“Not the cleanest”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2013

The guest house is located a short walk from the town centre and easy to find, reasonably priced but in my opinion there are a few things that need to improve to make you want to return next time youre in Carlisle..Kate herself is pleasant enough, but the rooms were not cleaned on a daily basis, bins not emptied, toilet rolls not replaced and carpets not vacuumed..The breakfast room has a bad smell of dog about it,(seems the dogs sleep in there or the adjoining kitchen) which is a little off putting first thing in the morning..during one afternoon the dogs had been left in the back yard outside from my room window, and there was non stop barking for a good hour..the TV ddnt pick up all the standard channels, and the shower was not functioning properly...also the shower head holder is not compatible with the shower head, and on a few occasions fell out of the holder, banging my head on its way to the floor....with a little more attention to basic details, in particular the room cleanliness and the dog smell, the guest house could improve a lot

I am surprised and sorry that one of my guests was not entirely happy with his stay and am shocked at the review, especially as I feel it was to a great extent undeserved.

In reply, I will try to deal with the issues chronologically.
This guest was asked on the Wednesday, along with his companion, (for the third time during that week), not to smoke in the guest house, This customer;s travelling companion admitted to smoking, I explained that I frequently have police officers stay due to the close proximity to the police station and that he could get fined and that I could get a fine for allowing him to smoke, I also explained that it makes the room smell for weeks afterwards and other guests who do not smoke refuse to sleep in the room. he said that he wouldn't do it again. I thanked him and left,
The next day when I was cleaning the room, this guest complained that he was unable to find any channels on the new 32" TV... I explained that I had tuned it, (I thought successfully) according to the instructions, but we discovered the channels had not stored to the usual 1,2,3, etc. I didn't know how to fix it but offered to get someone to tune it properly later that night at 6 p.m. but he said 'not to bother' as he had found something he wanted to watch and didn't want to be disturbed later, he added that had been unable to get any hot water the day previously, even though his travelling companion said that he had had no problem... I have a combi boiler and couldn't understand why... so I called a service engineer, when he came next day, I put my two Labrador dogs outside in the yard... and yes they were barking, I apologise if this disturbed this guest. The engineer said he could find no problem with the boiler or the supply meter, then I went to clean the bedrooms to find it occupied, when I asked if I should come back later I was told by this guests travelling companion " not to worry' ( I believe this guest was in the shower at the time as the bathroom door was closed and I could hear the shower running), I asked if he wanted any top ups of tea or coffee or any toiletries, to be told 'no we haven't used any thanks'. The next day I again couldn't clean the room as this guests travelling companion was asleep when I tried to clean the room and although I came back later, when I heard him moving around, he told me not to bother again as he was going to get ready.so thinking that the best policy was to retreat ,I left it.
I am sorry that this guest was not happy with the way I cleaned the room, however I feel he was harsh in his criticism, as I was not allowed access to clean it properly, perhaps he was unaware of his travelling companions instructions.

The guest spoke in his review of a "bad smell of dog" in the breakfast room/lounge on the Sunday morning...yes I admit I had taken the dogs swimming the previous day and 'soggie doggie' in the heatwave of this Summer is not a good smell, ( they do not sleep in this room or the kitchen but in an adjacent utility room) I am perhaps a little oblivious to the smell of dog after many years of owning dogs, I have asked several guests since reading the review if they thought that the smell was strong...and they said no, one even said he wouldn't have known I had dogs if he hadn't seen me walking them, so I suppose that this was the odd exception..my apologies if this was off putting at breakfast, I will certainly take more care in future when the dogs are wet, perhaps shampooing them and drying them off.

With regard to the shower head falling out of the holder mentioned in the review, I was unaware of this problem but on examination found that it was loose and it did indeed jump out, when the hot water was turned off sharply, due to the water pressure of the power shower, I apologise for this and I appreciate this guest bringing this to my attention, I have immediately replaced it with a different kind of shower head and bracket so that this does not happen again.

In conclusion...I have replaced the shower head and re-tuned the TV, I was unaware of these issues during the room check prior to this guests check-in, but have now addressed these issues.

I cannot apologise enough that this guest was unhappy with the cleaning of the room, had he brought it to my attention at the time I would have ensured that the room was cleaned, I will endeavour to be more attentive to the cleaning regime in future, perhaps being more proactive, I could try 'do not disturb/service the room' signs for guests use to avoid any miss-understandings or embarrassing interruptions,

I will endeavour to take more care when the dogs are wet, to avoid any 'bad dog' smells.

Many thanks... Kate.
