in Carlisle and in this hostel. The staff were polite, attentive and helpful. The facilities were adequate.

We had a good value stay here in Carlisle on our Hadrian's wall trip. The rooms are student accommodation so we had a room each with a single bed in each. We were so exhausted we could have slept anywhere so it would have been silly to spend money on anything else! The two showers are shared between 7 rooms and were clean and not too busy. The rooms are a bit tired looking but adequate. The location is good for the castle and museum. The lady on reception was very helpful and there is towel hire too.

This is a seasonal hostel, it is actually the student residence hall at the university. Nothing fancy, but you do get your own room which was nice for drying out all my camping gear after doing Hadrian's Wall Path. Laundry facilities available. Internet was one very old shared terminal with dismally slow speed, would have thought a campus would have had something better. Wifi was supposed to be available but there was only one person that could set it up for your laptop and she wasn't there during the 2 days I was. Short walk to city center. Lots of hikers and cyclists were staying here.
